Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The album "Abraxas" is one of my all-time favourites; it contains a brilliant version of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman" and is packed with great Latin based tunes including "Samba Pa Ti". Who made this fantastic 1970 album?

Answer: Santana

An album way ahead of its time, "Abraxas" reached number seven in the UK album charts and clocked up 52 weeks in total on the chart.
Manuel and The Music of The Mountains had a number three hit single in 1976 with an interpretation of Rodrigo's "Guitar Concerto".
2. The Byrds loved to cover Bob Dylan numbers; which of these is the correct title?

Answer: Mr. Tambourine Man

The Byrds' version of Dylans' "Tambourine Man" reached number one in the UK in 1965.
"Guitar Man" was a hit for Elvis Presley in 1968.
"Mr Blobby" was an awful so-called comedy character from TV show, "Noel's House Party", man how we laughed.
Mr Rusty has apparently retired from "The Magic Roundabout" and now lives in the English midlands.
3. Tom Jones scored a 'sixties hit with which of the following songs?

Answer: What's New Pussycat?

"What's New Pussycat?" was Tom's fourth UK hit single. It reached number eleven in 1965.
Tom Jones has had top-ten singles chart in five different decades.
4. Which of these non-English titled singles failed to make the UK top-twenty? (In case you're struggling with this I've kindly added the dates.)

Answer: "Cymru am Byth" by Henry Tudor (1485)

"Gaudete" (number fourteen) was sung in Latin, "Ca Plane Pour Moi" (number eight) was entirely in French and "Sukiyaki"(number six) was sung in Japanese.
Welshman Henry Tudor's song, "Cymru am Byth" (Wales for ever) about his famous victory at Bosworth was never released as a single, however I'm sure it would have done better than Richard III's derisory rap effort, "My Horse, My Horse"!
5. Fleetwood Mac's first UK number one single was an instrumental named after which seabird?

Answer: Albatross

"Albatross" first charted in 1968 when it hit top spot. It was re-issued five years later and almost returned to the top but peaked at number two.
6. PJ Harvey scored a hit with which of these number songs?

Answer: 50 Ft Queenie

"50 Ft Queenie" was a number 27 hit for PJ Harvey in 1993.
"2000 Miles was a number fifteen hit for The Pretenders in 1980.
"Eight Miles High" was a hit for The Byrds in 1966, it reached number 24.
"One Inch Rock" was a number 28 hit for Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1968.
7. They say 'diamonds are a girl's best friend' but only three of these songs charted in the UK; can you sort out the 'miss' from the three hits?

Answer: "Rushden and Diamonds" by Kriv's Challenge

Shirley Bassey sang the theme tune to the James Bond Movie, "Diamonds Are Forever", the song peaked at number 38 in 1972.
The title track of David Bowie's 1974 album "Diamond Dogs" got to number 21.
"Diamonds and Pearls" was a number 25 hit for Prince and his team in 1991.
Kriv's Challenge have yet to score a hit but please keep on trying boys.
8. Thin Lizzy first charted in Britain in 1973 with a version of which Irish folk song?

Answer: Whiskey in the Jar

"Whiskey in the Jar" first charted in 1973 when it got to number six.
I saw Thin Lizzy just as they were starting to make it big, just a brilliant night. Phil Lynott's death in 1986 was such a terrible waste.
9. Rod Stewart scored a massive number one on both sides of the Atlantic with which song?

Answer: Maggie May

"Maggie May" was a massive number one hit on both sides of the pond for Rod Stewart in 1972. It was taken from the album "Every Picture Tells a Story" which also went to the top of the charts.
10. Dave Grohl's band, The Foo Fighters had a big success using which tool in 1997?

Answer: Monkey Wrench

"Monkey Wrench" reached number twelve in the UK charts.
"Monkey Spanner" was a number seven hit for Dave and Ansil Collins in 1971.
"Funky Gibbon" was a number four success for The Goodies in 1975.
11. The Electric Light Orchestra had a hit with which of these 'western' sounding titles?

Answer: Wild West Hero

"Wild West Hero" was a number six hit for Jeff Lynne and the lads back in 1978. Jeff's home town of Birmingham doesn't get namechecked too many times in hit single lyrics but Jeff went one better than that; he slipped in 'Shard End' into "All Over the World" the area of Brum where he (and I) grew up.
12. "Crazy Horses" was a UK number two hit for which of these acts?

Answer: The Osmonds

"Crazy Horses" was the first UK top-ten for the toothpaste-sponsored youngsters, sadly it wasn't their last.
The Jackson Five were The Osmond's big rivals; the main difference was TJF had some talent.
kd Lang is a great Canadian singer.
mnbates is not a horse but he is crazy enough to ask me to co-compile a quiz about horses with him. Check it out when you've done here; I think you'll find mine are the sensible questions!
13. At the risk of upsetting some people I have to say I'm not a fan of Guns and Roses; great music that's for sure but Axl's voice is not for me. However I do really like this hit song; can you spot the correct title?

Answer: November Rain

OK, my head's on the block; GnR's version of Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door" would always be in my top-ten of records I hate and "Child of Mine" is just annoying. Rather strange then that I like "November Rain" but more for Slash's work than Axl's strangulations; for the record it went to number four in 1992.
14. The first act to have an a capella number one in the UK was The Flying Pickets with "Only you" in 1984. Can you remember which of these was the second?

Answer: "Caravan of Love" by The Housemartins

The Housemartins put down their instruments for this a capella version of the Isley Jasper Isley classic. Paul Heaton (of The Housemartins) explains, "A capella is a musical form using only voices which began in the small northern town of Hull." I think he was joking but they're a strange lot in Hull: ask them to direct you to a local beauty spot like Spurn Head and they don't even know where it is! That right queenie?
The much missed Richard Whiteley avuncular host of TV show "Countdown" was made honorary Mayor of Wetwang, a small village near Hull.
15. I really like the tongue-in-cheek songs that Neil Hannon produces for his band, The Divine Comedy. Which of these classic authors wrote the "The Divine Comedy"?

Answer: Dante

One of The Divine Comedy's most popular songs is "National Express"; a sideways look at one of Britain's best known long-distance coach companies.
I wonder what Dante Alighieri would make of lyrics like these:

"Mini-skirts were in style,
When she'd danced down the aisle,
Back in '63;
But now it's hard to get by,
When your a__ is the size
Of a small country!"

He'd probably give a wry smile but I think he'd be happier exploring the themes of manifest destiny and eternal damnation in something like say, "Hotel California". Yes, I'm pretty sure Dante would be a big fan of The Eagles.
