Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Crocodile Freedom" is the front part of one song and the back part of another song both sung by the same artist. Which spectacle wearing piano player would sing this "song"?

Answer: Elton John

Elton John recorded the single "Crocodile Rock" (1972) from the album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" (1973) and Philadelphia Freedom (1975). Both were number one hits, the latter being the first song Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote as a single. "Crocodile Rock" was inspired by John's discovery of Australian band Daddy Cool and their hit single "Eagle Rock" (1971). Elton John heard the song and the group on his 1972 Australian tour and was impressed by same.

The cover of "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" features a photo of John's lyricist Bernie Taupin wearing a "Daddy Who?" promotional badge.
2. "The Logical Way Home" is a mixture of two hits from the same album by this quirky British band. What is the name of the group?

Answer: Supertramp

"The Logical Song" (1978) and "The Long Way Home" (1979) were both singles from their "Breakfast in America" album (1979). This album had one of the most innovative covers of all time: It featured an assortment of breakfast items arranged to simulate a New York City skyline with a waitress holding a glass of juice aloft to mimic the Statue of Liberty.
3. A six piece band containing three Americans and three Brits sang a hybrid song called "Cold Blooded". What is the name of the group?

Answer: Foreigner

The two songs are :
"Cold as Ice" (1977) from their first Album "Foreigner" (1977).
"Hot Blooded" (1978) from their second Album "Double Vision" (1978).
Foreigner was a British-American rock band, originally formed in 1976 by veteran English musician Mick Jones and fellow Brit and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald when they met American vocalist Lou Gramm. There were three Americans and three Brits in the original band which informed their name: It didn't matter where they played at least half the band would be playing in a foreign country.
4. Which American band would sing a song with a mixed up title called, "Fly Like An Airliner"?

Answer: The Steve Miller Band

The two Songs are "Fly like an Eagle" (1976) from the album of the same name and year, and "Jet Airliner" (1978) from "Book of Dreams" (1977). This band is named after the lead singer and was originally a blues band before they became better known as a rock band. Pegasus, the flying horse was an emblem that featured regularly on album covers.
5. "Hotel in the Fast Lane" or should that be "Life in California" are mixed up titles from what 1970s supergroup?

Answer: The Eagles

The two songs are "Hotel California" (1977) and "Life in the Fast Lane" (1977), both off their biggest album "Hotel California" (1976) which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide.
The Eagles were so big in the '70s that every classic rock radio station appeared to have them on high rotation. There was a connection to Linda Ronstadt plus more than a bit of country in their music. At one stage they had four guitarists in their band.
6. Which English band sung "Sultans for Nothing", a combination of two of their most well known song titles?

Answer: Dire Straits

The songs are:
"Sultans of Swing" (1978), the first single from their debut album, "Dire Straits" (1978).
"Money for Nothing" (1982) from "Brothers in Arms" (1982), sold 30 million copies and stayed at number one on the Australian Recording Industry Association Album charts for thirty-six weeks.
Their first single caused a sensation with some unbelievable guitar work from Mark Knopfler and heavily sarcastic lyrics. "Money for Nothing" is a rarity, a song with a writing credit to a non-Dire Straits player. In this case it was Sting.
7. Three singers, three songwriters, three monster albums in the late '70s/early '80s sing "Tango Your Own Way"? What is the name of the five person group that would sing this combination song title?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The two songs were both written by Lindsay Buckingham: "Tango in the Night" (1987) the title track from "Tango in the Night" (1987) and "Go Your Own Way" (1977) from Rumours" (1977). "Rumours" was one off the biggest selling selling albums of all time selling 40 million copies. "Tango in the Night"(1987) was their second biggest selling album and came after the experimental "Tusk" (1980) (still huge) and the less commercially successful "Mirage" (1982).
8. What is the name of the Canadian band that sang (Maybe with a stutter?) "Taking Care of Nothing Yet". Can you figure out the name of the group from the fused song title?

Answer: Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Seventies group Bachman-Turner Overdrive were from Winnipeg, Manitoba. This group's catalog included five Top 40 albums and six Top 40 singles. There were two brothers in this band formerly known as Brave Belt. The hybrid song is a combination of two of their biggest Hits "Taking Care of Business" (1974) and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet (1974).
9. Violin, cello, french horn and clarinet were all common instruments played by members of the rock band that sang a hybrid song called "Evil Magic". What is the name of the band?

