Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shirley Bassey is the only singer to have sung three James Bond theme songs. One of those theme songs which she sang was from a film released in 1964 and was the third to star Sean Connery - which one was it?

Answer: Goldfinger

Shirley was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2000 to go with the many and varied awards which she has received. Her first single hits were in the late 50s and were most numerous between then and the mid 60s, however, her album output has been substantial and she is almost never out of the album charts. "As I Love You" was her first number one in 1959 and she had another with "Reach for the Stars/Climb Every Mountain" in 1961.

In addition she had a number one in the dance charts with "History Repeating" in 1997.

In 2007 she celebrated 50 years since her first chart entry {Banana Boat Song"] by entering the chart again with "The Living Tree". Her recording of the Newley/Bricusse song "Goldfinger" was inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.

She is in as much demand as ever and has headlined at Glastonbury and performed on the BBC Electric Proms in recent years.
2. Not much more than a one-hit wonder this singer is best remembered as "Bobby's Girl". Who is she?

Answer: Susan Maughan

Susan had a big hit in 1962 with "Bobby's Girl" but could only add two more very minor hits to it in the following year. She began her career as a band singer, notably with Ray Ellington. Following her hit she was in a film called "What a Crazy World" with other pop singers of the era, did a season at The London Palladium with Frank Ifield and was in The Royal Command Performance that featured The Beatles for the first time.

She obtained further work on TV and the West End into the 70s and has been a regular member of 60s revival shows since. I saw her in the early 80s supporting Showaddywaddy and she was excellent in singing her own hit plus other 60s hits by female artistes too.

She last issued an album in 2007.
3. Although not just a one hit wonder Julie Rogers did have one particularly massive hit in 1964 which was internationally successful. What was the name of this hit?

Answer: The Wedding

Julie was a band singer when she signed a recording contract in 1964. She hit the jackpot with "The Wedding" despite it having been successful by Anita Bryant and Malcolm Vaughan in 1961. Her version was a global hit and by 1972 it is estimated it had sold seven million copies. Julie had two further hits in 1965, "Like a Child" and "The Hawiian Wedding Song", and spent several decades touring internationally on the strength of them.

Her most recent release was an album called "Sing Another Song" in 2003.
4. This singer had a big hit with "Terry", on the back of the fashion for teenage tragedy songs. What totally inappropriate name, considering the song content, was she known by?

Answer: Twinkle

Following songs like "Ebony Eyes" By The Everly Brothers and "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las Twinkle's story of teenage loss was another motorbike accident, after a lover's tiff. It was banned by the BBC on grounds of taste, which probably boosted its popularity and it reached number 4 in 1964. Twinkle had another minor hit with "Golden Lights" which was written by Dec Cluskey of The Bachelors (her boyfriend at the time) and covered by The Smiths in the 80s.

She carried on performing into the 80s, sometimes as Twinkle Ripley.

She is the aunt of well-known actress Fay Ripley and also went to the same school as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
5. Jackie Trent scored a number one in 1965 with "Where Are You Now, My Love?" written by her soon-to-be husband. He was a less than popular judge on "New Faces" in the 70s as well as a composer - who is he?

Answer: Tony Hatch

Jackie's number one was featured on a TV show called "It's Dark Outside" and although she recorded further singles and albums her main success was as a lyricist in partnership with Tony Hatch, who she married in 1967. He was in collaboration with Petula Clark when they met and wrote the international hit "Downtown".

The Hatch/Trent parnership produced many songs for other artists of international standing too and in the 70s wrote two stage musicals, one of which was "The Card" which reached the West End.

They travelled around a bit and had spells of TV work in Ireland and moved to Australia in 1982. During their time in Australia they wrote possibly their most played song - the theme tune for TV soap "Neighbours". After their separation Jackie came out of retirement to tour in a musical in Britain and then perform some concerts in Australia.

She released an album called "Trentquility" in 2009.
6. This singer was nicknamed "Foghorn" at school for the deepness of her voice but she had the last laugh and went "Walking Back to Happiness" by achieving two number ones at the age of 14 years and had 12 chart entries between 1961 and 1964. Who is she?

