Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following songs, which won the Best Metal Performance Grammy award?

Answer: Eyes of the Insane

The song "Eyes of the Insane" appeared on the "Christ Illusion" album released on August 8, 2006 in the US. This album featured the original band line up for the first time since the 1990 album "Seasons in the Abyss". The song "Eyes of the Insane" is a unique view of war from a tormented soldier experiencing flashbacks of his time on the battlefield.
2. Slayer has a great song titled "Chemical Warfare" released on their 1984 EP "Haunting the Chapel". Which punk rock band also had a song titled "Chemical Warfare"?

Answer: Dead Kennedys

The Dead Kennedys' song preceded Slayer's by four years, being released on the album "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables". The Dead Kennedys' version is one of their darker songs lyrically. Lead singer Jello Biafra describes how he steals a container of mustard gas from a military facility and drops it on a country club full of the privileged.
3. What was Slayer's first gold album, indicating 500,000 units in sales?

Answer: Reign in Blood

Sales of this album were based strictly on concert touring and word of mouth. The album received no airplay on the radio, no promotion from the label and certainly no video airplay on MTV or other video markets. One tie in to more commercial music was the album's producer, Rick Rubin.
4. When Dave Lombardo first left the band in 1986, who was he replaced by?

Answer: Tony Scaglione

Scaglione was a member of the New Jersey thrash act Whiplash. He never was a great fit at drummer for Slayer, so Lombardo came back into the mix.
Charlie Benante was the legendary drummer from Anthrax.
Paul Mazurkiewicz is best known as the drummer for Cannibal Corpse and Kirk Arrington was the drummer for the Seattle based Metal Church.
5. Which serial killer was the song "Dead Skin Mask" written about?

Answer: Ed Gein

Ed Gein was found with a vest made of skin and was known to remove his victim's faces and wear them as a mask. Gein was used as the model for Buffalo Bill in the movie "Silence of the Lambs". Many other bands have used Ed Gein as musical inspiration including Mudvayne and Blind Melon.
6. With which rapper did Slayer perform the song "Disorder"?

Answer: Ice-T

This song was released on the soundtrack for the movie "Judgment Night". This soundtrack paired a hard rock group with a rapper, or rap group. Other examples include the pairing of Helmet and House of Pain, Living Colour and Run DMC, Biohazard and Onyx, Mudhoney and Sir Mix-A-Lot and even Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill.
7. Which Slayer album was a collection of punk rock cover songs?

Answer: Undisputed Attitude

Slayer was based out of Huntington Beach, CA, so their punk roots were obvious. Slayer has made no bones about the respect they had for early punk acts, it was the music they grew up listening to. Artists covered on this album included: The Stooges, T.S.O.L. and Minor Threat. Since this album occurred during a period when Dave Lombardo was not in the band, Paul Bostaph (from the band Forbidden) filled in on drums for this recording.
8. Which member of Slayer helped out the band Megadeth during a 1983 tour due to the band's personnel problems?

Answer: Kerry King

In 1983, Megadeth was having difficulty keeping a guitarist in place for shows, so Kerry stepped in to lend a hand for a handful of shows. Here's an interesting tidbit for the true Kerry King fan, he has dabbled in the breeding of show dogs during the course of his music career.
9. Which member of Slayer has a morbid obsession with serial killers?

Answer: Tom Araya

It's interesting to see Tom in interviews because of his constant goofing off and joking around, a character in stark contrast to his on stage persona. Tom was born in Chile. Here's some trivia about Tom, before Slayer, he was in school to be a respiratory therapist.
10. Which two fellow metal musicians appeared in their 2003 DVD release "Slayer: War at the Warfield"?

Answer: Scott Ian and Kirk Hammett

Scott Ian and Kirk Hammett were on hand to lend praise to the band during their concert at The Warfield in San Francisco. The only negative thing about this video is that Paul Bostaph was on the drum kit instead of Dave Lombardo. The video also includes a nice segment featuring some of the fans of Slayer which was a nice touch.
