Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1977, Dolly Parton broke our hearts with a tune featuring "little Andy". Who was little Andy?

Answer: a puppy

Long-time country music favorite, Ms. Parton "crossed over" with her 1977 LP "Here You Come Again". It reached number 20 on the Billboard Pop Charts. On the LP is the classic "Me and Little Andy", a tune about an abandoned little girl and her puppy. It's a tear-jerking masterpiece.
2. In 1964 England's Chad and Jeremy scored their only Top Ten U.S. hit with a wistful song of lost love. What was the name of this melancholy tune?

Answer: A Summer Song

Overshadowed by Peter and Gordon, these fellows have been referred to as "no... those other two guys". The boys scored seven Top 40 hits in the U.S., and NONE in the U.K. In 1953, Jeremy Clyde was a pageboy at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
3. Poor Neil Sedaka. In 1975, as life went on around him everywhere, for him there's only this, "the only game in town".

Answer: solitaire

In 1975 The Carpenters had a number 17 hit with Neil's song "Solitaire". Neil's own version of this ode to loneliness never charted. Neil had 11 chart hits before he finally had a number one hit with his 1962 version of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do".
4. Lots of heartache and sorrow back in 1962 when Dickie Lee had his biggest hit...a song of double suicide. Which one was it?

Answer: Patches

Poor "Patches" of old shanty-town... Because it dealt with teen suicide, a number of radio stations wouldn't play it; it made it to number six on the Billboard charts anyway. After a fairly successful career as a pop artist in the early-mid '60s, Dickie concentrated his efforts in the country music field.
5. Before preservation and ecology became hip, Verdelle Smith gave us this "you can't go home again" tune. What's the name of this 1966 classic?

Answer: Tar and Cement

A one-hit wonder... but what a song! With a voice reminiscent of Dusty Springfield's, and an excellent song, this should have been bigger. This was Verdelle's only hit and it reached number 38. Very sad tune indeed.
6. "He Stopped Loving Her Today", according to George Jones. But why?

Answer: he died

This 1980 tune reached number one on the Country Charts. In all, he's had more than a dozen chart-toppers. George was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992.
7. Perhaps Elvis' saddest song ever was his 1956 recording of "Old Shep". Just what happened to Shep anyway?

Answer: he was shot

This sad song about a boy and his dog was written by Red Foley in 1940. It's been recorded by many artists including Johnny Cash, Dave Dudley, and Pat Boone. Red Foley was Pat Boone's father-in-law.
8. So sad. Away from home through no wish of his own, Bobby Vinton wasn't getting any letters. He told us this in what 1964 hit?

Answer: Mr. Lonely

This was a minor hit for Buddy Greco in 1962. Then, in 1964, this Bobby Vinton penned tune was finally pulled from one of his LPs and released as a single; it was his fourth number one record.
9. Chuck Jackson laments the impending loss of "his beautiful bird" in what 1962 hit?

Answer: Any Day Now

Chuck's powerful yet sensitive handling of this tune made it his biggest hit, reaching number 23. Written by Burt Bacharach and Bob Hilliard, "Any Day Now" would chart again in 1982 (this time by Ronnie Milsap).
10. Long before their Disco Superstardom, the Bee Gees were crafting some fine tunes. One of their best, but not biggest, hits contained these lines: "Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small, and you don't ask the time of day" What was the name of this sad song?

Answer: First of May

Somewhat obscure lyrics evoke memories of lost opportunity... perhaps lost love... The genius is that it's open to interpretation. The Bee Gees had 14 chart hits before they finally hit number one with "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart" in 1971; "First of May" only reached number 37 in 1969. Beginning in the early '70s, and for many years, the three Gibb brothers had adjoining estates in Miami Beach, Florida.
