quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was it that "...called to say you can make it ok..." in "The Ballad of John and Yoko"?

Answer: Peter Brown

The trials and tribulations of getting a wedding together as described by Lennon, taking us on these trips halfway around Europe. It was Peter Brown who suggested that he and Yoko could get married in Gibraltar. "The Ballad of John and Yoko" was banned in several countries, because there was a fuss in some quarters about the word "Christ", the first word of the chorus.
2. What did Traffic say they were going round, in their first major hit?

Answer: The Mulberry Bush

This was the first hit for this relatively short-lived, but excellent band that was formed by Stevie Winwood after he left the Spencer Davis Group. "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" was the theme song of the film of the same name. A really hilarious movie about adolescence and "The First Time".

They had another hit with "Hole In My Shoe", a rather psychedelic offering, but nonetheless a good song.
3. This singer was the first foreign artist to make it into the top ten of the British charts with a song in his/her own language (which was definitely not English).

Answer: Kyu Sakamoto

Kyo Sakamoto made it to number six in the British Charts in 1963 with a song called "Sukiyaki", which was sung in Japanese.
4. Dan McCaffery is what kind of musician?

Answer: Singer

Dan McCaffery has been the singer for Nazareth for about 40 years now. A very distinctive voice, of which one would not think that he can reach the pitches that he does.
5. Staying on the subject... where are Nazareth from?

Answer: Scotland

One of the best musical formations to come out of Scotland.
6. What is the name of the band who had a female singer with an irritatingly squawky voice and a big hit with a song that was about missing parents with vocalisation of bird and chicken sounds?

Answer: Middle Of The Road

They had a big hit in the UK and some other European countries with "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep". To add to the irritation of the singer's voice, the drummer wore an embarrassingly obvious toupet. They had a few hits more and then, thankfully, wandered into oblivion.
7. Which two politicians (and ex prime ministers) does George Harrison mention in "Taxman"?

Answer: Wilson and Heath

This was George's lament about the high rate of tax the Beatles and others in a similar financial position as they had to pay. The Beatles paid up to 98% tax on their income. Crazy!
8. Who is Harry Webb?

Answer: Cliff Richard

Harry Webb would have done it just the same.
9. He is French, was closely associated with Edith Piaf, he is an actor as well as a singer and writer, he had a huge hit in the UK (and elsewhere) with "She".

Answer: Charles Aznavour

Charles Aznavour is one of the most prolific writers and singers of mainly chansons. He was a protege of Edith Piaf, who mentored him, because she recognised his talents. He burst onto the UK scene with "She", which he was commissioned to write for the British TV series of the same name.
10. Who lies buried in Paris?

Answer: Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison, singer of the Doors, like a good few of his compatriots, died before his time. His grave in a Paris cemetary is much visited to this day.
11. He was a brilliant guitarist and songwriter, played in a chart-topping band in the late Sixties and early Seventies. Then, he apparently lost his mind along the way, gave away his fortune, went to work as a gravedigger and eventually went into total reclusion.

Answer: Peter Green

Peter Green was the creative part of early Fleetwood Mac. Classics such as "Albatross" and "Man of the World" were among the great works of his. What a waste!
12. This musical genius formed Move, Wizzard and ELO and thereafter also embarked on a successful solo career.

Answer: Roy Wood

I would recommend the album "Boulders", which is a solo work by Roy Wood. On it, he plays every instrument heard on the album (and there are a lot).
13. Phil Lynott was singer for which band?

Answer: Thin Lizzy

Another one that died too soon, on 4 January 1986, at the age of 34. Good voice, loads of talent... wasted.
14. At the first Beatles recording session, when asked by George Martin, after he had explained the procedures, if there was anything they did not like, what did George Harrison say?

Answer: I don't like your tie, for a start.

This remark, instead of his being insulted by it, endeared the Beatles all the more to George Martin. He would often relate this episode and go on to say how much he was taken just by the humour of the Fab Four.
15. Who is Vince Furnier?

Answer: Alice Cooper

I guess it takes a little stroke of genius to come up with a name like Alice Cooper for that kind of setup.
16. How old was Eddie Cochran when he died?

Answer: 21

Why do the good guys always go missing so soon? One has to imagine all the good stuff Eddie could have given us if he had lived.
17. Noddy Holder was, at the time, the loudest voice in pop. But which band did he sing for?

Answer: Slade

I had the pleasure of meeting Slade and Noddy Holder (now MBE) back in 1980 when they came to my restaurant to eat. Wonderful bunch of lads and nothing like the aggressive image they put over from time to time.
18. Who always wanted to be a professional footballer, even had a trial with a club, but in the event became a singer instead (which, in retrospect, was the far better choice).

Answer: Rod Stewart

Roddy had a trial with Brentford F.C., a club of the lower divisions. Guess he didn't make it, which was better for him and us, I would say.
19. He wrote and sang about "A Well-Respected Man" and "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and many more songs whose lyrics were always very close to real life and at times satirically funny. Who is he and what was the name of his band?

Answer: Ray Davies - Kinks

It pays to listen to the lyrics written by Ray Davis. Just one example of life on the strange and funny side is "Lola". Another one that the Sixties Generation can truly identify with is "Come Dancing". There are so many, I don't have enough space. For those who haven't had the pleasure, get out there and get some Kinks albums. You won't regret!
20. The Kinks' line-up includes a pair of brothers. One is Ray Davies. What is the name of his brother?

Answer: Dave Davies

Ray and Dave Davies do not have a good relationship on stage. How they ever managed to play together, I will never know. Quite frequently, they would even exchange blows on stage in concert. Oboy!
