Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the top of the chart were the Beatles, with a song which contains the line "Nothing you can sing that can't be sung". Name the song.

Answer: All You Need Is Love

"All You Need Is Love" was first heard on the first ever global television link, "Our World", on 25th June 1967, seen by 400 million people in 26 countries.
2. At Number Two in the UK chart were The Monkees with a song that was originally called "Randy Scouse Git". It was felt by RCA that this title would not go down well in the UK, so it was released under what title?

Answer: Alternate Title

"Randy Scouse Git" was an expression often used by Alf Garnett in "Till Death Do Us Part" when talking about his son-in-law Mike (played by Anthony Booth, father-in-law of one of UK's slipperiest and dodgiest prime ministers, Tony Blair).
3. At Number Three was Vikki Carr with a song written by Gilbert Becaud and Maurice Vidalin and entitled in French "Seul Sur Son Etoile". Under what English title was it released?

Answer: It Must Be Him

"It Must Be Him" was also covered by Shirley Bassey and Dottie West.
4. At Number Four was one of the most evocative songs of the year "A Whiter Shade of Pale". For which band was it a huge hit?

Answer: Procol Harum

This is one of the few singles to have sold more than ten million copies worldwide. It was one of the anthems of the Summer of Love.
5. At Number Five was Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco ( - - - - - - - - )". What eight words are missing from the brackets?

Answer: Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair

Other San Francisco-related UK hits in this summer of love were "Let's Go To San Francisco" by the Flower Pot Men, and "San Franciscan Nights" by Eric Burdon and the Animals. NB - Scott sang "Be sure to wear SOME flowers in your hair", but the word "some" does not appear in the title.
6. At Number Six was "There Goes My Everything" by a singer who took his name from a 19th century German classical composer. Who was the singer?

Answer: Engelbert Humperdinck

Engelbert Humperdinck, at the age of 76 years, represented UK in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest with "Love Will Set You Free", but achieved only an ignominious 25th place out of 26!
7. At Number Seven was a band enjoying its second UK Top Ten hit with "She'd Rather Be With Me". Who were they?

Answer: The Turtles

The Turtles' biggest hit was "Happy Together" which had topped the US Billboard charts earlier in the year.
8. At Number Eight was "See Emily Play", the first top ten hit from a band which were to go on to become mega-stars. Who were they?

Answer: Pink Floyd

"See Emily Play" was Pink Floyd's second single success in the 60s - they had reached 20 with "Arnold Layne" earlier in the year. Known more as album artists, it was another 12 years before they bothered the UK singles charts, although this time they topped them with "Another Brick In The Wall"!
9. At Number Nine was a song from a 1967 London West End hit musical, sung by its star, Topol. What was the song?

Answer: If I Were A Rich Man

Topol played the part of Tevye in the first London production and then went on to star in the film version in 1971.
10. At Number Ten was a band called The Young Idea singing a song written by Lennon and McCartney for the "Sergeant Pepper" album. What was the song?

Answer: With A Little Help From My Friends

A much bigger hit with this song came from Joe Cocker 15 months later - he topped the UK charts with it.
