Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I am an antichrist. I am an anarchist. Don't know what I want but I know how to get it. I wanna destroy the passerby."

Answer: "Anarchy in the UK" - the Sex Pistols

The ultimate punkrock single. Originally recorded for record company EMI in 1976. But then the Sex Pistols started making headlines in the national tabloid papers and EMI got cold feet. The release of the - already pressed - single was scrapped and the Sex Pistols were kicked off the label. Hence the song 'EMI'.
2. "The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in. Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin. A nuclear error, but I have no fear. London is drowning - and I live by the river."

Answer: "London Calling" - the Clash

The title song from punk's first double album. Released in 1979. And in 1980 in the US. So Rolling Stone magazine put it at the top of their 'best albums of the 80s' list. Tsk tsk.
3. "Is she really going out with him? - I got a feeling inside of me. It's kind of strange like a stormy sea. I don't know why I don't know why. I guess these things have got to be."

Answer: "New Rose" - the Damned

The first line refers to the Shangri-Las. Joe Jackson later stole the line. "New Rose" was officially the first single released by an English punk band.
4. "Hey ho, let's go. Shoot'em in the back now. What they want, I don't know. They're all revved up and ready to go."

Answer: "Blitzkrieg Bop" - Ramones

Da brudders' signature tune. From their 1976 debut album.
5. "You spurn my natural emotions. You make me feel like dirt. And I'm hurt. And if I start a commotion. I run the risk of losing you. And that's worse."

Answer: "Ever Fallen in Love (with Someone You shouldn't've Fallen in Love With)" - Buzzcocks

This song was covered by Fine Young Cannibals in 1986, probably the worst cover ever recorded.
6. "Teenage Dreams, so hard to beat. Everytime she walks down the street. Another girl in the neighbourhood. Wish she was mine, she looks so good"

Answer: "Teenage Kicks" - the Undertones

This is legendary DJ John Peel's favourite song ever.
7. "The distant echo - Of faraway voices boarding faraway trains. To take them home to - The ones that they love and who love them forever. The glazed, dirty steps - repeat my own and reflect my thoughts. Cold and uninviting, partially naked - Except for toffee wrappers and this morning's paper. Mr. Jones got run down. Headlines of death and sorrow - they tell of tomorrow. Madmen on the rampage."

Answer: "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" - the Jam

This 1978 single was the Jam's first big hit. Quite a few would follow. "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground", "That's Entertainment" and "Town Called Malice" to name but a few. When the Jam split up in 1982 almost all of the singles they released re-entered the UK charts at the same time.
8. "The end must justify the means. Your generation don't mean a thing to me!"

Answer: "Your Generation" - Generation X

Generation X featured a young Billy Idol and Tony James, who later got infamous as the leader of spandex and plastic-troupe Sigue Sigue Sputnik. "Your Generation" was their answer, of sorts, to old farts The Who's "My Generation".
9. "I am Governor Jerry Brown. My aura smiles and never frowns. Soon I will be president. Carter power will soon go away. I will be Fuhrer one day. I will command all of you. Your kids will meditate in school."

Answer: "California Uber Alles" - Dead Kennedys

"California Uber Alles" was Dead Kennedys' stinging attack on former governor of California, Jerry Brown. You should also check out the cover the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy did of this song; more words per second even.
10. "You don't want me anymore, so I'll just walk right out the door. Played a game right from the start. I trust you, you used me now my hearts all torn apart."

Answer: "Sailin' On" - Bad Brains

The Bad Brains from DC was the first all-black punk band; four big men with mighty dreads who generated a mighty racket. Except on Sundays. The fact they were Rastafarians prohibited them from playing punk on that holy day, so they played reggae instead.
By the way, "Sailin' On" was covered by the band No Doubt, back in the days when they were labouring under the misapprehension that they were punks. Hah!
