Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On top of the UK chart this week were The Rolling Stones, who, as I write this quiz, are about to headline at Glastonbury, 50 years after their first release. This was their fourth single to make the UK Top 40, and their first number one. It contains the lines: "She spent all my money, playing her high class game". Name the song.

Answer: It's All Over Now

Still rocking after all these years, the Stones have had eight chart-topping singles in the UK, and seven in the USA. They have had less chart success with singles in recent years, but remain one of the best live acts in the world.
2. At number two was a Geordie band, the Animals, with a record that topped the charts both sides of the Atlantic. The record was their version of an old American folk song about life in New Orleans. What was it called?

Answer: The House Of The Rising Sun

The original Animals had several hits but within a couple of years bad management ensured that the band was in disarray and they broke up. The lead singer, Eric Burdon, formed a new band, Eric Burdon and The Animals, with a new heavier blues sound, and they moved to San Francisco in 1966. The following year they had their biggest hit in this incarnation with "San Franciscan Nights".
3. At number three were The Beatles, with their fifth UK chart-topper. It contained the lyrics "So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone". Name the song.

Answer: A Hard Day's Night

This was a great song but for me the best version of it charted the following year when Peter Sellers recited the lyrics in the style of Laurence Olivier in the role of Shakespeare's Richard III - hilarious!
4. At number four, maintaining a diminishing American presence in the UK top ten, was Jim Reeves, who was to die in a plane crash only two weeks after this chart was published. This was his biggest hit in the UK so far, peaking at number three, though he went on to have a posthumous number one in 1966. What was the song?

Answer: I Won't Forget You

Jim Reeves was piloting a single-engined Beechcraft from Arkansas to Nashville, with his manager and pianist Dean Manuel the only passenger. They encountered severe weather and the plane crashed, killing them both, near Brentwood, Tennessee.
5. At number five with "Hold Me" was an artist remembered more for the fact that he split his trousers on stage than for his musical prowess. Who was he?

Answer: P J Proby

It was at the Fairfield Hall in Croydon in February 1965 that the notorious trouser-splitting incident occurred. It led to Proby being banned from performing in a large theatre chain and on the two main UK TV channels, and probably prematurely ended his career.
6. At number six was "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", sung by one of the UK's best ever female singers. She started her career in a folk trio with her brother Tom, but went on to have numerous single hits. Who was she?

Answer: Dusty Springfield

Considered by many of her colleagues to be the best white female singer of her generation, Dusty sadly died in 1999 and in that same year was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006 (only its third year in existence). Just before she died she was also honoured as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and, uniquely, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave permission for the honour to be presented to her earlier than the ceremony was scheduled for, and for it to be presented to her in her hospital bed instead of at one of the royal palaces where the ceremonies are usually held.
7. The other American act in the UK top ten this week was Roy Orbison, with the second of three records he topped the UK charts with. It contains the lyrics "It breaks your heart in two, to know she's been untrue". Name the song.

Answer: It's Over

The Big "O" was huge in the UK in the early 60s, and in 1963 he had headlined a tour featuring an upcoming young band called The Beatles. He and George Harrison formed a lasting friendship which helped to nurture the birth of The Traveling Wilburys in years to come.
8. At number eight were The Swinging Blue Jeans with their third and last UK Top Twenty Hit. It had been a minor hit in the USA for Betty Everett the previous year, and would be a US number one for Linda Ronstadt in 1975. Name the song.

Answer: You're No Good

The Swinging Blue Jeans were one of the leading Merseybeat bands in the early 60s, regularly appearing at The Mardi Gras and The Cavern, but they failed to adapt to changing styles and soon became much less of a force.
9. At number nine was Cliff Richard with his 25th UK Top Ten hit from the soundtrack of his film "Wonderful Life". What was the song?

Answer: On The Beach

Trying to find information on the internet about the film "Wonderful Life" is a real challenge! Unless you add the year or Cliff's name to your search criteria you always get "It's A Wonderful Life", and I just can't see Jimmy Stewart as Cliff Richard!
10. At number ten with "Someone, Someone" was a group enjoying their fourth and last UK Top Ten hit in this incarnation, although the backing band was to go on and have seven more hits in their own right in the second half of the decade. What was the name of the act?

Answer: Brian Poole and the Tremeloes

Brian Poole left the band in the mid-sixties to go solo (unsuccessfully) and must have been hugely frustrated to see the Tremeloes do so well without him.
