Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Genesis were one of the pioneers of progressive rock. Which of these drum masters never played with them?

Answer: Andy Ward

Bruford and Thompson played with them live, while Phil Collins was singing. Nick D'Virgilio did some work on Calling All Stations. Andy Ward was the original drummer for Camel.
2. 1973 was a great year for progressive rock. Which of these bands released their first album that year?

Answer: Camel

Camel's eponymous album came out in 1973. Both Rush and Kansas released their firsts in 1974, while Premiata Forneria Marconi's "Storia di un Minuto" came out in 1972. Personally, I think PFM was the only band to start off with a strong debut!
3. Gentle Giant are one of the quintessential prog bands, known for playing many different instruments on stage. What instrument did not make an appearance on "Live: Playing the Fool"?

Answer: flute

They did play the recorder, which might be mistaken for a flute.
4. Although England saw the birth of prog, Italy produced some notable prog bands later. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Terpandre

Terpandre are a little known French band from the 70s. The other three are Italian prog giants.
5. Canterbury prog is a subset of the genre from that area of England. Two bands branched off of the band The Wilde Flowers and became the forerunner of Canterbury prog. Who were they?

Answer: Soft Machine and Caravan

Egg developed later, Gong was formed by an ex-Soft Machine member after Soft Machine's existence, Matching Mole was founded by ex-Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt ("Matching Mole" being a corruption of the French translation of Soft Machine), and Camel is not even a Canterbury band!
6. The avant garde has historically been better accepted in France than in some other countries. Perhaps this is why French prog bands often tend to be a bit more, shall we say, eccentric. Which of the following bands can NOT be associated with France?

Answer: Et Cetera

Magma and Shylock were entirely French. Gong was formed in France by Australian ex-pat and former Soft Machine member Daevid Allen, along with several French musicians. Although Et Cetera has French lyrics, they are in fact from Canada.
7. Prog is known for often having very long pieces (compared to mainstream rock). One of the most famous is Genesis' "Supper's Ready", clocking in at almost 23 minutes. What is their next longest? (studio recordings only)

Answer: The Battle of Epping Forest

Unlike bands like Yes, Genesis did not record many long pieces or "epics". None of their other pieces were even close to 20 minutes.
8. Who did Pete Sinfield NOT write lyrics for?

Answer: Rush

He of course only wrote the English lyrics PFM used.
9. Which band did guitar legend Allan Holdsworth NOT play with?

Answer: Caravan

Holdsworth played with several well known prog bands in the 70s, before turning to mostly solo work in the 80s.
10. The dramatic section of "Supper's Ready" is:

Answer: Apocalypse in 9/8

What a great name for a prog piece!
