Silk Squads and Marching Bands Quiz

I'm afraid you won't have much luck with this quiz if you were not a band geek like me. Actually, I was a silk and am looking forward to instructing. If you were in Band (competitive especially), you'll be fine...sorry, it isn't for everyone.

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the basic marching step used by most marching bands called?

Answer: roll step

A beautiful thing when synchronized...good calf workout as well.
2. In marching band, what is the section of percussion that does NOT march commonly known as?

Answer: pit

I was sometimes envious of those people as I sweated it out on many a hot day at band camp...
3. Name one piece of equipment commonly used by the silk squad or color guard?

Answer: flag

My personal favorite was rifle as I was on the rifle line for several years and captain my senior year. Something about having a five pound piece of wood spinning somewhere overhead that was intriguing. Hard hat anyone?
4. In a field show, what is the intricate patterns called that the band forms while marching?

Answer: drill

Field shows were always so much fun and awesome to watch (when the group was good that is...).
5. In a field show, your particular location is typically determined by two things, name one of them.

Answer: hash marks

Especially when you are first learning the drill.
6. When a band is stationary and only their heels are moving, what is this known as?

Answer: marking time

Over the years, I thought that my whole life revolved around marking time. It is really silly if you think about it.
7. Name one aspect of a competitive field show that is judged for which an award is usually given?

Answer: woodwinds

Auxiliary (aka band front or silk squad) is also part of this mix. However, I was trying to make it easy instead of using the technical name.
8. When spinning a rifle, if you are doing a double toss, you release the toss on count 'one' and catch on what count?

Answer: 3

Something you learn quickly, especially when you are out of synch with the rest of the squad and nobody knows why...
9. What is Indoor Guard commonly known as?

Answer: Winter Guard

Although I loved field show, winter guard was definitely my favorite when I truly got to shine.
10. True or False: A high school football field and a college football field are marked and measured the same way.

Answer: False

The hash marks (field markings) on high school and college fields are spaced differently. This always screwed us up because we were used to competing on high school fields (we learned drill on high school fields). Everything got a bit spread out with everyone trying to meet their marks.
11. True or False. A TRUE competition band consists of many majorettes doing kickline routines throughout the show.

Answer: False

Majorettes belonged to football bands. For those of you who competed on a circuit, you know what I'm talking about and are probably cringing in your shoes. Football bands (aka Pep Bands) were never looked upon very well.
12. Silk squad routines always incorporate dance into their craft, name one of the three MOST COMMON types of dance used.

Answer: ballet

I loved all three, however, there were a few girls on my squad that I couldn't make graceful no matter how hard I tried. Imagine football players dancing the 'Nutcracker' in uniform.
13. Sometimes individual guard members do spotlight routines during indoor or field shows, what is this know as?

Answer: solo

I've had a couple of those...
14. True or False. It is illegal to insist upon guard members being roughly the same body build.

Answer: True

It is illegal, however, I've seen it done. Unfortunately, the poor girls probably didn't know that and didn't contest it.
15. True or False. It is legal to run over a judge that just happens to be in your way.

Answer: True

So funny, we delighted in making intricate drill formations and boxing a few of the more gung-ho judges in, they'd freak out. Rules say that the field is fair game and the show must go on...
16. If one of your marching band members falls during competition, what should you do?

Answer: march over them

Again, the show must go on...I've seen girls knock themselves out with a flag or weapon, get up with a bloody nose, and continue the show. I've also seen people fall during competition and just lay still while everyone marched over and around them.
17. In indoor guard (BOA, KIDA or TIDA rules), is it technically legal to have somebody in the show that does not twirl?

Answer: No

No, but I've seen that as well. The rules state that everyone must twirl I believe it is 3 minutes. Judges bend the rules though.
18. Here is a pretty universally named flag basic. The pole is first at attention, your top hand is flipped upside down, the move is done by rotating the flag in a swoop in front of you and then behind you, using the hand that was upside down. What is this basic called?

Answer: butterfly

That's the most universally named basic I know. Everyone calls things differently.
19. What is considered the elite circuit among silk squad indoor circuits?

Answer: WGI

Goody, goody, I get to work with a top 10 WGI group in July. Lucky me. P.S. It stands for Winter Guard(s) International.
20. In marching band, what position are your feet in while marching backwards QUICKLY?

Answer: on your toes

Another good calf workout...
