Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Dark Horse": This first "dark" album comes from a legendary musician and former Fab Four member. Which Beatle got laryngitis before his 1974 tour for this album and was consequently panned as "Dark Hoarse"?

Answer: George Harrison

George Harrison was so ill that Ravi Shankar, his co-headliner, took over a large portion of the show. Since this was the first post-Beatles tour in the U.S. by a former member of the band, expectations were high and many were disappointed. This was also a time of upheaval in George Harrison's life, in which he founded his new record label, Dark Horse Records, delved deeply back into alcohol and drugs, and was left by his wife, Patty Boyd, for Eric Clapton. Harrison rewrote the Everly Brothers' hit "Bye Bye Love" for the album, including the line "There goes our lady, with a-you-know-who / I hope she's happy, old Clapper too."
2. Nickelback titled their 2008 album "Dark Horse". Though the album and its singles sold many albums, its biggest claim to fame was that one single was used in the promotional videos for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Which appropriately titled song was it?

Answer: If Today Was Your Last Day

The song was originally intended to be the first single released from "Dark Horse", but was replaced at the last minute by "Gotta Be Somebody". It subsequently became the third single and had 1.5 million U.S. downloads in less than a year. Lead singer Chad Kroeger says it's his favorite track from the album.
3. Many bands and artists choose to make one of their albums eponymous, meaning it has the same name as they do. One such new wave group has the initials O.M.D., but what does it stand for?

Answer: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

OMD's first album, "Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark" was released in 1980 and went gold in the U.K. It contained the popular hit "Enola Gay".
4. The Grateful Dead's twelfth studio album, "In the Dark", contained a very upbeat hit. What Jerry Garcia song, which sounds like it might be nearly "in the dark", became the band's first music video?

Answer: Touch of Grey

The video for "Touch of Grey" features skeletons dressed as the band playing the song for a live audience. It also became the band's only Top 40 hit in the U.S.
5. The single "Dark Lady" on the album of the same name was this artist's last U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number one hit before her un"Believe"-able comeback in 1998.

Answer: Cher

After "Dark Lady", Cher went 24 years before her next big hit, the earworm "Believe". "Dark Lady" tells a truly dark story in which a woman discovers her lover having an affair with her fortune teller and kills them both. The video was a cartoon which told the story of the song as well.
6. Which artist released "Home Before Dark" as his 27th album and became the oldest performer to have a number one record on the U.S. Billboard 200? He really is "Forever in Blue Jeans".

Answer: Neil Diamond

Although Neil Diamond took the oldest performer record from Bob Dylan in 2008, Dylan reclaimed it in 2009. Coincidentally, the last track on the album is a cover of Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love".
7. The album "Dark Night of the Soul", a writing collaboration by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse featuring many indie artists, was released with a 100-page book of photos. What "Twin Peaks" director was the photographer for this "visual narrative" of the album?

Answer: David Lynch

A legal dispute with the record company led the book to be released before the album. The book was sold online and included a blank CD-R, which was labeled: "For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will." Soon after the album was leaked online.
8. The third single from "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", "Monster", had such disturbing, misogynist imagery in its video that it was banned by MTV. What already controversial rapper was responsible for this "monstrous" song?

Answer: Kanye West

The "Monster" video features dead women hanging from nooses, lying with Kanye in a bed, and even decapitated. Nikki Minaj appears as two characters: one a gothic dominatrix and the other a pink-haired girl being tortured by herself. MTV requested edits to be made to the video to make it appropriate for broadcast, but the video was only released online.
9. "Footsteps in the Dark" is the title of the second Greatest Hits compilation by this folk artist. The album contains favorites like "Father and Son" and "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out".

Answer: Cat Stevens

Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, formerly known as Steven Demetre Georgiou, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. He adopted the name Yusuf Islam in 1978 when he left the music business to work exclusively on causes for the Muslim community. 28 years later in 2006, he finally released a new album, "An Other Cup" under the mononym Yusuf.
10. No dark quiz would be complete without a trip to the "Dark Side of the Moon". But did you know that Pink Floyd were such fans of Monty Python that they would interrupt studio time to watch "Monty Python's Flying Circus"? They even used some of the proceeds from "Dark Side of the Moon" to fund which Monty Python film?
