Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When John Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman, what book was Chapman holding and reading from when the police arrived?

Answer: The Catcher In The Rye

"In His Own Write" (1964) by John Lennon, consists of short stories and line drawings, often surreal and always nonsensical. It is notable in that it was the first solo Beatle project in any form. "A Spaniard In The Works" (1965) was John's follow-up the next year, and it consists of nonsensical stories and drawings similar to the style of his previous book.

The name refers to a pun on the term "A spanner in the works" (analogous to the American English expression, "throw a monkey wrench" [into someone's plans], a spanner being British English for wrench), another example of Lennon's humor. "A Cellarful Of Noise" (1964) was Brian Epstein's autobiography.
2. What did the original Manfred Mann's Earth Band LP "The Good Earth" contain when buyers looked inside?

Answer: A deed to one square foot of property.

Early owners of one copy of this album were entitled to rights over one square foot of the earth situated in the County of Brecon, Wales in Great Britain. The inner sleeve included a coupon that had to be sent in for registration. There was no swindle and thousands of fans were registered.
3. In the early 80s The Cars had their own recording studio built in Boston- what was its name?

Answer: Synchro Sound

Located in Boston, The Cars recorded most of their 80s material here. Abbey Road is where groups like The Beatles and countless others recorded in Britain. Sun Studios, opened in Memphis by Sam Phillips in 1950, was where artists like Elvis, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis waxed gold. Kling Klang Studios, originally located in Dusseldorf, Germany, is the the private recording studio for electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk.
4. Who conceived the record jacket for The Rolling Stones LP "Sticky Fingers"?

Answer: Andy Warhol

While Andy came up with the idea, Billy Name did the photography, and Craig Braun designed it. Contrary to popular belief, it is not Mick Jagger's crotch that is shown. Roger is a painter and also stage set designer, mostly known for his LP covers for artists such as Yes and Asia. Hipgnosis was a British art design company that consisted primarily of Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey Powell, and later, Peter Christopherson in the 70s and early 80s.

They designed countless LP covers, among the most famous being Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon." Peter Max is a noted Jewish-American artist who came to prominence with the psychedelic movement of the late 60s.
5. In the 1950s, Jerry Lee Lewis caused a furor when he married his cousin- how old was she?

Answer: 13

Myra Gale Brown, born in 1944, was the daughter of Jerry Lee's first cousin, J.W. Brown, who also played bass in his backing band. When the news came out that the 22 year old singer/pianist had married her in December 1957, it subsequently destroyed his rock 'n' roll career, but years later he did find an audience for his country material.
6. After Ritchie Blackmore had sacked Ian Gillan from Deep Purple in 1973, Paul Rodgers, of Free and Bad Company fame, was approached to join the group as lead singer.

Answer: True

After both Gillan and Roger Glover had been sacked, bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes was hired first and they had considered continuing on as a 4-piece group, but the idea of a band with two singers appealed to them. Paul Rodgers did turn them down as he had just started Bad Company with Simon Kirke, who had also played with him in Free. David Coverdale, who was virtually unknown at the time, filled the lead singer slot.
7. British vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bernard Sumner is mostly associated with the band New Order, but has also played in quite a few other groups. Which one of the following has he NOT played with?

Answer: The Glove

The Glove was an 80s side project of The Cure's Robert Smith and Souixsie and The Banshee's bassist Steve Severin. Joy Division was the band that Bernard started with Ian Curtis, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris that morphed into New Order after Curtis hung himself. Electronic was Bernard's side project with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Bad Lieutenant is Bernard's current band with former bandmate Stephen Morris playing drums.
8. Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band has had quite an assortment of players come and go through the various line ups over the past 20+ years. Who has NOT been in his backing band?

Answer: Gary Moore

Gary Moore, a noted British blues guitarist/singer who passed away in 2010, was best known in the U.S. as having played twice with Thin Lizzy. Sheila E. has drummed for Ringo at least a couple of times as has sax player/multi-instrumentalist Mark Rivera. Mark Farner, formerly of Grand Funk, was part of the All Starr Band in 1995.
9. Probot was conceived by Dave Grohl as a metal project whereby he would write all the music, play all the instruments, but have his favorite vocalists sing on different tracks. Who did NOT participate on this CD?

Answer: Robert Plant

Motorhead's Lemmy played bass and wrote the lyrics for "Shake Your Blood". Sepultura's and Soulfly's singer/rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, born in Italy and raised in Brazil, sings lead on "Red War". Cronos, AKA Conrad Thomas Lant and the lead singer of British band Venom, takes the vocal spotlight on "Centuries Of Sin."
10. This one is about my favorite blues guitarist- since 1949 blues great B.B. King has named all of his guitars and bequeathed the same name to each one. What is it?

Answer: Lucille

The name "Lucille" comes from a gig B.B. was playing in Arkansas in 1949. Two men started fighting and knocked over a barrel of kerosene which was burning to keep patrons warm. Stupidly, B.B. went back in to retrieve a 30 dollar guitar. Later on he found out the two men had been fighting over a woman named Lucille.

He named his guitar "Lucille", and each one thereafter, as a reminder to never fight over women or to go running back into a burning building to get something you forgot.
11. Marshall amplifiers, produced by Marshall Amplification in Britain, are used by guitarists the world over, but its company founder, Jim Marshall, interestingly enough, is not a guitarist. What instrument does he play?

Answer: Drums

Born in Acton, West London in 1923, Jim Marshall was a performing drummer who also supplemented his income with lessons-an early pupil was Mitch Mitchell from The Jimi Hendrix Experience. He started his company in 1962 after many customers to his music store (Pete Townshend, Ritchie Blackmore, etc.) spoke of a need for better amplifiers. He teamed up with a young electronics wiz named Dudley Craven and began producing prototype amplifiers, leading to the formation of his company.
12. The Doors went out on the road and played live in the 70s after Jim Morrison died.

Answer: True

Without Jim, they released "Other Voices" (1971) and "Full Circle" (1972) with Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger sharing the lead vocals. Both releases saw them tour behind it, typically with a bass player and a rhythm guitarist to accompany them. Their 1972 tour basically stuck to their post-Jim material with "Light My Fire" as the encore.
13. In 1982, Joan Jett released "I Love Rock And Roll" which climbed the Billboard charts and spent seven weeks at number one. Which group wrote and recorded it first?

Answer: Arrows

Written by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker, it was originally released in 1975 but was not a hit due to the lack of promotion from their record company.
14. Who is known as "America's Oldest Teenager"?

Answer: Dick Clark

Dick Clark, best known as the host and producer of "American Bandstand", earned his moniker from his youthful looks he had for years. Don Cornelius was the host and producer for his show, "Soul Train". Alan Freed, best known as an American DJ, had a short-lived American Bandstand-type show called "The Big Beat". Britain's Jimmy Savile, a DJ, actor, and media personality, hosted the first and last episodes of England's long-running music show, "Top Of The Pops".
15. Ska was a precursor of reggae music.

Answer: True

Ska developed in the late 1950s in Jamaica, which itself evolved from Mento, a style of Jamaican folk music. Ska music was later slowed down, where it was then referred to as Rocksteady music. This lasted until 1968, when the tempo was then sped up, and with different effects added, reggae was born.

The Beatles "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (1968), was an early example of musicians outside of Jamaica using the reggae rhythm.
