Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In June 2005, Meg & Jack White released "Get Behind Me Satan." Unlike past efforts, the album prominently features the piano, but don't get me wrong, the self-proclaimed "New Carpenters" can still rock. Can you name the band?

Answer: The White Stripes

"My Doorbell" is a catchy little tune and is played on FM stations. Jack White collaborated with Loretta Lynn to produce 2004's wonderful "Van Lear Rose." It's a must listen.
2. Remember the band 'Til Tuesday and their radio friendly "Voices Carry?" Well this former lead-singer has done well for herself during her solo career. She's featured throughout the "Magnolia" soundtrack and has colloborated with Elvis Costello. Her 2005 release is entitled "The Forgotten Arm" and it's dandy. Can you name her?

Answer: Aimee Mann

"The Forgotten Arm" is a concept album about a boxer returning from Vietnam. The CD inserts are very elaborate and the songs are consistent and work well together. Aimee is married to Michael Penn (yes, Sean's brother) and he is a wonderful performer as well. You can sometimes catch Aimee as an unannounced guest at the Largo in Los Angeles.
3. From hip-hop to folk rock, and alt-rocker to moon dancer, Beck can do it all. His 2005 release doesn't disappoint and is classic Beck. Name the album from this "white boy."

Answer: Guero

Beck joined forces with the Dust Brothers on "Guero" and produced an amazing album. Beck's mother hung with the Warhol crowd and his grandfather is an acomplished artist.
4. Combine a bit of country-rock, some Neil Young, a cup or two of early-70's Rolling Stones; mix well with fun and a punk attitude and you've got, "Cold Roses," Ryan Adam's 2005 double-disc release. Ryan has had a number of backing bands, can you name the band for this album?

Nebraska native, Conor Oberst, released his first album at the age of 14 while in the band Commander Venus. Because of his detailed images and reliance on acoustic guitar he's sometimes referred to as the indie Bob Dylan.
6. You may have to look around, down and under to find The Lucksmith's "Warmer Corners," but it is well worth the effort. Wistful and poppy, The Lucksmiths will always leave you smiling. The Lucksmiths are from Australia.

Answer: True

Tali, Marty and Mark hail from Melbourne. They were school mates and eventually bonded as a result of their fondness for The Smiths. They've released eight albums and are one of Australia's hidden treasures.
7. The Flaming Lips perform alternative swing. That's at least what I hear when I listen to the February 2005 masterpiece from Andrew Bird. Can you name this album? (Hint: The name of the album has something to do with the artist's name.)

Answer: Andrew Bird and The Mysterious Productions Of Eggs

Andrew is a violinist by trade and has played with the Squirrel Nut Zippers. "Andrew Bird & The Mysterious Productions Of Eggs" is the most ambitious, creative and quirky albums I've heard in a long time. It's wonderful Sunday morning music.
8. "The Alternative To Love" is the 2005 effort from this Detroit native. He's often compared to Matthew Sweet and much of his first two albums was co-written with Jason Falkner. Name the performer.

Answer: Brendan Benson

Brendan also works with fellow Detroit native, Jack White. The name of their colloborative effort is The Raconteurs.

The Eels' 2005 release is a 33 song, double-disc masterpiece. It's sometimes sad, often sweet, but always good. If you haven't heard the Eels, you may remember "Me Beloved Monster" from Shrek.
10. If you're a fan of Lo-Fi and the acoustic singer/songwriter thing, you'll probably enjoy "Transistor Radio." This performer's music has been described as "American Country-Folk." I'm not exactly sure what that it is, but when you hear his music, you know what it is. Can you name him?

Answer: M. Ward

M. Ward spent six years in the band Rodriguez. This is his third solo album. I expect more good things from Mr. Ward.
