Oldies 1150, Big 500 Countdown Part 2 Quiz

Every year my local oldies radio station (CKOC in Hamilton, Ontario) compiles a countdown of the top 500 oldies, based on listeners' votes. Here is a sampling of some of the songs from the '60s that made the 2004 list (not counted down in order).

I promise to go under it."

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was voted into the #68 spot on the countdown? "Listen to me, baby, you gotta understand, You're old enough to know the makings of a man. Listen to me, baby, it's hard to settle down. Am I asking too much for you to stick around?"

Answer: Lightning Strikes

"Lightning Strikes" was the first and only number one hit for Lou Christie. Christie's first song, "Rhapsody in the Rain", was banned in many places because of its suggestive lyrics. As far as I'm concerned "Lightning Strikes" should have been banned because of its heavily chauvinistic lyrics.
"I Can't Help Myself", by the Four Tops, was #77 on the countdown, "Sugar Shack", by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs, was #129, and "Walk Like a Man" was #154 for the Four Seasons.
2. What song was #128 on the 2004 countdown? "Try to see it my way, Do I have to keep on talking 'till I can't go on? While you see it your way, Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone."

Answer: We Can Work it Out

Another Lennon/McCartney masterpiece, "We Can Work it Out" spent five weeks at number one in the UK and 3 weeks in the same spot in the US.
Also by the Beatles, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was #121 on the countdown, "Rock and Roll Music" was #101 and "Nowhere Man" was #172.
There are 33 Beatles songs on the countdown for 2004.
3. What was #81 on the Oldies 1150 countdown? "Does your memory stray to a bright sunny day When I kissed you and called you sweetheart? Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?"

Answer: Are You Lonesome Tonight

Elvis Presley had 5 number one hits in the early '60s, including this one from 1960. This was also the year that Elvis was discharged from the army, and a young Priscilla Beaulieu spent Christmas with him at Graceland.
Also by Elvis, "It's Now or Never" was #164 on the countdown, "Return to Sender" was #11, and "Little Sister" was #296.
4. What was song #135 on the countdown? "A winter's day, In a deep and dark December, I am alone. Gazing from my window, To the streets below, On a freshly fallen, Silent shroud of snow."

Answer: I Am a Rock

"I Am a Rock" was first released on Paul Simon's solo album, "The Paul Simon Song Book" during one of the duo's many splits. This version was re-released by Simon and Garfunkel on their "Sounds of Silence" album, after they got back together.
"She'd Rather Be With Me", by the Turtles, was #193 on the countdown, "Cathy's Clown", by the Everly Brothers was #246 and "Somebody to Love", by the Jefferson Airplane, was #402.
5. What was song #155 on the countdown? "Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship, My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip, My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'. I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade, Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it."

Answer: Mr. Tambourine Man

Although written by Bob Dylan, "Mr. Tambourine Man" was a bigger hit for the Byrds, a group that is often seen as being responsible for the emergence of folk/rock.
"Turn, Turn, Turn", also by the Byrds, was #82 on the countdown, "You've Really Got Me", by the Kinks, was #348 and "Get Together", by the Youngbloods, was #389.
6. What was song #217 on the countdown? "So I wait, and in a while, I will see my true love smile. She may come, I know not when, When she does, I'll know. So baby until then, Lock me away, And don't allow the day, Here inside, where I hide with my loneliness. I don't care what they say, I won't stay..."

Answer: In a World Without Love

Sometimes described as the British answer to the Everly Brothers, Peter and Gordon owe a lot of their early success to the fact that Peter Asher's sister was dating Paul McCartney, who actually lived in the Asher home for a while.
Written by McCartney, "World Without Love" was the first non-Beatle British Invasion song to hit number one.
"Happy Together", by the Turtles, made #14 on the countdown, "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", by Marvin Gaye, made #191, and "Palisade Park", by Freddy Cannon, was #58.
7. What song was #237 on the countdown? "We skipped the light fandango, Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor. I was feeling kinda seasick, But the crowd called out for more. The room was humming harder, As the ceiling flew away. When we called out for another drink, The waiter brought a tray."

Answer: A Whiter Shade of Pale

Even though "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was Procol Harum's first release, it managed to make it to number one on the US charts. This was a feat that not many British groups, including the Beatles, managed to achieve.
"Rhythm of the Rain", by the Cascades, was #168 on the countdown, "Do You Believe in Magic", by the Lovin' Spoonful was #224, and "Two Faces Have I", by Lou Christie, was #496.
8. What song was #271 on the countdown? "(Hand-me-down) When she was just a kid her clothes were hand-me-down. (Hand-me-down) They always laughed at her when she came into town. Called her rag doll, little rag doll. Such a pretty face should be dressed in lace."

Answer: Rag Doll

Written by Gaudio and Crewe, "Rag Doll" was the fourth number one hit for Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, and their last number one until their come-back hit in 1973, "December '63 (Oh What a Night)".
9. What song was #3 on the countdown? "Like a river flows, Surely to the sea, Darling so it goes, Some things are meant to be. Take my hand, take my whole life too..."

Answer: Can't Help Falling in Love With You

Written by George Weiss, Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore, "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" was released by Elvis Presley in '62, at a time when he was not touring and was concentrating on making some really bad films. "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" did not make it to number one for the King.
Also by Elvis, "Good Luck Charm" was #362 on the countdown, "His Latest Flame" was #409, and "In the Ghetto" was #65.
Elvis had 27 songs on the Oldies 1150 Big 500 Countdown for 2004.
10. What was the #10 song on the countdown? "There is a house in New Orleans, They call the Rising Sun. And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy, And God I know I'm one."

Answer: House of the Rising Sun

The Animals scored a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic with this version of a song previously covered by Bob Dylan. Curiously enough, although Dylan is responsible for writing a few of the songs on the countdown, he only has one actual entry of his own, "Lay Lady Lay", at #427.
"People Gotta Be Free", by the Rascals, was #64 on the countdown, "Bread and Butter", by the Newbeats, was #183, and "Poor Side of Town", by Johnny Rivers, was #236.
