Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Charlie Dore was a one hit wonder best known for her song "Pilot of the Airwaves". What is the next verse in this popular song? "Pilot of the airwaves, ___________________"

Answer: "here is my request"

Charlie Dore was an English singer and songwriter that has had a career spanning from the 1980s to the 2000s. Throughout the years, however, she has not had much success in North America with the exception of her 1980 hit "Pilot of the Airwaves". This hit reached #13 on the US charts that year, however, her follow-up song "Fear of Flying" did not have any success whatsoever.

In 2006, Dore released her album "Cuckoo Hill" which was hoped to have renewed success for Dore.
2. The Korgis produced their one and only major hit in 1980. The popular song was entitled "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime". How should the lyrics be completed? "Change your heart, look around you Change your heart, ___________________"

Answer: "it will astound you"

"Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" was the only major North American hit for The Korgis in 1980. In 1979, they managed to gain popularity in Britain with their song "If I Had You" which reached #13 on the music charts in the UK. In the United States, "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" managed to reach #11 on the charts in 1980, and reached #5 in the United Kingdom. Much of the song is repetitive and was popularized by the following lyrics:

"Change your heart, look around you
Change your heart, it will astound you

I need your loving, like the sunshine,
Oh....

And everybody's got to learn sometime
Everybody's got to learn sometime
Everybody's got to learn sometime"
3. The song "Funkytown" was first introduced to the music world by the group Lipps Inc. It was recorded in August of 1979, however, it finally became a hit around the world in the spring of 1980. How should they lyrics to this popular song be completed? "Gotta make a move to a town that's right for me. Town to keep me movin' keep me groovin' __________________"

Answer: "with some energy"

The song "Funkytown" was first noticed by the world when Lipps Inc. took the song to the top 100 on the US Billboard Charts and to even higher success when they reached #2 on the British charts in 1980. It was a success in many countries around the world including Canada, United States, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. "Funkytown" has the rare distinction of being one of a very few songs to be a one hit wonder song for two or more bands.

In 1986, "Funkytown" was covered by Australian band Pseudo Echo and reached #1 in Australia for seven straight weeks.
4. Benny Mardones had a popular romantic hit which peaked at #11 on the Billboard charts in 1980. How should the lyrics be completed? "If I could fly I'd pick you up I'd take you into the night And show you a love _________?

Answer: "like you've never seen"

"Into The Night" has the rare distinction of being the only song (as of 2007), to reach the Billboard top 20 twice. In 1980, the song peaked at #11 on the Billboard 100. The song was re-released in 1989 for the television show "Where Are They Now". As it was re-released, it was eligible for the Billboard charts again, and managed to make it to #20 that year.
5. The New Wave band The Vapors release the hit song "Turning Japanese" in 1980. The song is a bizarre song that is considered by many to have two possible meanings. According to the lyrics, what is the colour of the hair and eyes of the person who wrote the letter? "I've got your picture of me and you You wrote "I love you" I wrote "me too" I sit there staring and there's nothing else to do Oh it's in color Your hair is ________ Your eyes are ________ And soft as clouds I often kiss you when there's no one else around"

Answer: brown and hazel

The song "Turning Japanese" has two possible meanings to it. The first is that is has been thought to have been a love song. The second is suggested that the song is about a man that is discussing his ostracization from the world. Regardless of the song's meaning, "Turning Japanese" sparked popularity the moment that it was released in 1980.

Unfortunately, this hit would be the only success the band would ever have. Other songs like "Jimmie Jones" (about cult leader Jim Jones) did not pan out for the band.

The success of "Turning Japanese" is still evident even after its 25th Anniversary. "Turning Japanese" has been played in various successful movies including "Charlie's Angels", "Jackass: The Movie", and "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion".

It has also been covered (with limited success) by various popular musicians including Liz Phair, No Use For A Name, and Jawbreaker.
6. Gary Numan was a significant influence to the music genre of New Wave as he popularized the use of synthesizers during the late 1970s and early 1980s. His most popular hit and only one to gain any chart topping success in North America was the song "Cars". What is the missing word to complete the lyrics to this popular synthetic song? "Here in my car I feel safest of all I can lock all my doors It's the only way to _________ In cars"

Answer: live

Gary Anthony James Webb (better known as Gary Numan) sparked a great deal of success for the New Wave genre of music in the late 1970s and 1980s. His hit "Cars" reached the top 10 in North America in 1980. "Cars" was from the unique and classic album "The Pleasure Principle".

The reason this album is classified as historical and unique is for the sole purpose that there are no guitars in any of the songs recorded. Numan was reknowned for using synthesizers to replace common instruments such as the guitar and in recent years, Numan has become known as "the godfather of electronic music" by many in the music industry.
7. Steve Forbert reached #11 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1980 with his song "Romeo's Tune". The song was originally thought to be about the Supremes singer Florence Ballard, however, it was later revealed that the song was really about a girl from Forbert's hometown of Meridian, Mississippi. What is the missing word to complete these lyrics from "Romeo's Tune"? "Meet me in the middle of the day Let me hear you say everything's okay Bring me _________ kisses from your room Meet me in the middle of the night"

Answer: southern

At the time of Steve Forbert's hit "Romeo's Tune", he was considered by many to have been the new "Bob Dylan" of the music industry. Evidently, this was not the case. "Romeo's Tune" reached #11 in 1980 and this would be the only success for Forbert.
8. "Rappers Delight" is considered by many to be the first hip hop single to become popular on a global scale. How should the lyrics by the Sugarhill Gang be completed? "Check it out, I'm the C-A-S-A, the N-O-V-A, And the rest is _______

In 1980, "Rappers Delight" ranked at #36 on the US pop charts, #4 on the US R&B charts, and #3 on the UK singles charts.

It is suggested that "Rappers Delight" was an inspirational song for groups such as Blondie and Queen that produced "rap/hip hop like songs when they recorded "Rapture" and "Another One Bites The Dust".
9. Amy Holland is most noted for her one hit wonder single "How Do I Survive" which peaked at #22 in 1980. Her follow up hit "Aint Nothing Like The Real Thing" was not as great of a success. How would you correctly complete the lyrics to her song "How Do I Survive"? "I'm not strong enough Just to smile and make things easy I can't put on that _______ face anymore I always took it for granted

Answer: brave

Amy Holland gained fame as a country singer with her hit "How Do I Survive". She was awarded a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1981, however, this would be as far as her success would go. In 1983, her second album had the song "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing"/"You're All I Need to Get By" released, however, it did not gain the success of her debut song.
10. Johnny Lee had a great deal of success in the country music world, however, he only had one hit that was successful on the US pop charts. "I was lookin for love in all the wrong places, lookin' for love in too many faces, searchin her eyes, lookin' for traces, of _____________.

Answer: "what I'm dreamin' of"

As a pop singer, Johnny Lee only had success with his hit "Lookin' For Love". This hit would become successful as it was included in the soundtrack for the movie "Urban Cowboy". As a country singer, Lee had great success including four hits that made the Hot Country Singles chart; "One In A Million", "Bet Your Heart On Me", "The Yellow Rose", and You Could Have Heard a Heartbreak".
