Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'They went down to one of those cheap motels and they got all gushy & wet' - what song are these lyrics from?

Answer: "Ha Ha Ha" - Flipper

Flipper from San Francisco - one of the most intense punk bands ever. Their late singer Will Shatter scared even Henry Rollins.
2. 'I'm a person just like you. But I've got better things to do than sit around and smoke dope. 'Cause I know I can cope.' - lyrics from what song?

Answer: 'Straight Edge' - Minor Threat

This song was the inspiration for the Straight Edge movement. But Ian MacKaye - singer with Minor threat, now with Fugazi - never wanted anything to do with the extremist behavior straight edgers preach.
3. 'And the commune crapheads sit and whine. While the common near my birthplace is now a police college.'- what song?

Answer: 'Second Dark Age' - the Fall

The Fall. Not real punk according to some. However the only band from the 77 UK generation that hasn't shamed itself. Stayed true to it's ideals of wired social comment with a surreal streak-ah. Their motto : 'We are the Fall. Northern white crap that talks back'.
4. 'Prices have risen since the government fell. Casualties increase as the enemy shell.' - what song?

Answer: 'Reuters' - Wire

Wire were the big intellectuals of the 77 UK scene. Other bands were writing songs about fighting, sniffing glue and girls, while they were singing the praises of Reuters, the international news syndicate. Nice.
5. What punk fanzine printed diagrams of guitar chords A, E and G on one of its covers along with the message: "This is a chord. This is another. This is a third. Now form a band."?

Answer: Sideburns

The message to everybody to go form a band - the DIY-spirit was very big within the punk movement - is generally attributed to "Sniffin' Glue". This fanzine was launched by Alternative TV's singer Mark Perry and ran from early '76 until 1977. In actuality the quote appeared on the cover of the "Sideburns" fanzine, which was published four or five times in 1976 and resembled "Sniffin' Glue", both in style and content.

In early 1977 "Sideburns" editor Tony Moon started a different magazine, "Strangled", which was entirely devoted to the band The Stranglers.
6. 'Punk became a circus didn't it? Everybody got it wrong. The message was supposed to be: Don't follow us, do what you want!' - Who is looking back on the accomplishments of punk in an interview?

Answer: John Lydon, Sex Pistols

Daily Mirror - 21/03/1981. John Lydon / Johnny Rotten is one of the biggest critics of punks' legacy. And right he is. As always.
7. 'Efficiency and progress is ours once more. Now that we have the Neutron bomb. It's nice and quick and clean and gets things done.' - what song?

Answer: 'Kill the Poor' - Dead Kennedys

Jello Biafra - singer with the Dead Kennedys - always took the position of the people he was protesting against in his songs. Here he was singing about killing the poor, while that wasn't at all what he wanted to do. Clever eh?
8. 'They like to buy the O Level single. Or "Read About Seymour". But they're not pressed in red. So they buy the Lurkers instead.' - what song?

Answer: 'Part-Time Punks' - Television Personalities

Television Personalities in this song made fun of the 'Weekender/Trainspotting' mentality of a lot of punk also-rans. And if you don't understand that sentence, you're probably not British.
9. 'Sometimes I`m thinking that I love you. But I know it`s only lust.' - what song?

Answer: 'Damaged Goods' - Gang of Four

The very down to earth Gang Of Four had no illusions about the realities of interhuman connections. But they did believe in communism. Go figure.
10. 'They take away our freedom. In the name of liberty. Why don't they all just clear off? Why won't they let us be?' - what song?

Answer: 'Suspect Device' - Stiff Little Fingers

Stiff Little Fingers came from Belfast - Northern Ireland. A lot of their songs were about the troubles. No wonder they were one of the angriest bands of the '77 generation.
