Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, what is Sweet Adelines?

Answer: women's barbershop organization.

Sweet Adelines is a women's barbershop organization for women all over the world. It started in 1945, when a few women got together since they wanted to do what men were doing. And now, Sweet Adelines has taken off and, in my opinion, is even better than the men.
2. What are the parts in Sweet Adelines?

Answer: tenor, lead, baritone, bass

The parts in Sweet Adelines are the same as guys' barbershop... which leads to interesting mixups! Tenor is the highest, and then it just goes down.
3. Who sings the melody in the songs?

Answer: lead

The reason this seems confusing, and different from classical music, is that the lead is lower than the tenor. In barbershop, there is a harmony part higher than the melody--the tenor.
4. What is the motto of Sweet Adelines?

Answer: Harmonize the World

There's a song called "Harmonize the World" that Sweet Adelines sings. And they're succeeding--there are choruses all over the world, including Australia, Canada, and Finland!
5. Where was barbershop first created?

Answer: United States

Barbershop is completely, totally, uniquely American.
6. What is the audition song you must learn before you can join Sweet Adelines?

Answer: It can be any song

Once you learn it and sing it, you can be in Sweet Adelines! (Well, once you fill out the application, pay up, etc., etc.)
7. Which quartet won at International Competition in 2006? Remember--quartet, not chorus.

Answer: SALT

SALT is a quartet from Sweden. Annika Andersson sings lead, Anna Öhman sings tenor, Susanna Berndts sings bass, and Anna-Stina Gerdin sings baritone.
8. What chorus won at International Competition in 2006? Remember--now it's the chorus, not the quartet!

Answer: Rich-Tone

Rich-Tone is a chorus from Farmers Branch, Texas, and the director is Dale Syverson. There's 119 women in the chorus, and it's growing all the time.
9. What is the name of the membership campaign Sweet Adelines is using in 2006?

Answer: Divas Wanted!

Divas Wanted! is geared toward attracting more members to Sweet Adelines, since we keep losing members.
10. And finally, what is Sweet Adelines's brother barbershop society?

Answer: Barbershop Harmony Society

It started out as the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, otherwise known as the guys' barbershop society. SAI is Sweet Adelines International.
