Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hard Rock: Listening to this guy could possibly give you a case of the "Cat Scratch Fever" or make you do the "Wango Tango" in front of all your friends. Can you get a "Stranglehold" on this question and tell me who I may be describing?

Answer: Ted Nugent

Theodore Anthony Nugent, more commonly known as simply as Ted Nugent, is the Detroit native responsible for several of the hard rock hits played today on classic rock radio. "The Nuge" has been involved with many great musical projects including his solo career, The Amboy Dukes and the Damn Yankees.
2. Soul Music: Although this "Queen of Soul" was born in Memphis, Tennessee, she has been a great ambassador to the Detroit music scene for greater than half a century. Known for her contributions to several genres of music, this lady is a soul singer extraordinaire best known for her signature song "Respect". Can you name her?

Answer: Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin started her singing career as a gospel singer in her father's Baptist church, but from there she has been associated to R&B, soul, pop, funk, jazz and even rock music over her long and storied career. Franklin had her first hit with the song "Today I Sung the Blues" which was recorded in 1960.

It made its mark on the Billboard charts, reaching number ten on the R&B chart. Over 50 years later, Aretha can still prove that she is indeed the "Queen of Soul".
3. Doo Wop: In a move not often seen by a musical group in any genre, this band managed to remain intact with the same members for over forty years, from 1953-1997. Best known for great songs like "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" this Detroit group set the standard for group loyalty. Which group is it?

Answer: The Four Tops

Comprised of original members Levi Stubbs, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Lawrence Payton and Abdul "Duke" Fakir, this Detroit franchise was one of the most successful groups of their genre. With the passing of Payton in 1997, the group ended a run of 44 years of performing intact, a feat most likely never to happen again.

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and are also included in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame.
4. Pop: This lady, born in Bay City, Michigan has been named by the "Guinness World Records" as being the highest selling female artist of all time. Can you name this "Material Girl"?

Answer: Madonna

Madonna Louise Ciccone has been tearing up the music charts since her first hit, "Holiday", was released in 1983. Madonna is a multi-Grammy award winner and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her hits are far too many to list, but turn on any pop rock station and you're likely to hear some of her music being played.
5. Punk Rock: Iggy Pop is an enigmatic punk performer from the Detroit area who has been around since he was the front man of this band?

Answer: The Stooges

Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg Jr.) has been credited as being a pioneer in the punk rock genre. His work with The Stooges was certainly ground breaking. Songs like "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" are often cited as being huge influences on any of the punk bands who followed The Stooges. Iggy Pop and The Stooges were honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
6. Alternative Rock: The White Stripes were the duo of Meg and Jack White who performed primarily dressed in red, black and white. I've heard so many stories regarding the relationship of the two that I'm not sure which one is true. Do you?

Answer: They were previously married.

Jack Gillis met Megan White while she was a bartender and they immediately hit it off. In a twisted move, Jack decided to take on Meg's last name. They were only married a short time, from 1996 to 2000, but their band lasted much longer. The White Stripes formed in 1997 and remained active until 2011 when they formally ended the band.
7. R&B: Stevie Wonder is one of the most famous American musical artists ever. Songs like "Superstition", "Sir Duke" and "Living for the City" all helped propel Wonder's career to superstar status. Which of the following facts below is not true?

Answer: Stevie Wonder was once briefly married to Diana Ross from The Supremes.

No, Stevie Wonder was never married to Diana Ross, but I'm sure they have bumped into each other in the Motown offices over the years. Stevie Wonder got his start as a professional artist in 1961, and by 1963 he had his first hit single titled "Fingertips (Pt. 2). Since then, Wonder has been a constant in rock, soul, funk, jazz and R&B music. Stevie has been inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has been recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors and was even named a Messenger of Peace by the United Nations.
8. Rap: Eminem is often listed as being the greatest rapper of all time, and if album sales are any indication, then that may be true. He has sold over 100 million albums worldwide since the debut of his first major record label release in 1999. What was the name of this album?

Answer: The Slim Shady LP

Marshall Bruce Mathers III took the stage name Eminem (previously M&M) as a take on his initials. "The Slim Shady LP" is actually his second release, but his previous CD, titled "Infinite", was a flop and only sold around 1,000 copies. "The Slim Shady LP" debuted on the Billboard 200.

The album contained some pretty controversial songs and lyrics which drew the ire of many, including friends, family and fellow rap artists.
9. Girl Groups: These girls found great success singing about "Jimmy Mack" and having "Nowhere to Run", but their signature song is all about "Dancing in the Street". Can you name this Motown girl group?

Answer: Martha and the Vandellas

The group was originally formed by friends Gloria Williams, Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard in 1960. Martha Reeves was added to the mix in 1962 where she quickly assumed the role as lead singer. The band went on to release some of the top songs of their genre on the Motown label including "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave", which was the group's only Grammy nomination.

The band was very popular on the touring circuit and they made several appearances on American television.
10. Classic Rock: These guys were an "American Band" fronted by Mark Farner. Their songs "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "The Loco-Motion" are some of their more famous releases. Do you know the name of this band from Flint, Michigan?

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

The band's name was taken from The Grand Trunk Railroad, a rail line in their native Flint, Michigan. The band developed a huge following in the US primarily based on their work ethic and constant touring. Their Todd Rundgren produced album "We're and American Band" was a smash hit and they had another huge album with "E Pluribus Funk". Grand Funk Railroad is the favorite band of Homer Simpson, so they must be something special.
