Writers Buddy Holly and Jerry Allison got the idea for the song after going to see the movie "The Searchers" starring John Wayne. "That'll Be the Day" was a common catchphrase used by Wayne. On a side note, the song was the first song recorded by The Quarrymen,(later to become The Beatles), as a demo disc.

When The Diamonds recorded the song, they had 15 minutes left on their studio rental. Someone brought in a demo of the song and the group practiced and recorded the song, but because some of the members had already left, there isn't a drummer playing on the original recording.
