Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 15 year old country singer crossed over to have a number one hit in 1960 with "I'm Sorry" Who was she?

Answer: Brenda Lee

Brenda Lee was a country singer who popped onto the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts in 1960 with "I'm Sorry" and went to the top of the charts and spent three weeks in the top spot. The song spurred some controversy in that some executives in the record company she worked for were hesitant to release a song with lyrics about love and heartache from a 15 year old girl. Eventually the song was released and is now considered her signature hit.

The song was not accepted in country music circles at first but over time, it has become part of the fabric of country music of that time period.
2. Ernie K-Doe sang about a family member of his in 1961. Which one?

Answer: Mother-In-Law

"Mother-In-Law" went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in spring 1961 for a one week stay. The song went to number one on the R & B charts as well. Ernie K-Doe was a rhythm and blues singer from New Orleans, who had limited success after this song. K-Doe became a radio personality in New Orleans in the 1980s and continued to perform occasionally until his death in 2001.
3. "Soldier Boy" was a number one hit for the Shirelles in 1962. Which of these statements about The Shirelles is TRUE?

Answer: They were the first "girl group" to have a number one Billboard hit.

The Shirelles were already a very successful group when "Soldier Boy" went to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1962, and remained there for three weeks. They had become the first girl group to have a number one hit on the charts when "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" reached the top spot in 1961. "Soldier Boy" was their 2nd number one hit.

Other top 10 songs included "Dedicated to the One I Love" "Mama Said" and "Baby It's You". The girls were not married to soldiers and Diana Ross was never a member of the group.
4. In the lyrics to this 1963 Jimmy Soul hit, what kind of girl should you marry?

Answer: ugly

"If You Wanna Be Happy" was a number one song from Jimmy Soul which spent two weeks at the top of the charts in the spring of 1963. Soul was a young gospel music singer who met up with Frank Guida, a producer who discovered Gary U.S. Bonds. Soul took this song, which Bonds did not want to record, and went to the top of the charts.

The lyrics in the refrain say, "If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife, go for my personal point of view, get an UGLY girl to marry you". Soul never had another major hit, and gave up recording.

He died of a heart attack in 1988.
5. Peter and Gordon took this song that another famous group threw away and made the top of the charts in 1964. What song?

Answer: A World Without Love

The duo recorded all of these songs but was "A World Without Love" written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon that propelled Peter and Gordon to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in 1964 for a one week stay as well as number one in the U.K. According to an excerpt from author Barry Miles work "Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now" published in 1997, McCartney didn't think the song was good enough for the Beatles.

In a rare lapse of judgment, the group declined to record the song, and first offered it to another British singer, Billy J. Kramer, who also declined the song.

It then fell to Peter and Gordon. Jane Asher, Peter's sister was, at the time, dating Paul McCartney so the duo was given the song, and turned it into a gold record.
6. The British Invasion was responsible for this next number one hit which came about in 1965. Who gave us "I'm Telling You Now"?

Answer: Freddie and the Dreamers

Freddie and The Dreamers, led by the energetic Freddie Garrity, hit the U.S. with the rest of the U.K. contingent during the British Invasion of 1964 and 1965. All the bands listed were part of that era of music in the U.S. "I'm Telling You Now" was released in the U.K in 1963, where it went to number two but didn't make it to the U.S. shores until 1965 when it went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in April.
7. The Young Rascals went to number one with their first release, "Good Lovin'"

Answer: False

Actually it was their second release. They had gotten onto the Billboard Hot 100 late in 1965 with "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore". "Good Lovin" was their second release in early 1966 and it shot to the top of the charts spending a week at number one and went to the top of the Canadian charts as well.

It was actually a cover of the same tune which was originally recorded a by The Olympics in 1965 who only had a minor hit with the tune. The group was still called the "Young Rascals" at that time. Later in their careers they would drop the 'Young' part. "Good Lovin" is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 325.
8. One afternoon, possibly a Sunday in 1967, The Young Rascals woke up and found themselves at the top of the charts again. Which of these songs was it that time?

Answer: Groovin'

"Groovin'" was a 1967 number one charting hit in the U.S. for the Young Rascals, their second in as many years spending a total of four weeks there in the spring that year in two separate stints. It actually was supplanted by another song for a couple of weeks and then regained the top spot again, a feat rarely accomplished in Billboard history.

It also went to number one in Canada, and was the only one of the group's hits to find a measure of success in the U.K., peaking there at number eight. Written by band members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Bragati the song had such wide appeal that it went to number three on the Billboard Black Songs chart.

It is considered one of their signature tunes.
9. Primarily known as a trumpet player, Herb Alpert sang lead vocals on this number one hit from 1968. Name it.

Answer: This Guy's In Love With You

Alpert led The Tijuana Brass during the 1960s and had a number of instrumental hits such as "The Lonely Bull", "Zorba The Greek" and "A Taste of Honey". On "This Guy's In Love With You", Alpert traded his trumpet for a microphone and took the song all the way to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for a four week stay in the summer of 1968.

The song was written by the immortal team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. In a side note, Alpert would again reached the top of the charts in 1979 with "Rise", making him the only artist to have a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts as both a vocalist and instrumental performer.
10. What was unusual about Zager and Evans and their mega successful "In the Year 2525"?

Answer: They never had another charting single

The official title "In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)" shot the Nebraska duo Zager and Evans to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for a six week stay in the summer of 1969. The song itself was recorded in 1967 and only played locally until 1969 when the song was picked up nationally.

The lyrics deal with a dire prediction of how the world will progress through the decades due to man's inability to cope with his own creations and inventions which gradually take away his individuality and ultimately his mentality itself with 2525, 3535, etc. being mentioned up until "it been 10,000 years, man has cried a million tears" as the lyrics go. Zager and Evans did try a follow up called "Mr. Turnkey", but this song failed to chart, making them one of the few acts in history to have a number one hit and then never chart again.
