Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although they came from New York, which geographically-named band had US Number Five hit with "Still the One" in 1976?

Answer: Orleans

Guitarist John Hall formed Orleans in 1972 in Woodstock, New York. After rounding out the band with four other members the group began playing the college circuit and club scenes. They were signed by Asylum Records and released "Let There Be Music" in 1975.

They followed up with the Top Ten hit, "Dance With Me", and began touring with Melissa Manchester. The following year John Hall left the band to pursue a solo career on the heels of their subsequent hit, "Still the One". The band released "Love Takes Time" without Hall in 1979 but disbanded shortly after the success of the Number 11 release.

They reformed a few years later and continued to perform. In 2006 Hall was elected to the US House of Representatives but he occasionally reunited with the band for significant appearances.
2. "One of These Nights" by the Eagles topped the US charts in 1975?

Answer: True

On August 2, 1975, "One of These Nights" topped the US charts for one week. The song was written by Glen Frey and Don Henley and was the first singles released from their album of the same name. The group had entered the top slot for the first time earlier the same year with "Best of My Love".
Their "One of These nights" album also yielded two other hits for the band; "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take it to the Limit".
Bernie Leadon was not enamored by the guitar driven direction of the band and favored their original bluegrass influenced style. He was also beginning to tire from their relentless schedule. In 1975 Bernie left the band to form his own project. Joe Walsh was recruited to replace him. In 1977 "The New Kid in Town" became the first Number One by the Eagles to feature Walsh.
3. "One Bad Apple" was a US Number One hit for which family group in 1971?

Answer: The Osmonds

Songwriter George Jackson had the Jackson Five in mind when he composed "One Bad Apple". The Jacksons considered doing the song but recorded "ABC" instead. The Osmonds took "One Bad Apple" to the top spot for five weeks in the US. Jackson also composed their follow-up Top Twenty hit, "Double Lovin'".
In the late fifties some of the Osmond brothers began performing Barbershop Quartet music to raise money to buy hearing aids for George Osmond, Jr. and Tom Osmond. They landed an audition on "The Lawrence Welk Show". Although they were turned down they began performing at Disneyland where Andy Williams' dad saw them and the group ended up becoming regulars on Andy's show.
"Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat," was a 1973 hit from the The DeFranco Family. "Never Can Say Goodbye" was a 1971 Number Two for the Jackson Five. "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" stalled at Number Two for the Cowsills in 1967.
4. Who had a Top Ten hit in the US in 1980 with "One in a Million You"?

Answer: Larry Graham

He was credited with being one of the innovators of the slap technique of bass playing. He left Sly and the Family Stone in 1972 to form Graham Central Station and released five solo albums in the eighties. "One in a Million You" was his best selling single and was from his 1980 album of the same name.
In the nineties he recorded an album under the banner of Graham Central Station titled "GCS 2000" as a collaborative effort with Prince and also played bass for Prince on tour.
"Steal Away" was a 1980 hit for Robbie Dupree. Benny Mardones released "Into The Night" in 1980. "Give Me The Night" was charted the same year by George Benson.

In 1987 his duet with Aretha Franklin titled "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" went to Number One and he followed with solo efforts beginning in 1987 with "Faith".

In 1992 he repeated his US duet success by taking "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" with Elton John to Number One. The song was his last US Number One, but he continued his chart-topping success in the UK. Phil Collins topped the charts in 1985 with "One More Night". "He's So Fine" became the subject of a plagiarizing suit against George Harrison after he recorded "My Sweet Lord".

The Chiffons recorded a version of "My Sweet Lord" in 1975. "Don't Say Nothin' Bad (About My Baby)" reached Number Three in the US for the Cookies in 1963.

The Ronettes charted several early sixties hits such as "Be My Baby" and "Baby I Love You". Phil Spector produced the Ronettes and also the Crystals, who had success with songs such as "He's A Rebel", "Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)" and "Then He Kissed Me".

The 1970 "Naturally" album also contained the hit single "Liar" and the Number One hit, "Joy to the World". The album reached the Billboard Number 14 slot in 1971. "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" was a Number 15 song by The Honey Cone in 1972. "One Hell of a Woman" was a Number 11 1974 Mac Davis single.

The following year they repeated the feat with "Exposed to Love". In 1987 they broke into the Pop charts with "Come Go With Me" and continued to release successful singles.
