Question 1 of 15
1. The guys who did this sing were real cool cats:

"Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree
With a joy that's hard to hide,
And sometimes it seems that
All I have to do is worry,
And then you're bound to see my other side."

Now, ask yourself, would I deliberately lead off the right track?
Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. All right now, folks, you won't find this song with the classics, but it definitely has a shocking chorus.

Let all be forgiven; let none be denied."
Hint

Question 3 of 15

4. At points, this song smacks of Bob Dylan, but who is it really?

6. Well, if you need help on this one, just stop now. (Although a clue does appear elsewhere in the quiz.)
Now, that was just evil of me.... but really, you should know it.

"I wish I was like you:
Easily amused.
Find my nest of salt;
Everything's my fault."
Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. Gotta love the coast:

"I've got a smile on my face, and I've got four walls around me.
I've got the sun in the sky, all the water surround me.
Oh you know, yeah, I've been down and sometimes I'll lose,
I've been battered, but I'll never bruise... It's not so bad."
Hint

Question 8 of 15
8. One thing I do know: "this ain't no holiday".

"Well, sit right down my wicked son,
And let me tell you a story,
About the boy who fell from glory
And how he was a wicked son."
Hint

Question 9 of 15
9. Whether or not (heh, weather, get it?) you get this one is probably an indication of your feelings about Classic Rock.

"Someone told me long ago
'There's a calm before the storm.'
I know!
It's been comin' for sometime.
When it's over, so they say,
It'll rain on a sunny day.
I know!
Shining down like water!"

I'll be with you darling soon,
I'll be with you when the stars start falling..."
Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. Here, I'll give you this one: it always makes me think of Johnny Cash.

"People cry and people moan;
Look for a dry place to call their home;
Try to find some place to rest their bones,
While the angels and the devils
Try to make 'em their own."
Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. "In your life, you get so high
There's nowhere left to go but down.
Don't believe that no one cares

Do your time

By color & size.

That everything's fine.
Since you ran away, you've been beating
Your habits to death."
Hint

Is it a song about drugs?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The guys who did this sing were real cool cats: "Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree With a joy that's hard to hide, And sometimes it seems that All I have to do is worry, And then you're bound to see my other side." Now, ask yourself, would I deliberately lead off the right track?

Answer: The Animals, "Don't Let me Be Misunderstood"

What actually got me liking this song was Santa Esmerelda's re-mix on the "Kill Bill, Vol. 1" sound-track.
Otherwise, I must admit I'm lacking in true appreciation for The Animals.
2. All right now, folks, you won't find this song with the classics, but it definitely has a shocking chorus. "One night as you sleep in your goose feather bed, We will be kneeling at your bedside. We'll pray for your soul like the good Lord said: Let all be forgiven; let none be denied."

Answer: Steeleye Span, "You Will Burn"

Steeleye Span is a great modern folk music band, who have been around for over three decades!
"You Will Burn" in particular is about the Salem witch-hunts.
3. Oh, brother! This band was so prodigious, they now have a sub-genre named after them. "I like the stars in the sky, And watch the moonlight go by. I've got a lot of friends."

Answer: Chemical Brothers, "Asleep From Day"

The Chemical Brothers are an absolutely amazing break-beat electronica group. They were the creators of the Chemical Beat.
4. At points, this song smacks of Bob Dylan, but who is it really? "I found myself on the road to confusion; A dull mind and a weak constitution. I gave a ride to a medicine man; He had a glass eye and white light in his hand."

Answer: Sam Roberts, "Higher Learning"

Sam Roberts, from Montreal, originally sang only in French.
5. Oh, dear, for this one i apologize. But he IS my Idol. "I used to have the longing to hear What was in your heart, But now it seems I'm over the fear Of this falling apart."

Answer: Clay Aiken, "No More Sad Songs"

Hey, I said I was eclectic!
Clay Aiken was runner-up American Idol 2. and "No More Sad Songs" appeared on his debut album, "The Measure of a Man".
6. Well, if you need help on this one, just stop now. (Although a clue does appear elsewhere in the quiz.) Now, that was just evil of me.... but really, you should know it. "I wish I was like you: Easily amused. Find my nest of salt; Everything's my fault."