Answer: Helen Shapiro

Helen is the youngest female singer to have a number one in the UK and before she was 16 she was voted Britain's top female singer and had toured with The Beatles. Sadly, it was probably the era started by them which led to a downturn in her chart successes after 1964 and the coming of the groups. Due to her superb voice she was able to branch out into musicals and her first love, jazz singing.

She played Nancy in "Oliver" in the West End and was a regular in the soap opera "Albion Market" on TV until its demise in 1986.

In the latter part of her career she incorporated gospel singing into her repertoire. She did a farewell concert tour in 2002 in order to spend more time on her gospel outreach evenings. I saw one of her last concerts in Canterbury and her distinctive voice was better than ever!
7. Kathy Kirby had her biggest hit in 1963 with the song "Secret Love" which climbed to number 4 in the charts. Which film did it come from?

Answer: Calamity Jane

Kathy was a real force in the charts between 1963 and 1965 with 5 entries and was voted Top British Female Singer in the NME Poll of 1963. Bert Ambrose was her manager and mentor through her successful period after she had begun her career singing with his band in 1956.

She appeared in the Royal Command Performance, had three BBC TV series and represented UK in the Eurovision song contest of 1965, in which she came second. After her initial success she still appeared on TV during the 70s and made recordings but due to her poor health she retired from showbusiness in 1983 and has only had spasmodic contacts with it since.

The song "Secret Love" had previously been a number one for Doris Day in the Billboard charts of 1954.
8. Marianne Faithfull's first chart entry was with "As Tears Go By" in 1964. Which duo penned this song for her?

Answer: Jagger/Richards

Marianne had five top 40 chart entries in 1964/65 but her musical success since then has been limited to albums, of which there has been a steady stream other than a period in the 70s when she had health problems. Her association with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones has been well-documented and needs no repeating. Since 1979 she has involved herself in a wide range of different musical genre and released her latest album in 2008.

She has had a successful acting career running parallel to the music and appeared on stage, screen and TV. Work has included the film "Girl on a Motorcycle" (1968), Shakespeare and Chekhov on stage and two appearances on TV in "Absolutely Fabulous". Quite a range!
9. Anita Harris had her first hit in 1967 with "Just Loving You" which reached number six. She began her career though in a choral group which sang "Sing Something Simple" on BBC radio every week. What is the name of the choir?

Answer: Cliff Adams Singers

How many of you listened to "Sing Something Simple" with dread as its dreary tones reminded you the weekend was coming to a close? Tom Springfield, Dusty's brother, wrote "Just Loving You" which was Anita's highest chart entry and which sold 2 million copies.

Although her further chart success was limited, as an ex-ice dancer and Bluebell girl, she followed the route of all-round entertainer and her talent and stunning looks kept her much in demand. She soon starred in the West End and in two "Carry On" films.

She has been in Seven Royal Command Performances and was also in "Cats" in the West End for two years. She was a highly paid cabaret performer by the mid 80s but she and her husband had a massive financial setback in 1985 through fraudulent (Not by themselves!) dealings at a Swiss bank where they had invested. Nevertheless, she carried on working throughout health and financial problems, although money issues have raised their ugly heads again in more recent times too.
10. Despite having 15 chart entries during the 60s Dusty Springfield had only a single number one in 1966. Which of her hits was it?

Answer: You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

Dusty had her first hits with her brother in their group The Springfields. When you include the 5 hits she had with them and add her own output she was in the charts either here or in the States in very year of the decade, save 1960. She had a run of minor hits in the 80s and 90s with a number of collaborations with other artists - the most successful being "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" which reached number 2 in 1987, recorded with the Pet Shop Boys.

She has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Hall of Fame, she appeared at number 35 in the Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, she was voted the Best Female Artist four times in the annual NME poll in the 60s as well as Best British Singer 1964-66.

He album "Dusty in Memphis" has been voted as one of the best albums of all time in several polls and in 2001 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Sadly, she died prematurely in 1999 on the day she was to collect an OBE from the Queen.

Her manager took it to her in hospital. At her induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 10 days after her death Elton John said "She is the greatest white singer there has ever been". I can't add any more to that.
