Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In March of 1982, Buckner and Garcia peaked at number 9 on the pop charts in the United States with their classic video game hit "Pac Man Fever". How should the lyrics to this creative, but yet, unusual song be completed? "'Cause I got Pac Man Fever, ____________________"

Answer: "It's driving me crazy"

"Pac Man Fever" was the only major success hit for Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia and was recorded on the album of the same name. The song came out in 1982 during the Pac Man video game craze. Buckner and Garcia were signed by CBS in 1982 to put out an album quickly because they wanted to have "Pac Man Fever" recorded and distributed before the Pac Man fad had passed.

Their insights were accurate and "Pac Man Fever" was a successful song reaching number nine on the charts. The song, however, faded away just as fast as the Pac Man video game craze itself and became a one hit wonder.

The "Pac Man Fever" album is very unusual. The album is a video game song album. All songs on the album are about popular video games from the 1980s. Tracks on the album include "Froggy's Lament" about the popular game Frogger, "Do The Donkey Kong" about the popular video game Donkey Kong, and "Ode To A Centipede" about the video game Centipede.
2. Fictional Canadian brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie recorded two albums with limited success in the early 1980s. Their most notable song "Take Off" came from their first album "The Great White North: Bob and Doug McKenzie" that was recorded in 1981. What is the second line in this two-liner song? "Take off, to the great white north, Take off, _________________________"

Answer: "It's the beauty way to go"

Bob and Doug McKenzie were two fictional television characters played by actors Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. As their fictional characters, they are best known for their roles in the popular television show "The Great White North" and the movie "Strange Brew".

As a duo, they recorded two music albums with limited success. Their first album gained the most success in which they recorded the songs "Take Off" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas". "Take Off" would peak at number 16 on the Billboard 100 in March 1982. "Take Off" featured the singer Geddy Lee from the popular Canadian band Rush performing with the McKenzie brothers.
3. Originally recorded in 1965 by The Strangeloves, "I Want Candy" once again peaked on the charts, reaching number nine on the UK singles charts when Bow Wow Wow released it in 1982. According to the lyrics, what is going to happen once she "makes him mine"? "Candy on the beach, there's nothing better I like Candy when he's (she's) wrapped in a sweater. Some day soon I'll make you mine, ____________"

Answer: "then I'll have candy all the time"

Bow Wow Wow was a New Wave group best known for their hit "I Want Candy". They were best known for their melodies which often incorporated African drum sounds. Lead singer Annabella Lwin was only fourteen years old when she was discovered and picked out as the lead singer of the band.

Many people recognize her for her trademark "squeal". Lwin was often the subject of controversy while with Bow Wow Wow based on the fact that she was only a teenager at the time of the "I Want Candy" recording. One main controversy surrounding Lwin was that her mother was concerned about Annabella's well being and instigated an investigation with the Scotland Yard.

She claimed that Annabella was being used for immoral purposes such as being portrayed as a "sex kitten". Due to Annabella's age, an agreement was made that she was not to be depicted in a nude photograph of Manet's "The Luncheon on the Grass" painting.
4. Bertie Higgins became an instant success in 1982 when he recorded a song that referenced a popular Humphrey Bogart film. Higgins' top ten song "Key Largo" was recorded for his "Just Another Day in Paradise" album and would become his one and only major hit. How should the introduction to this Hollywood like song be completed? "Wrapped around each other Trying so hard ___________"

Answer: "to stay warm"

Bertie Higgins was very successful with the song "Key Largo" as it references and reminds us of the nature of the Florida Keys, romance, and success associated with the acting of the 1940s. In this particular song, there is a great deal of reference to Humphrey Bogart and his successful film "Key Largo". Higgins' "Key Largo" gives many listeners a sense and ability to reminisce about positive romantic events or experiences that they have endured in their lives:

"Wrapped around each other
Trying so hard to stay warm
That first cold winter together
Lying in each other's arms
Watching those old movies
Falling in love so desperately
Honey I was your hero
And you were my leading lady

CHORUS:
We had it all
Just like Bogie and Bacall
Starring in own old late, late show
Sailing away to Key Largo

Honey can't you remember
We played all the parts
That sweet scene of surrender
When you gave me your heart
Please say you will...play it again
'Cause I love you still
Baby this can't be the end

CHORUS

Here's lookin' at you kid
Missing all the things we did
We can find it once again, I know
Just like they did in Key Largo"
5. The Waitresses were an experimental New Wave band originating out of Kent, Ohio. In 1982, they released their hit "I Know What Boys Like" on their second album "Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful". The album would reach number 41 on the Billboard 200. According to the lyrics, what seems to frustrate boys? "I got my cat moves That so upset them ___________________ Fun to frustrate them"

Answer: zippers and buttons

The Waitresses are best known for their hit song "I Know What Boys Like" as it was featured in the short lived television series "Square Pegs". "I Know What Boys Like" is a song that seems to depict a woman that is playing the role of a "tease" when around males.

