Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Firstly, a slightly tricky question to get the ball rolling: Who were the original band members of Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Answer: Michael Blazary, Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons

Hillel died from excessive drug use to Anthony's dismay. The two of them had a connection as they were both addicts at the time.

Anthony was one of the original band members and is still going strong. He was kicked out the band for a while as his drug problem was so big.

Michael Blazary-aka Flea-has always been in the Chili Peppers. At the birth of the RHCPs he was also in another band but decided to put all his efforts into this band (Thank God, the band wouldn't be the same without his strange ways).

John is on average six years younger than the rest of the band. He fits in well although on the 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' tour he pulled away from the band for a bit. John joined the band as the new guitarist after Hillel died. After the 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' tour John quit the band for a while, but re-joined ready to make the 'Californication' album.

Jack Sherman left the band when Hillel died, because he thought it would be an insult to his memory if they (the band and himself) continued to play music. In contrast to this the other band members decided to continue with the band as they thought that is what he wanted. Anthony wrote a tribute song for Hillel to show how he felt about the death. (Anthony also wrote a tribute song for River Phoenix who died in 1983 outside The Viper Room - a bar on Sunset Strip owned by Johnny Depp.)

At the drummer auditions that took place in 1989 the band decided to jam with each of the candidates. Hardly any of the drummers had the ability to rock hard enough or jam well. Chad Smith not only achieved this, but succeded in rocking harder than Flea-which is something that is almost impossible to do. Chad was perfect apart from his hair. The rest of the band decided he could join the band if he changed - met them the next day with a new hairstyle. Chad met them but still has the same hair. The band let him in as he had the guts to show up looking the same!

Jack Irons was in the audience at the Chili Peppers concert on 9/1 at The Forum...Anthony made a point of letting everyone know this... it was very cool. : )

Kurt Cobain was part of the band Nirvana until he died. Nirvana was a support act for the RHCPs on the last leg of the 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' tour.
2. For my next question: Anthony contracted which disease from his drug experimentation?

Answer: Hepatitis C

Anthony has never had cancer or liver failure (but has had a liver disease), although after the career changing tour for the 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' album he realised he had ear damage because of all the playing and noise! Poor guy.

Anthony gets rid of diseases in his bloodstream with ozone that 'pumps out' the bad bacteria, that is how he got rid of his Hepatitis C.

Extract from AK's autobiography: 'I'm taking ozone intravenously because somewhere along the line, i contracted hepititus C from my drug experimentation.'
3. Now for a lyric question: Which of these lyrics is in the song 'Otherside'?

Answer: Scarlet starlet and she's in my bed...

'Am I more than you bargained for...' is from the song 'Sugar, We're Going Down' by Fall Out Boy.

'Downtown another day for all the suits and ties...' is from the song 'We Believe' by Good Charlotte.

'Pay your surgeon very well...' is from the song 'Californication' by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The video for this song was based on a movie Flea saw at about five in the morning when on tour. The video challenged each of the band members in some ways as Anthony had to just stand and sing and not jump around like usual. Flea was precariously balanced on the top of "electrical" wires plucking them pretending to play his base. John had to play just one piece of rope pretending to play his guitar, he was not happy about this but he proceeded with it and liked the end result. Chad had to pretend to play the drums although he was in the middle of a rotating clock made just for the video.

The song 'Otherside' can be located on the 'Californication' album and on the 'Greatest Hits' CD and DVD video album.
4. Flea has dyed his hair blue at least once.

Answer: True

Flea had his hair dyed blue for the 'By The Way' era. You can see what he looks like with blue hair in the 'By The Way' video.
5. For which video did the band call all their close friends and family to dance round with them to keep within the budget set?

Answer: Higher Ground

'Under the Bridge' was filmed mostly in a studio, but they decided to shoot some on the streets of LA to grab the concept of the song being about LA. For 'The Zephyr Song' they auditioned many women in LA; they did not find anyone until the very end of the day when the "perfect" candidate came along!
6. How old was John and how old was Anthony when John joined the band?

Answer: John: 18 Anthony: 26

John to date is the youngest band member. On average he is eight years younger than the other band mates, however I am relieved and euphoric that he fits in and the age gap does not affect their friendship or playing!

For a brief spell John left the band as he was so tied up with drugs-mostly heroin- that he was so withdrawn and stressed that he couldn't cope so he left the band to sort himself out with no plans to re-join the band (but do not fear because he DID re-join the band!:)). He re-joined the band in time to make the 'Californication' album.
7. Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, John Frusciante and Michael Balzary wrote the song "Higher Ground".

Answer: False

Stevie Wonder wrote and sung "Higher Ground" originally. Most of the RHCP songs are written by the band members at the time of creation. An example of a song by Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, John Frusciante and Michael Balzary/Flea is 'Under the Bridge'.
8. In what year was the 'Californication' album released?

Answer: 1999

This album is what got the RHCPs really famous and the 'By The Way' album made them even more famous!
9. Another lyric question I think... Which song does this lyric come from: "Living in a citadel, it's hard enough to be yourself, waiting for the bell to toll in, I'm wide awake now!"?

Answer: Hump de Bump

'Hump de Bump' and 'C'mon Girl' are from the album 'Stadium Arcadium-Jupiter'. 'Can't Stop' is from the 'By The Way' album. 'Fight Like A Brave' is on the 'What Hits?!' album.
10. Finaly, which album is 'Throw Away Your Television' from?

Answer: By The Way

The 'By The Way' album also featured the tops hits 'By The Way', 'Can't Stop', 'Universally Speaking' and one of my personal favourites that was never released as a single was 'Dosed'.

The 'Californication' album also features top songs such as 'Otherside', 'Road Tripping' and 'Californication'.

The 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' album contained 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik', 'Suck My Kiss' and 'Give It Away'.
