Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Deep Purple were formed in Hertford, England, in 1968. Which one of the following was NOT one of the original members?

Answer: Ronnie James Dio

The first Deep Purple line-up consisted of Rod Evans (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Nick Simper (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums). This line-up recorded three albums in the space of a year - "Shades of Deep Purple", "The Book of Taliesyn" and "Deep Purple", none of which charted in their native UK, although they fared somewhat better in the USA.
2. In late 1969, the band decided they wanted to pursue a more hard-rock sound and replaced Evans and Simper with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover respectively. The new line-up's first studio album hit the UK top 10 - what was it called?

Answer: Deep Purple in Rock

This line-up, commonly referred to as Mark II, was the most famous and most commercially successful of all the Deep Purple line-ups over the years. The sleeve of "Deep Purple in Rock" depicted the band members' heads carved into a mountain side, obviously inspired by Mount Rushmore.
3. The 1972 album "Machine Head" spawned Deep Purple's most famous song, "Smoke on the Water". The song tells the story of the problems the band faced whilst recording the album in which Swiss city?

Answer: Montreux

With one of the most famous guitar intros in rock music history, "Smoke on the Water" has been part of every Deep Purple live set since the early 1970s. The song tells the story of how the band went to record "Machine Head" at the Montreux Casino, but had to change their plans after it burned down during a Frank Zappa concert.
4. Following the release of the 1973 album "Who Do we Think We Are", Ian Gillan and Roger Glover departed Deep Purple. Glenn Hughes was the new bass player, but who was the new lead singer?

Answer: David Coverdale

Former Free singer Paul Rodgers was the band's first choice to replace Gillan, but he decided to form a new band, Bad Company, instead. The unknown Coverdale attended an audition and got the job.
5. The Mark III line-up only lasted for a couple of albums before guitarist Ritchie Blackmore departed in 1975. Which American was brought in to replace him?

Answer: Tommy Bolin

The line-up now consisted of Coverdale (vocals), Lord (keyboards), Bolin (guitar), Hughes (bass) and Paice (drums). They made one album, "Come Taste The Band", before they split altogether in 1976. Bolin would sadly die later that year.
6. With Deep Purple on a seemingly permanent hiatus in the late 1970s/early 1980s, the former members became involved in various side projects. Which of the following bands did NOT feature a former Deep Purple member(s)?

Answer: Saxon

Ritchie Blackmore formed Rainbow in 1975, with Roger Glover joining him in 1979. Ian Gillan formed the Ian Gillan band in 1975, and then formed Gillan in 1978 when the former band was dissolved. David Coverdale formed Whitesnake in 1978, with former Deep Purple bandmates Jon Lord and Ian Paice joining him the following year. Saxon were formed in 1976 but didn't feature any former DP members.
7. In 1984, Deep Purple reformed, with the classic Mark II line-up of the early 1970s. Typically, the revival lasted for only two studio albums, 1984's "Perfect Strangers" and which 1987 release?

Answer: The House of Blue Light

"Perfect Strangers" made the top five in the UK album charts, with "The House of Blue Light" reaching number ten, but the strains within the band were already beginning to show, and singer Ian Gillan was sacked in 1989.
8. Which American singer was brought in for just one album, 1990's "Slaves and Masters"?

Answer: Joe Lynn Turner

"Slaves and Masters" bombed, and Turner quickly departed, to be replaced by, yes, Ian Gillan! With Blackmore and Gillan never likely to see eye to eye, this latest reincarnation of the Mark II line-up lasted just one studio album, 1993's "The Battle Rages On".
9. Ritchie Blackmore packed his bags once more in late 1993, and after Joe Satriani filled in to fulfill the band's concert obligations, a new full-time guitarist was recruited in 1994. Which American guitarist filled Blackmore's shoes this time around?

Answer: Steve Morse

Morse had been a member of both Dixie Dregs and Kansas, and his recruitment led to a long period of stability in Deep Purple. The Mark VII line-up of Gillan, Morse, Glover, Lord and Paice remained together for over seven years, and, although they only released two studio albums in that time, they toured almost constantly.
10. In 2002, Jon Lord retired from Deep Purple and was replaced by which former Rainbow keyboardist?

Answer: Don Airey

Airey had recorded or toured with many famous bands over the years, including Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Whitesnake. The 2013 album "Now What?!" was the band's nineteenth studio effort, and their best seller in over 25 years. Only one person, drummer Ian Paice, had appeared on every Deep Purple album up to that date.
