Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tea for Two" was written for which 1925 musical comedy, set in Atlantic City?

Answer: No, No, Nanette

"No, No, Nanette" was originally a play, "My Lady Friends" written by Frank Mandel. This was followed by a book and then the musical.

It is the story of three couples staying in a country retreat, misunderstandings, confusion and love.
2. "Tea for Two" is sung as a duet by which two characters?

Answer: Tom and Nanette

Nanette is the ward of Jimmy Smith, a philanthropic millionaire. Tom is his nephew and assistant who has fallen for Nanette.

"No, No Nanette" is really Jimmy Smith's story. He cannot resist helping people, despite his wife's disapproval. Unfortunately his good deeds come back to bite him and causes much confusion.
3. In "Tea for Two", the girl wants to get married straight away, but the boy wants to wait.

Answer: False

It is the opposite way round! Our young lady is having way too much fun to want to settle down just yet, but her young man has made up his mind and does not want to wait. He plucks up his courage on the rare occasion that he manages to get her to himself and takes his chance.
4. In "Tea for Two", where does the young man suggest that the young lady picture herself?

Answer: Upon my knee

"Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you - Alone!"

The young man is trying to sell his vision of an ideal future to the young lady. The word "Alone" is his yearning for an exclusive relationship.
5. What goes in the space in the following lyric from "Tea for Two"? "I'm discontented with _________ that I've rented"

Answer: Homes

"I'm discontented with homes that I've rented
So I have invented my own."

So go the lyrics of the song. I too have an ideal home in mind and have the plans filed away for some future date.
6. What goes in the space in the following lyric from "Tea for Two"? "We won't have it known, dear, That we own a _________"

Answer: Telephone

Our young man clearly wants to spend his time snuggled up and wants no visitors at all. Having a telephone is a good idea, but not if all your friends and family have the number. You had better keep the address to yourself too.
7. It takes a while, but the young lady eventually catches on! What confectionery item does the young lady in "Tea for Two" propose to make?

Answer: A sugar cake

"Day will break and I'll wake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For you to take for all the boys to see"

Researching recipes I found two different types of "sugar cake". One is a light and fluffy sponge using just the whites of eggs and the other is a sugar and coconut cookie.
8. Two voices with one thought come next in "Tea for Two". What does our couple intend raising?

Answer: A family

Is our young lady just playing along and getting into the swing of things, or does she really want to settle down and raise a family? By the end of "No, No Nanette", all is well but at this stage, she still needs some convincing.

When I was pregnant with my first child and people asked what I wanted, I always replied, "Kittens!"
9. In "Tea for Two" what does the young man promise as the final clincher?

Answer: A boy for you

"A boy for you and a girl for me". By this stage he seems to understand that she likes the boys best. He wants to be her number one boy, but offers a baby boy too to tempt her!
10. What goes in the space in the final line from "Tea for Two"? "Can't you see how _____ we would be."

Answer: Happy

"Can't you see how happy we would be."

Our young lovers sing the final line together. It is a foretaste of their future, but this song comes in Act Two and there is the third act to come. There is a happy ending for all three couples, once they get through all of the confusion.
