Rock Trios from the Oz Trio Trivia Quiz

The usual requirement for a rock band are a guitarist, a bass player and a drummer. If one of them could sing, you didn't need a fourth. Otherwise just be a great three part harmonizing trio. This is an Oz trio's favourite three piece rock bands quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although the Thompson Twins started off in 1977 as a four member band and at times up to seven members, their greatest success came when the band was a trio (1982 to 1986). Who were the three members?

Answer: Tom Bailey, Joe Leeway, Alannah Currie

Bailey, Leeway and Currie wanted to progress their musical sound in a different direction and intended to leave the Thompson Twins and start a new band. Their manager at the time convinced them to stay as the Thompson Twins and fire the other four band members. To achieve their new sound they travelled and wrote new songs for their new album and achieved success in the UK and the USA.
2. Crowded House was formed in 1985 after the break up of Split Enz by Neil Finn, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. The band at times have had other members including Neil's brother, Tim. Neil is the vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter, Paul is the drummer and Nick is the bass player. The band split in 1996 as Neil wanted to pursue his solo career and duet work with Tim. Nick Seymour has another talent that was used by the band; what is it?

Answer: He is an artist

All Crowded House albums - cover and interior artwork - were designed by Nick. Nick also was involved with the set design of their videos and even designed costumes for the band.
3. Crosby Stills and Nash formed in 1968. All three members came from successful bands in the music scene. Which band did Graham Nash leave to join the trio?

Answer: The Hollies

Graham Nash is from the UK and met Crosby when The Byrds toured England in 1966. When The Hollies toured America in 1988 Nash and Crosby met up again. At a party for Mama Cass, Crosby Stills and Nash did a performance of "You Don't Have To Cry", where they realized that had a great three part harmony together.
4. The Bee Gees - three brothers, Barry, Robin and Maurice, known for their three part harmony - have been performing since 1958. Prolific song writers, performers and recording artists, the Bee Gees have had a string of hits and successes. The real turning point in their career came when they wrote the soundtrack for which movie?

Answer: Saturday Night Fever

Amazingly the Bee Gees wrote the soundtrack for "Saturday Night Fever" over a weekend. The firm was released in 1977 and became a huge box office hit with the Bee Gees' album still in the top five best selling ever.

Unfortunately Maurice passed away in 2003 followed by Robin in 2012.
5. Jimi Hendrix moved to England in September 1966 and formed a band with Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Noel Reading (bass). Reading left in mid-1969, but in those three years, three stunning albums were released. Which one of the following was not a Jimi Hendrix Experience album?

Answer: "May This Be Love" (1967)

Arguably Jimi Hendrix was the greatest rock guitarist of the 20th Century. He was ably backed by Reading and Mitchell. "May This Be Love" was not the name of an album but was the first track on Side B of the first album, "Are You Experienced?" The group's only number one album was their third, "Electric Ladyland".

Incredibly the group never had a Top Ten Hit in the US. Hendrix died prematurely in 1970 aged 27.
6. Three Dog Night were a successful band formed in 1968. The three original members were Danny Hutton, Corey Wells and Chuck Negron. Over the years many others have joined and left with Hutton and Wells still with the band today. Between 1969 and 1975 was their most successful period, having during that time 21 top Billboard hits. Where did they get their name?

Answer: Aboriginal story regarding cold and sleeping with dingoes

It is said that June Fairchild, an ex-girlfriend of Danny Hatton, was reading an article about Australia and in the story it told how the Aboriginals and dingoes sleep. An Aboriginal sleeps with one dingo, if it is a cold night with two dingoes and if it is really cold, it will be a three dog night. On Three Dog Night's official website (www.threedognight.com) it confirms where the name came, an Aboriginal story, but does not confirm that it was June who suggested it.
7. Cream were arguably the first supergroup where each member was a renowned musician in other bands. They were only together for three years, forming in 1966. Which one of the following was not a member of Cream?

Answer: Steve Winwood

Clapton came from The Yardbirds and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Baker and Bruce were from the Graham Bond Organization, and Bruce had played briefly in the Bluebreakers with Clapton and in a short-lived group called Powerhouse with Steve Winwood.

They released four well received albums together, (the third, "Wheels of Fire"(1967) was the first Platinum double album), the fourth being titled appropriately "Goodbye"(1969) which was released after they announced they would break up.
8. Blink-182 were a southern California punk bank with pop roots. By the third album in 1999, the irreverent humour in the lyrics and thrashed guitar was replaced by a more radio-friendly music style. There were three singles on "Enema of the State" (1999)... Which one was not?

Answer: Dude Ranch

Critics argue that Blink-182 caused a second wave of punk bands to emerge (e.g. NOFX). However Blink-182 developed a sound on the interface between pop and punk, and well, 15 million copies of "Enema of the State" couldn't be wrong. The album spawned three singles, the third, "Adam's Song" a song about loneliness and depression, caused controversy when a Columbine survivor was found hanging with this song playing on repeat.

The song was meant to be anti-suicide. "Dude Ranch" was not a single from this album, it was the title of their second album released in 1996.
9. In 1994 three school friends from Teignmouth, Devon, Dominic Howard, Matthew Bellamy and Christopher Wolstenholme formed a progressive/space rock band that had small but loyal following until their third album in 2006, "Black Holes and Revelations", took them into the mainstream and mega-stardom. What is the name of this group?

Answer: Muse

All options are bands that are trios (including Ben Folds Five, formed in North Carolina in 1993 and best known for their 1997 single "Brick"). Silverchair are a Newcastle, Australia, trio that have had all five of their albums peak at number one in Australia.

Their first, "Frogstomp" was recorded whilst all three members were 15 and still attending high school. ZZ Top formed in 1969 and released their fifteenth album in 2012, their most commercial being "Eliminator" (1983) which sold ten million copies. Muse won a Mercury Award in 2006 and since then probably became the most decorated band of the first decade of the 21st century.

They have sold over 20 million albums.
10. While Neil Young might have sung about it first on "Rust Never Sleeps"(1978), Kurt Cobain said, "It's better to burn out than to fade away." These words proved prophetic for Nirvana who released four albums (1989-1993) in their short career. On which album did their single "Heart-Shaped Box" appear?

Answer: In Utero

Nirvana's first album, "Bleach" (1989) generated one single, "Love Buzz" but it wasn't until their second album "Nevermind"(1991) that spawned "Smells Like Teen Spirit", perhaps the greatest teen anthem of the 20th century. "Insecticide"(1992) was a Sub-Pop / DGC records compilation of older songs.

Their last album before Cobain's untimely death in 1994 was "In Utero", a critical and commercial success though not as successful as the second album. Nirvana have sold over 25 million albums.
