Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My Sad Song number ten- Choose the song title that matches these lyrics. "I've never seen a night so long When time goes crawling by. The moon just went behind the clouds To hide its face and cry"

Answer: I'm so Lonesome I could Cry

Hank Williams wrote this song in 1949, with the intention that the lyrics be spoken, not sung.
Hank's troubled relationship with his wife, Audrey Sheppard, probably had a lot to do with this song's sad theme.
Many cover versions can be found, with the B.J. Thomas cover being the best-known.
2. Sad Song number nine- Which of the following contains these lyrics? "In the park I saw a daddy, With a laughin' little girl who he was swingin'. And I stopped beside a Sunday school, And listened to the song they were singin'. Then I headed back for home, And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'"

Answer: Sunday Morning Comin' Down

This song was written by Kris Kristofferson and was recorded first by Ray Stevens in 1969. Johnny Cash released his cover on his live album, "Johnny Cash Show".
Johnny's version climbed to number one on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart,
and was chosen by the Country Music Association as the 1970 Song of the Year.
I prefer the Kristofferson version, myself.
Some songwriters who perform their own songs, while not necessarily having the best voice, put more emotion into the song than most of the singers who cover it.
3. Sad Song number eight- Which pet dog are these lyrics referring to? "He came to my side and looked up at me And laid his old head on my knee I stroked the best friend a man ever had I cried so I scarcely could see"

Answer: Old Shep

"Old Shep" was written by Red Foley. It was inspired, he said, by a dog he owned as a child. Foley recorded it in 1935. He re-recorded it in 1941, and again in 1946.
Elvis Presley sang this song at age ten in a singing contest in 1935, at the Mississippi-Alabama State Fair. He was fifth, and won five dollars.

Mel Tillis (father of Pam Tillis) covered it in 1967. This version did much better, peaking at number eleven on the Billboard Hot Country Singles.
Ricky Van Shelton covered it on his debut album, "Wild-Eyed Dream" in 1987. It became Ricky's second number one hit single (Billboard Hot Country Singles)off that album.
5. Sad Song number six- Which title fits with these lyrics? "He said, "Listen to me, son, while you still can Run back home to that Southern land Don't you see what life here has done to me?" 7. Sad Song number four- Match the lyrics to the correct Prison song. "The warden led a prisoner down the hallway to his doom And I stood up to say goodbye like all the rest And I heard him tell the warden just before he reached my cell Let my guitar picking friend do my request"

Answer: Sing Me Back Home

Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home" was released as a single in 1967, off of his album of the same name, climbing to number one on the Hot Country Singles chart.

Merle tells us he wrote the song while in San Quentin State Prison, where he was serving three years for armed robbery.
The song was inspired by the execution of fellow inmate and friend whom he identifies only as Rabbit. Rabbit was condemned for his role in a botched escape plan during which a prison guard was killed.
8. Sad Song number three- Which song about the execution of an innocent man contained the following lyrics? "The judge said, 'Son, what is your alibi? If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die' I spoke not a word, though it meant my life For I had been in the arms of my best friend's wife"

Answer: Long Black Veil

This song, recorded by Lefty Frizzell in 1959, traces the fate of an innocent man's execution. Frizzell's recording made it to number six on the Hot Country Singles chart, and has been covered many times by many singers, including The Kingston Trio, Burl Ives, and Joan Baez.
The song's author says that the song was partially inspired by the mysterious black-veiled woman who visited Rudolph Valentino's grave every year.
9. Sad Song number two- These lyrics match which of the following Break-up tunes? "Lay your head upon my pillow Hold your warm and tender body Close to mine Hear the whisper of the raindrops Blowing soft against the window And make believe you love me One more time..."

Answer: For the Good Times

Kris Kristofferson took two years to get these simple, straight from the heart lyrics just right. He recorded a demo in 1970. 10. Sad Song number one- I can't even get through singing this one without choking up. Match the lyrics to the correct title. "He kept her picture on his wall Went half crazy now and then He still loved her through it all Hoping she'd come back again"

Answer: He Stopped Loving Her Today

This haunting tune was recorded in 1980 by George Jones, and became his first Hot 100 number one hit in over six years, and was probably a career-saver.
The song originally didn't have the last (spoken) verse, which was added at Jones' request by the songwriter, Curly Putnam..
"You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good"
One week after Jones' death in April, 2013, the tune was re-released and climbed to 21 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
