Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hey there Little Red Riding Hood You sure are looking good You're everything a big bad wolf could want" Which band sang these lyrics?

Answer: Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs reached Number two on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Li'l Red Riding Hood" in August, 1966. "Wooly Bully" was also one of their hits. Lead singer Domingo "Sam" Samudio was born in Dallas, Texas.
2. "Old King Cole was a merry old soul And a merry old soul was he So he called for his pipe And he called for his bowl And he called for his fiddlers three" are lyrics from the song, "The Musical Box." Which band recorded it?

Answer: Genesis

Peter Gabriel was still lead vocal and front man at the time that their third solo album, "Nursery Cryme," came out in 1971. The song was over ten minutes long.

There's a really great Canadian cover band called The Musical Box if you want to get a taste of what Genesis was like back in the day. They even have some of their old equipment!
3. "But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man That he didn't, didn't already have And cause never was the reason for the evening Or the tropic of Sir Galahad" are lyrics from "Tin Man" by what band?

Answer: America

America had a few hits in the 70s and early 80s, including "A Horse with No Name," "Sister Golden Hair" and "Ventura Highway." "Tin Man" was from their "Holiday" album, released in 1974 and produced by George Martin, who famously worked with the Beatles.
4. This harmonica-led band had a song called "The Hook" which included these lyrics: "No matter how much Peter loved her, what made the Pan refuse to grow?" Who is this band?

Answer: Blues Traveler

"The Hook" is on the album "Four," released in 1994. It is a variation of Pachelbel's "Canon in D." "The Hook" is actually a song about songwriting and how the "hook" pulls you back into the song.
5. "Tom Sawyer" is a song by what power trio?

Answer: Rush

"Tom Sawyer" was on Rush's "Moving Pictures" album, released in 1981. The song has been included on compilation albums as well. In 2009, VH1 named "Tom Sawyer" as its number 19 Greatest Hard Rock Song of all time.
6. Grace Slick penned this song about a girl named Alice for what band that she and husband, Gerald "Jerry" Slick, formed? (Be careful!)

Answer: The Great Society

"One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice when she's ten feet tall"

are some of the lyrics to "White Rabbit."

Grace and then-husband, "Jerry" Slick, formed The Great Society in 1965. Grace joined Jefferson Airplane in 1966 and brought along two of her songs from The Great Society: "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," both of which became huge hits for Airplane. She performed with the later versions of the original Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship.

Janis Joplin sang with Big Brother.
7. "All the king's horses and all the king's men They couldn't put our two hearts together again" are lyrics from the song, "All the King's Horses." While this is a love song, what nursery rhyme character comes to mind?

Answer: Humpty Dumpty

The song was on English soul singer/songwriter/actress, Joss Stone's "Soul Sessions" album released in 2003. It was originally recorded by Aretha Franklin and included on her "Young, Black and Gifted" album released in 1972.

The Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme included the verse,

"All the king's horses and all the king's men
couldn't put Humpty together again."

Humpty Dumpty was a large canon which fell from the protective wall of St. Mary's Wall Church in Colchester, England during the English Civil War of 1642-1649.
8. The Grateful Dead had a song on their "In the Dark" album called "Throwing Stones." The chorus is: "Ashes to ashes all fall down." What nursery rhyme is this verse from?

Answer: Ring around the Rosy

"Ring around the Rosy" is thought to be a grim little rhyme about the Bubonic Plague. Symptoms of the plague include a rosy red skin rash shaped like a ring.

The Dead's "Throwing Stones" is about our inability to get along with each other and how it's up to all of us to make a better world.
9. "Christopher Robin and I walked alone Under branches lit up by the moon" is the first line from the song, "House on Pooh Corner." Who wrote this song?

Answer: Kenny Loggins

Christopher Robin was the son of A.A. Milne, the author of "Winnie the Pooh." Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded the song first in 1970 but Loggins and Messina had the most memorable version and included it on their first album, "Sittin' In" released in 1971. Cat Stevens never recorded this song despite rumors that he did.
10. Not a song, but an interesting urban legend. Supposedly if you play a certain rock album at the same time as a well-known children's movie, the music follows the actions on the screen. The album is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." What is this classic children's movie?