Answer: Nirvana, "All Apologies"

Nirvana, nirvana, nirvana.
Kurt Cobain, you are still sorely missed.

P.S. The "clue" appears int he previous question. And more apologies, for having associated Nirvana with Clay Aiken.
7. Gotta love the coast: "I've got a smile on my face, and I've got four walls around me. I've got the sun in the sky, all the water surround me. Oh you know, yeah, I've been down and sometimes I'll lose, I've been battered, but I'll never bruise... It's not so bad."

Answer: Great Big Sea, "Ordinary Day"

Great Big Sea got their start with classic East Coast ditties, but the group members have all since written a number of original "east coast rock" songs, great to listen to when you're feeling down.
8. One thing I do know: "this ain't no holiday". "Well, sit right down my wicked son, And let me tell you a story, About the boy who fell from glory And how he was a wicked son."

Answer: The Pixies, "Holiday Song"

The Pixies music is generally described as indie-grunge, and their sound is wonderfully unique.
("This ain't no holiday" is another line from the song.)
9. Whether or not (heh, weather, get it?) you get this one is probably an indication of your feelings about Classic Rock. "Someone told me long ago 'There's a calm before the storm.' I know! It's been comin' for sometime. When it's over, so they say, It'll rain on a sunny day. I know! Shining down like water!"

Answer: CCR, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"

Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) is a great example of classic rock.
And, by the by, my capitalization of Classic Rock in the question was meant as an incredibly subtle hint. (They're so much easier to see when you know the answer, ain't they?)
10. Who knows how evil i can be? Hopefully, you do. "It's getting near dawn, When lights close their tired eyes. I'll soon be with you my love, To give you my dawn surprise. I'll be with you darling soon, I'll be with you when the stars start falling..."

Answer: Cream, "Sunshine of Your Love"

Cream, sometimes referred to as "Eric Clapton's band" was right there at the beginnings of what became rock and roll. Their music, therefore, has a wonderful bluesy feel.
11. Here, I'll give you this one: it always makes me think of Johnny Cash. "People cry and people moan; Look for a dry place to call their home; Try to find some place to rest their bones, While the angels and the devils Try to make 'em their own."

Answer: Meat Puppets, "Lake of Fire"

I learned about the Meat Puppets because Nirvana actually covered a couple of their songs (Lake of Fire being one of those.) The opposite is also true.
Oh, and it makes me think of Johnny Cash because of the title, "Lake of Fire", similar to his "Ring of Fire".
12. "In your life, you get so high There's nowhere left to go but down. Don't believe that no one cares 'Cause we're here waiting for you, baby. Do your time And then come home for good." Is it who you think, or is it the other man?

Answer: Sloan, "Everything You've Done Wrong"

I feel an especial need to include Sloan in this quiz, because Jay Ferguson (guitar) went to my high school.
Anyway, Sloan is part of the growing number of great Canadian rock bands.
13. And a detour into the highly depressing side of music. "Take all your pills and divide them By color & size. Take all your problems and advise them That everything's fine. Since you ran away, you've been beating Your habits to death."

Answer: Our Lady Peace, "Consequence of Laughing"

Our Lady Peace: again, Canadian. This alternative rock band has been around for over a decade.
14. "She loves you,..."? No, not this time. "Thirty notes in the mailbox will tell you that I'm coming home, and I think I'm gonna stick around for a while so you're not alone."

Answer: White Stripes, "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground"

The White Stripes, yet another rock band, have only been around for a couple of years, but they'll definitely be around for a while.

And hopefully some of you have gotten that the next part of the "She loves you..." quotation is "yeah, yeah, yeah." (The Beatles.)
15. "I've got the understanding of a 4-year-old. I've got the piece of mind of a killer soul. I've got the rationale of a New York cop. I've got the patience of a chopping block, yeah." Is it a song about drugs?

Answer: Crystal Method, "Trip Like I Do"

Crystal Method, my chosen representative of Canadian electronica.
And, yeah, the "drugs" (as in crystal meth) clue was lame.
