Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song was first recorded by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963, but it was a version by Linda Ronstadt that topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975, making it her first and only number one. What's the title of this tune?

Answer: You're No Good

Dee Dee Warwick's version failed to reach the top 100 on the Billboard pop chart, but a cover by Betty Everett, also from 1963, fared much better, reaching number 51. "You're No Good" was the first single released from Linda Ronstadt's 1974 LP "Heart Like a Wheel", and reached the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 in February of 1975.

The second single from the album, "When Will I Be Loved", looked like it would become her second number one, but it was unable to overcome the year's biggest hit "Love Will Keep Us Together", and stalled at number two.
2. By 1975 10cc already had a number of hits in the UK, but little success elsewhere. What's the name of the hit song that changed this and brought the band worldwide fame?

Answer: I'm Not in Love

Written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, "I'm Not in Love" was 10cc's biggest hit in the US, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in July of 1975. It was the second of three songs the group would place atop the UK Singles Chart, while also reaching number one in Ireland and Canada.

Although the band enjoyed great success in the UK during their career, scoring eleven top ten hits, they couldn't sustain their popularity in the US. Their 1977 hit "The Things We Do for Love" was 10cc's second and final single to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number five.
3. This beautiful tune by the Eagles became the band's first number one, topping both the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts. Would you please name this song?

Answer: Best of My Love

"Best of My Love" was included on the Eagles' 1974 studio album "On the Border", which became the band's most successful LP up to that point, reaching number 17 on the Billboard 200 album chart. At the time the group, and in particular Glenn Frey, were ready to show their rock and roll side, so the first two singles from the album were the faster paced "Already Gone" and "James Dean". Neither song did particularly well, but the album cut of "Best of My Love" was starting to receive airplay, so the band's label, Asylum Records, decided to release it as a single. Prior to its release and unbeknownst to the Eagles, Asylum decided to shorten the song by more than one minute to make it more radio friendly, which infuriated the band, but in the end it proved to be a wise choice.
4. What's the title of the U.S. top five hit by the pop trio America, that begins with this somewhat gloomy line? "Well I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed"?

Answer: Sister Golden Hair

"Sister Golden Hair", which was written by band member Gerry Beckley, would become America's second and final number one on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the chart for one week in June of 1975. According to Beckley, the melody for the tune was heavily influenced by former Beatle George Harrison.

In an interview with Songfacts he said: "I very openly tip my hat there to 'My Sweet Lord.' I was such a fan of all The Beatles, but we knew George quite well and I just thought that was such a wonderful intro." The single was produced by George Martin, making it his 20th number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and his first chart topper not involving The Beatles.
5. A live version of this tune became a monster hit for John Denver in the spring of 1975, topping both the Billboard Hot 100 and Country charts. Which song is it?

Answer: Thank God I'm a Country Boy

"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" was written by John Martin Sommers and recorded by John Denver as an album cut for his 1974 LP "Back Home Again". The hit version was recorded during a concert at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles; it was included on his 1975 live album "An Evening with John Denver", and released as a single in March of that year.

This was the first time Denver had a single top both the U.S. Pop and Country charts, but it wouldn't be his last, since his very next single release, "I'm Sorry", accomplished the exact same feat.
6. Which well-known singer and composer provided backing vocals on Neil Sedaka's 1975 smash hit "Bad Blood"?

Answer: Elton John

Elton John did sing backup on the single, but his performance went uncredited. "Bad Blood" was part of a major comeback for Neil Sedaka that began in late 1974 with the release of "Laughter in the Rain", which became his first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1962.

He also co-wrote "Love Will Keep Us Together" which was the biggest selling single of 1975, and to top it all off "Bad Blood" became his second number one of the year, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 1975.

After three weeks at number one "Bad Blood" was knocked out of the top spot by Elton John's "Island Girl".
7. Although this song by Ringo Starr only managed to reach number three on the Billboard Hot 100, that's still nothing to "sneeze" at. With that in mind, do you remember the name of this amusing tune?

Answer: No No Song

"No No Song", written by Hoyt Axton and David Jackson, was the second single released from Ringo Starr's fourth studio album "Goodnight Vienna". Fearing the song might receive limited airplay due to its drug references, it was released in the U.S. as a double A-side along with "Snookeroo", a song written specifically for Ringo by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

As it turned out this didn't hurt "No No Song" at all, since it went on to become Ringo's seventh top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number three in April of 1975.
8. Which of the following bands had a big hit in 1975 with the song "How Long"? If you play your cards right this one should be easy.

Answer: Ace

Although Ace was together for five years, "How Long" was the band's only single to crack the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number three in May of 1975. The song was written by keyboardist and lead vocalist Paul Carrack and contrary to popular belief, was not about a two-timing lover.

In fact, Carrack was inspired to write the tune after finding out that the band's bass player, Terry Comer, was secretly working with another group. Even though Ace felt slightly betrayed by Comer, he was still allowed to play on the hit single.
9. "Lovin' You" was one of the biggest hits of 1975, and was also the perfect song to showcase this young lady's incredible vocal range. What's the name of this artist?

Answer: Minnie Riperton

"Lovin' You" was composed by Minnie Riperton and her husband Richard Rudolph and was included on her second studio album "Perfect Angel". The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for one week in April of 1975, and was an international hit as well, reaching the top ten in the UK, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. Riperton's vocal range spanned an amazing five octaves, and she possessed the unique ability to sing in the whistle register, which is the highest register of the human voice. On the album version of the tune, Riperton repeatedly sings the name Maya towards the end of the song as a tribute to her young daughter Maya Rudolph, who would go on to become a very successful comedian and actress.

Although "Lovin' You" was her only hit on the Hot 100, she continued to have moderate success on the Billboard R&B charts. Sadly, Minnie Riperton passed away from breast cancer in July of 1979; she was only 31 years old.
10. Which Elton John and Bernie Taupin composition was dedicated to John's close friend Billie Jean King?

Answer: Philadelphia Freedom

Elton John and Billie Jean King first met in 1973 and built a friendship that is still going strong today. In 1974 King was the player-coach of the Philadelphia Freedoms of the newly founded World Team Tennis league, so John, who had admired King even before they met, decided to honor his friend and asked Taupin if he could write lyrics for a song he wanted to call "Philadelphia Freedom".

Although the song isn't specifically about King, John has stated in numerous interviews that she was the inspiration behind it. "Philadelphia Freedom" was one of Elton John's biggest hits, spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and ended the year as the third biggest selling single of 1975.