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

The two songs are:
"Evil Woman" and "Strange Magic". Both were singles from their 1975 album, "Face The Music".
ELO were formed to accommodate Roy Wood (who left after one album) and Jeff Lynne's desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical highlights.
The group's name is an intended pun based not only on electric light (as in a light bulb as seen on early album covers) but also using "electric" rock instruments combined with a small "light" orchestra. A logo was devised which looked like a Juke Box with the band initials within, appeared in some form of every album from 1976.
10. This band could be taken as the authority in rock music. What was the group that sang the combination song: "Message on the Moon"?

Answer: The Police

Both songs were from the Police's second album, "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979), which was a major seller throughout Europe. The album topped the British charts for four weeks and contained the UK number-one singles "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". The Police were an English rock band formed in England in 1977.

The band consisted of Sting (lead vocals, bass), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums). The Police became popular in the late 1970s after their breakthrough hit "Roxanne" was re-released in 1979, and are generally regarded as one of the first New Wave groups to achieve mainstream success, playing a style of rock that included influences from punk, reggae, and jazz.
11. An Australian band sang a song that contained two complete song titles: "Highway to Hell's Bells". What is the name of the band?

Answer: AC/DC

The two songs are a bit different to previous hybrids as there are two complete song titles in one hybrid: "Highway to Hell" (1979) from the album of the same name (Bon Scott's last) and "Hell's Bells" (1980) sung by Brian Johnson from "Back in Black" (1980). Ironically the latter album, was the band's biggest seller in the 20th century.

The title and later hit single was a reference to re-forming the band after Bon Scott's untimely death in 1979.
12. An American band with a big name sang "A Horse with Golden Hair" which was a fusion of two of their biggest hits. From the combination title can you work out the name of the band?

Answer: America

America is an American folk rock band that originally consisted of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek. The three members became a musical sensation during 1972, scoring No. 1 hits and winning a Grammy for best new musical artist. The hybrid song title of two Number 1 hits is from a group that almost defined soft rock in the 1970s: "Horse with No Name" (1971) and "Sister Golden Hair" (1974). George Martin featured as a producer on seven of their albums.

Other hits, amongst many, included "Ventura Highway" (1972) and "Lonely People" (1974). Seven out of their first eight albums started with the letter "H" including "History" (1975) which was a compilation of their hits to date.
13. An American band, big in Japan, sang "I Want You to Want My Love" which is a combination of two of their most popular songs. What is the name of the group?

Answer: Cheap Trick

This classic rock band described themselves as "Two freaks and two pretty boys". They had a string of hits, probably best known for a ballad, "The Flame" (1986). "I want you to want my love" is a hybrid of "I Want You to Want Me" (1978), a hit from "In Color" (1977) plus "If you Want My Love" (1981) from "One on One"(1981).
Cheap Trick have often been referred to in the Japanese press as the "American Beatles".
14. What is the name of the regal sounding band that had a fused hit called, "Fat Bottomed Champions"?

Answer: Queen

Queen were a British rock band formed in England in 1970, consisting of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). They were influenced originally by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into radio-friendly rock.

The band have released a total of 18 number one albums and 18 number one singles. Their album sales generally estimates range from 150 million to 300 million albums, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. Queen received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Phonographic Industry in 1990.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. The two songs were "Fat Bottomed Girls" from "Jazz" (1978) and "We are the Champions" from "News of the World" (1977)".
15. Bit tricky this one. The title is a combination of two songs from two different bands (at least the bands have a similar sound): "I'd Really Love to Lose That Number". What are the names of the two respective bands?

Answer: England Dan & John Ford Coley/Steely Dan

The songs are:
I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" by John Ford Coley & England Dan from the album "I Hear the Music" (1976)
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number" by Steely Dan from "Pretzel Logic" (1973).
Both these songs were the biggest hits for each respective band.
England Dan & John Ford Coley were an American soft rock duo composed of Danny Wayland "England Dan" Seals and John Edward "John Ford" Coley. From Texas, the duo released eleven albums and nine singles.
Steely Dan is an American rock band consisting of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The band released seven albums combining jazz, rock, funk, and pop. "Rolling Stone" magazine has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies".
