Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One memorable tune from 1981 was brought to us by The Afternoon Delights. In a successful musical creation, they chose to sing a parody hit based on the television show "General Hospital". How would you complete the lyrics to this popular one hit wonder song? "_______ kept his cool He ain't no fool He set them both up cold Well ________ died Hutch survived And no one got the gold"

Answer: "Luke" and "Sally"

The Afternoon Delights did a parody song on the popular soap opera "General Hospital" called "General Hospi-Tale". The Afternoon Delights consisted of four female singers; Janet Powell, Rebecca Hall, Suzanne Boucher, and Robalee Barnes. "General Hospi-Tale" would be the only hit song for this quartet reaching as high as number 23 on the North American R&B charts and number 33 on the Billboard 100.
2. The O'Jays and The Spinners relied heavily on funk writer Frankie Smith in order to achieve high musical success. Upon becoming a solo singer, Frankie Smith released his own one hit wonder "Double Dutch Bus" in the summer of 1981. "Double Dutch Bus" was easily remembered for its introductory line. How would one finish the lyrics to this intro line? "Give me a ______ if you've got your funky bus fare..."

Answer: HO

Frankie Smith revolutionized the funk music industry with his one hit wonder song "Double Dutch Bus" when he introduced what some might consider a new "language" to funk. In this hit song, Frankie Smith began to make slang out of common every day words by adding the word "izz" as an infix to the lyrics of his songs. One catchy phrase from the song was "Willze aillzll plizzay Dizzouble Dizzutch".

In common English, this phrase means "We all play Double Dutch", however, by adding "izz" to the middle of the words, he created a multitude of unique lyrics for his music.

Unfortunately, this would be the only hit that Frankie Smith would have as a solo artist. "Double Dutch Bus" hit the Billboard Top 40 in July 1981.
3. It is rare that a Dutch band has success on the Billboard Charts in North America. The band Diesel defied these odds and had great success with their hit "Sausalito Summernight". What would be the correct way to finish the chorus to this popular hit? "________________ (Sausalito summernight)"

Answer: All Aboard

Strangely enough, the band Diesel had already split up in their homeland The Netherlands before this "Sausalito Summernight" reached success in North America. In fact, in an unusual musical feat, this particular hit was very unsuccessful in The Netherlands, however, when it hit the radio waves in North America it became an instant success.

The song reached a peak at number 25 on the US Billboard charts, while in Canada, the song went all the way to number one. The band formed again to create another album in 1982; however, this album flopped and broke the band. Following their 1982 album, the band parted ways for good.
4. Rocky Burnette (along with others), tried to revive the rockabilly style of music in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He hit instant success with his top ten hit "Tired Of Toein' The Line" in 1981. In the opening lyrics to the song, what is his "baby's jump" doing to him? "Baby I'm Tired of toein' the line Don't know why you wanna jump on me Baby, baby, baby ____________________"

Answer: "It's makin' me cry"

Rocky Burnette, interestingly enough, is the son of the infamous rockabilly singer Johnny Burnette. Tragically, his father passed away in a boating accident when Rocky was young. Burnette's hit "Tired Of Toein' The Line" is about a couple's break-up after one begins to control and abuse the other.

The song was very successful and reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. To make the song an even greater success, it tied Johnny Burnette's "You're Sixteen" to become the greatest selling Burnette family song of all time.
5. Joey Scarbury was a contemporary singer who struck gold with his theme song from the popular television show "Greatest American Hero". The song "Believe It Or Not" is still popular among one hit wonder connoisseurs around the world. How would one finish the chorus to this popular theme song? "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free-. Flying away on a wing and ___________"

Answer: a prayer

As a child, Scarbury was influenced by his mother who encouraged him to sing because she felt that he had talent. In 1969-70, at the age of 14, Scarbury recorded his first single "She Never Smiles Anymore"; however, it did not make the charts. During the 1970s, Scarbury was unsuccessful as a singer and it was not until 1981 that he recorded his one and only chart topping hit "Believe It Or Not".

As an extended version, this song would reach as high as number two on the Billboard Hot 100 that year.
6. Although Meatloaf had a hit with the song "Rock & Roll Dreams Come Through" in 1993, Jim Steinman had originally had a hit with this song back in 1981. "I _____________ your love, I never want to lose it You've been through the fires of hell And I know you've got the ashes to prove it"

In 1978, Seymour would leave the band after a series of misfortunes.

It would not be until 1981 when Seymour would have additional success as a singer. As a solo artist, Seymour would only have the luxury of being a one hit wonder. His hit "Precious To Me" would reach number 22 on the charts. Tragically, in 1984, Seymour would be diagnosed as having lymphoma after noticing swollen lymph nodes while on tour with his new band The Textones.

Answer: Devil

In 1981, country singer Terri Gibbs would record her one and only pop chart hit "Somebody's Knockin'".
