Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the two brothers who were founding members of Runrig in 1973?

Answer: Calum and Rory MacDonald

Charlie and Craig Read are twin brothers who make up the Scottish band The Proclaimers. Jackie and Alec Stewart are sportsmen but are not related (racing driver and cricketer). Finally, Ricky Ross is the front man of Scottish band Deacon Blue (I invented Dougie Ross!).
2. "Clash of the Ash", from Runrig's 2007 album "Everything You See", is about which sport?

Answer: Shinty

Evolved in the highlands of Scotland, shinty is a fast and physically demanding field sport, played with a leather ball and curved sticks called camans. It is not unlike field hockey (but don't let a shinty player hear you say that!)
3. With which traditional song do Runrig close all their concerts? (In a ScotsCare poll in 1998, their version of this song was voted Scotland's greatest song).

Answer: Loch Lomond

Runrig have developed their up-tempo version of "Loch Lomond" over many years. As the curtain-closer, it attracts enormous crowd participation.
4. From which part of Canada does Bruce Guthro, Runrig's lead singer, originate?

Answer: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

There are strong links between Cape Breton Island and Scotland, since many thousands of Scots settled there after the Highland Clearances in the early part of the 19th century. Bruce joined Runrig in 1998, and has often pursued solo projects while still remaining active with the band.
5. Many of Runrig's songs are not in English. In which language do they also record? For example, "An Cuibhle Mor" ("The Big Wheel") is in this language.

Answer: Gaelic

Their first album "Play Gaelic", released in 1978, was all in Gaelic. At least a couple of tracks per album have been sung in Gaelic on later albums.
6. Complete the title of Runrig's 1987 album, their first big success: "The Cutter and the ___".

Answer: Clan

The album included as its final track "An Ubhal As Airde". The song was released as a single, and was the first Scottish Gaelic song to reach the UK Top Twenty (No 18 in 1997).
7. The original lead singer of Runrig, Donnie Munro, left the band in 1997 to pursue what career?

Answer: Politics

Donnie served as Rector of Edinburgh University from 1991 to 1994. In 1999, he stood as Labour Party parliamentary candidate for his home constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West. He lost narrowly to Liberal Democrat John Farquhar Munro.
8. One of Runrig's best known songs is entitled "Alba". What does Alba mean in English?

Answer: Scotland

The Scottish Football Association (that's soccer on the other side of the Atlantic) has been known to support the Celtic League in their campaign for wider recognition of Gaelic. They've done this by carrying the word 'Alba' on the back of the Scotland team's shirts.
9. Peter Wishart, the keyboard player for Runrig from 1986-2001, and later the Scottish National Party Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire, was previously in which other Scottish band?

Answer: Big Country

Peter Wishart is the first Member of Parliament to have appeared on the classic TV music programme "Top of the Pops". He was initially elected to Parliament at the 2001 general election. He later played in the unique parliamentary rock group, MP4.
10. Although huge in their native Scotland, Runrig are also very popular in which other European country where they tour regularly, playing venues such as Idraetshal in Odense, Tobakken in Esbjerg and Gigantium in Aalborg?

Answer: Denmark

Runrig have always had a huge following in Denmark, and an even bigger one in Germany, and they tour both countries almost every year. Since Bruce Guthro, from Nova Scotia, joined them as lead singer, they have also developed a fan base in Canada.
