Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is a band who have made it on to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's '500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll'. Which band's name was inspired by a book by Irvine Welsh?

Answer: My Chemical Romance

'Ecstasy: Three Tales of a Chemical Romance' is a collection of novellas which bassist Mikey Way spotted while working in a book shop before the band formed. My Chemical Romance was created in response to 9/11, when singer Gerard Way felt he needed to do something good in the world. They released their first album in 2002. It contains the song 'Skylines and Turnstiles', which sums up their motivation perfectly: 'And after seeing what we saw, can we still reclaim our innocence? And if the world needs something better, let's give them one more reason now.'

'Danger Days' is an album, 'Helena' is a song, and 'Trainspotting' is a novel by Irvine Welsh.
2. Green Day's roots go back to 1986, but it was four years before they released their first studio album. What was it called?

Answer: 39/Smooth

'39/Smooth' was originally released on black vinyl, and then on green vinyl. These green vinyls are quite rare - only around 800 were made. They have been sold for over $200 on Ebay.
3. Which band recorded the albums 'For Those Who Have Heart', 'What Separates Me From You', and 'Common Courtesy'?

Answer: A Day to Remember

The music A Day to Remember creates is a blend of pop punk and metalcore; they mix bouncy melodies with screaming vocals. One of the best examples of this is their cover of 'Since U Been Gone'. In an interview, singer Jerry McKinnon said that the band couldn't decide whether to be a pop punk band or a hardcore band, so they did both!
4. Rise Against are an openly political band. They have written songs about refugees, war veterans, and victims of LGBT bullying. Which of these is NOT one of their albums?

Answer: London Calling

'Endgame' contains a song called 'Make It Stop (September's Children)'. It is about the harassment young LGBT people face and is part of the It Gets Better Project. During the song, some of the names and ages of the September 2010 suicides are read out, the youngest being just 13.

'London Calling' is an album and a song by The Clash.
5. Which one of these bands is a blend of punk and folk music?

Answer: Flogging Molly

Fronted by Dublin-born singer Dave King, Flogging Molly often write songs about Ireland and its history ('Tobacco Island', for example). Their lyrics also cover topics such as love ('If I Ever Leave This World Alive'), politics ('Screaming at the Wailing Wall'), and poverty ('The Power's Out'). 'If I Ever Leave This World Alive' was used on the soundtrack to the film 'P.S. I Love You', which is where I first heard and loved them!
6. Underoath have sometimes been labelled a religious band, and sometimes just a band with religious members. Which of these songs is theirs?

Answer: Too Bright to See, Too Loud to Hear

'Too Bright to See, Too Loud to Hear' is about living as a Christian, particularly in the context of being in the band. Although some of their songs have religious themes, members Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie have both said that Underoath is not a Christian band, but a secular band with religious members. They disbanded in 2013, but reformed in 2015.
7. Which band, formed in 2005, created concept albums based on the fictional disappearance of Adalia?

Answer: Madina Lake

Madina Lake have three studio albums and two EPs that tell the story of Adalia, a young woman who has disappeared from the small 1950s town she lives in. Some of the lyrics and the album art provide clues to Adalia's story so that fans can try to work out what happened to her.
8. Which of these is NOT a song by Alesana?

Answer: I Don't Care

'I Don't Care' is a single from Fall Out Boy's 2008 album, 'Folie à Deux'. The other three options are Alesana songs from different albums. Their first two albums - 'On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax' and ' Where Myth Fades to Legend' - are partly influenced by myths, legends, and fairy tales.

For 'The Emptiness' and 'A Place Where the Sun is Silent', the band wrote their own stories, which are included in the lyric booklets of the two concept albums. 'The Emptiness' is inspired by Edgar Allen Poe, and is about a man who thinks his lover has been murdered. 'A Place Where the Sun is Silent' was influenced by Dante's 'Inferno'.
9. AFI's musical style has changed a lot since their beginnings in 1991. Which of these lines is NOT an AFI lyric?

Answer: When I was a young boy my father took me into the city to see a marching band.

'Hey Miss Murder, can I make beauty stay if I take my life?' is from 'Miss Murder', the first single to be released on 'Decemberunderground' (2006). 'Your sins into me, oh, my beautiful one,' is the beginning of the chorus in 'Silver and Cold' from the album 'Sing the Sorrow' (2003). 'I wanna get a mohawk but Mom won't let me get one,' is from their first album, 'Answer That and Stay Fashionable' (1995) and it is very, very different!

In the beginning, AFI were a hardcore punk band, but their style has mellowed over time. Davey Havok's vocals have noticeably changed as well. Havok has said in interviews that he no longer enjoys screaming in songs.
10. Which artist recorded the songs 'Roses for the Dead', 'Into Oblivion (Reunion)', and 'Front Row Seats to the End of the World'?

Answer: Funeral for a Friend

Funeral for a Friend were a Welsh band from 2001 until they disbanded in 2016. At the time of their break-up, they had seven studio albums and seven EPs. They wrote songs about various topics and themes. 'Tales Don't Tell Themselves' is a concept album about the captain of a boat that is shipwrecked, leaving behind his wife and daughter. The video for 'Walk Away' dramatizes this story.
