Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Coming in at #30 on the list is the 1977 Top 10 single, "Lonely Boy." What musician, also known for his single, "Thank You for Being A Friend," recorded this song?

Answer: Andrew Gold

Andrew Gold came from a very musical family. His mother, Marni Nixon, was the dubbed singing voice for Natalie Wood's Maria in "West Side Story," Audrey Hepburn's Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady", and Deborah Kerr's Anna in "The King and I." His father was Ernest Gold, the Academy Award-winning composer who wrote nearly 100 film and television scores.
Gold's "Thank You for Being A Friend" was the theme song for the television show "The Golden Girls," and he sang the theme song for "Mad About You."
2. This song by Debby Boone was the biggest hit of the 70's, topping the US charts for 10 weeks in 1977,and receiving an Academy Award for "Best Original Song" that same year. What is the #29 song on VH1's list?

Answer: You Light Up My Life

"You Light Up My Life" was from the movie of the same name, and was written by Joe Brooks. It has been covered by many artists over the years, including Whitney Houston, Bianca Ryan, and Westlife. Debby, of course, is the daughter of "Mr. Clean-cut', Pat Boone.
3. The #28 song on the countdown list has often been ridiculed for its strange, almost moronic lyrics, including "The heat was hot," and "There were plants and birds and rocks and things..." What was this first single by America?

Answer: A Horse with No Name

"A Horse with No Name" was actually banned in several locations because of supposed drug references, since "horse" is a slang term for heroine. Despite that, it quickly rose to #1 in the US and #3 in the UK. I remember it as one of my least favorite songs during high school.
4. Although some of his other songs were more well-known, this Grammy Award-winning R&B and soul singer hits #27 on the list with "Hello." Who is he?

Answer: Lionel Richie

Richie started as lead for the Commodores in the 1970's, and left them to hit his peak in the 80's as a solo artist. His song-writing has won him an Academy Award for "Say You, Say Me," and he has written songs for many other artists.
The video for "Hello" is actually more famous than the actual song, having been parodied several times.
5. Harry Chapin was killed in a car accident at age 38, but only after seeing success with this #1 hit. What song, based on a poem by his wife and #26 on VH1's list, talks about Chapin's life on the road and lack of time spent with his family?

Answer: Cat's in the Cradle

"Cat's in the Cradle" was Chapin's only #1 hit, but it made him a millionaire. It has been covered by many, parodied by others, and used in numerous television shows and movies, including "Shrek the Third."
6. #25 on the "Softsational" list headed up the pop charts, and was also a top ten country single. What 1978 song by Canadian Anne Murray made her the first Canadian female singer to reach #1 on the US charts?

Answer: You Needed Me

Anne Murray has won four Grammy and three CMA awards, and is still recording today.
7. What song by Phil Collins sits at #24 on our list, and repeats the words of the title numerous times in the lyrics? Pick the best answer.

Answer: One More Night

Collins still performs "One More Night" regularly in his live performances. It was his second #1 US single.
8. What soft-rock hit list could be complete without "Can't Fight This Feelin'?" Can you name the band who sang it, named for a truck that one of its members learned about in a college class about the history of transportation?

Answer: REO Speedwagon

"Can't Fight This Feelin'" has appeared on dozens of compiliation albums, and on several of REO Speedwagon's greatest hits albums.
9. "Tonight I Celebrate My Love" comes in at #22 on VH1's list. This beautiful love song was sung by what male/female duet?

Answer: Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson

Bryson and Flack recorded several other songs together, but "Tonight I Celebrate My Love" remains the most popular of them.
10. This band named after a city came up with the song "Still the One," and made it to #20 on the "Softsational" list?

Answer: Orleans

I think I first heard "Still the One" when ABC used it in a promotional campaign in 1977. In 2004, the Bush campaign used it at campaign events until Orleans co-founder (and Bush critic) John Hall found out and commented to the media that permission had never been received. The campaign ended their playing of the song, and Democrat Hall was elected to Congress in the fall of 2006.