The song has since been re-recorded by a few artists including the popular singer Vitamin C. In 1996, lead singer Patty Donahue, a chronic smoker, tragically passed away of lung cancer, over 15 years after The Waitresses had parted ways.
6. Canadian singer Aldo Nova had a hit with their song "Fantasy" that peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 100 in May of 1982 and all the way to number 3 on the Mainstream rock charts. What are the streets like according to the lyrics in the song "Fantasy"? "City nights summer breeze makes you feel alright Neon lights shining brightly make your brain ignite See the girls with the dresses so tight Give you love, if the price is right Black or white in the streets _____________________"

Answer: "there's no wrong and no right"

Aldo Nova was born Aldo Caporuscio and is a famous Canadian guitarist, keyboardist, producer, and vocalist. He is best known for his hit "Fantasy". Although he had two more hits on the Mainstream rock charts, Aldo Nova never again reached the Billboard charts.

His solo career began to dwindle in the mid-1980s when he was in demand to play for other bands, rather than as a solo artist. Aldo Nova has worked with many popular musicians including Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, and Clay Aiken.
7. Members of the band Wall of Voodoo claim that they came up with the idea of the song "Mexican Radio" while listening to 1930s border-blaster radio stations from Mexico. What is the food of choice that should complete the lyric? "I wish I was in Tijuana, eating barbequed ________"

Answer: iguana

The Wall of Voodoo were a bizarre New Wave group that formed in 1977 and are known specifically for their one hit wonder song "Mexican Radio". Wall of Voodoo were known for their distinct sound that incorporated both synthesizer based sounds with spaghetti western music styles.

The song "Mexican Radio" was a catchy song that outlined various situations including government, religion, and economics. Wall of Voodoo was active as a band until 1988, however, they had limited success after "Mexican Radio" was released.

The band is one of many tragic stories in the music industry. Between the year 2000 and 2002, Wall of Voodoo would lose two of their original members. On December 4, 2000, drummer Joe Nanini (famous for using abstract objects such as pots and pans) would tragically sustain a brain hemmorrage and pass away. Nearly two years later, guitarist Marc Moreland would succumb to liver failure in Paris France in 2002.
8. American singer Charlene originally recorded the song "I've Never Been To Me" in 1976, however, it was not until 1982 when popular Florida disc jockey Michael Scott Shannon began playing her song on WRBQ-FM out of Tampa, Florida that the song gained fame. According to the final lines of the first chorus, where has the character been? "But I ran out of places and friendly faces Because I had to be free I've been to _________ but I've never been to me..."

Answer: paradise

"I've Never Been To Me" made the Top 100 twice in the United States. In 1976, when the song was first released, the song reached number 97 on the charts. At this point, this was the only success the song would have. In 1982, however, the song was re-released after Michael Scott Shannon began playing the song again on popular radio station WRBQ-FM. During its second release, the song peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 100.

"I've Never Been To Me" was misconceived as being a song about abortion. Throughout the years, however, it has been clarified that the lyric "I've been to crying for unborn children" was not about abortion, but rather, about a woman that wished she had taken the time to have children. The song is unique because it was released under two names. During the first recording in 1976, Charlene was married to producer Larry Duncan. As a result, it was recorded under the name Charlene Duncan. When it became popular again in 1982, Charlene had since remarried to Jeff Oliver. During its re-release, it was recorded under the name Charlene Oliver.
9. In 1964, Ed Cobb composed the song "Tainted Love" for recording by Gloria Jones. In 1975, Ruth Swan re-recorded the song with an electronic pop sound. It wasn't until 1982, however, that the Synth-pop duo Soft Cell took the song to new heights. In the opening lines of the song, what is the song character trying to get away from? "Sometimes I feel I've got to... Run away I've got to... Get away... From the ______ that you drive into the heart of me"

Answer: pain

Soft Cell was the New Wave pop duo consisting of Marc Almond and David Ball. The song was expected to be nothing more than a "throwaway" cover song, however, it turned out to be an extremely huge success for the duo. It number 8 on the US pop charts and went to number 1 in the UK.

At the time, "Tainted Love" made the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest consecutive stay on the Billboard 100 (43 weeks).
10. A catchy tune for music lovers across the world. A video popularized by cheerleading. A song that will forever be remembered as one of the most popular one hit wonders of the 1980s. Antonia Christina Basilotta (AKA Toni Basil) recorded the song "Mickey" in 1979, however, it wasn't until December of 1982 that this smash hit peaked on the Billboard charts. How should one fill in the blank to this ever so popular chorus? "Oh Mickey, what a _____, you don't understand You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand"

Answer: pity

Toni Basil would have success with her pop anthem "Mickey" particularly because of MTV's constant airing of the music video. At the time, MTV was relatively new and only had a limited collection of music videos to play. The song was originally recorded by a group called Racey entitled "Kitty". Basil changed the title and some of the lyrics to make it her own.

The video for the song includes many cheerleaders from Carson high school in Los Angeles and it was Basil herself that directed and choreographed the music video. "Mickey" has been successful both on its own and as a parody. Weird Al Yankovic had success with his parody song "Ricky", about the famous "I Love Lucy" character Ricky Ricardo.
