Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: The Beatles (The White Album)

"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" was written by Paul McCartney/John Lennon. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart for Marmalade in 1969. It did not chart in the US.

The original version "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by The Beatles was on their 1968 album "The Beatles" (The White Album). "OB-LA-DI OB-LA-DA" was the first record by a Scottish group to top the UK singles chart. In 1966 Dean Ford and the Gaylords from Glasgow changed their name to The Marmalade then dropped the prefix The. Now in London with two bass guitar players they signed a record deal with CBS. They played at the Marquee Club where they supported Pink Floyd. After a number of flops CBS threatened to drop them. The group even turned down "Everlasting Love", which became a UK number one hit for Love Affair. They then recorded "Lovin' Things" which became their first hit and peaked at number six on the UK singles chart in 1968. Between 1968 and 1976 they had eight UK Top Ten hits. No UK chart appearances since then.

We had a completely different Fleetwood Mac back in 1969, the group on "Albatross" were all Brits, Mick Fleetwood (drums), Peter Green (lead guitar), Danny Kirwan (guitar) and John McVie (bass guitar). Pete Green must have been inspired to write "Albatross" by Chuck Berry's "Deep Feeling" (1957) and Santo & Johnny's "Sleep Walk" (1959). Listen to these tracks and hear for yourself. "Albatross" returned to the UK singles chart in 1973 and peaked at number two.

The later Anglo/American Fleetwood Mac were Lindsey Buckingham (lead guitar), Mick Fleetwood (drums), Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards), John McVie (bass guitar) and Stevie Nicks (vocals). They did not have a number one hit on the UK singles chart but did have one on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Dreams", which was number one for one week in 1977.

George Harrison was on holiday and Ringo Starr was filming "The Magic Christian" with Peter Sellers, so neither of them played on the song. A number of US radio stations refused to broadcast the song because they objected to what they saw as the sacrilegious use of the words Christ and crucify in the song. It was banned in Spain by the Franco regime, objecting to the lyric "Peter Brown called to say, "You can make it OK, you can get married in Gibraltar near Spain". "Suspicious Minds" was to be not only Elvis's last US number one hit of the '60s, it was his very last number one hit of all during his lifetime. His last number one before "Suspicious Minds" was "Good Luck Charm", which was number one for two weeks in 1962. "Suspicious Minds" was his first US number one hit for over seven years. The longest period he had without a number one hit. It was a different story in the UK. "Leaving On A Jet Plane" was written by John Denver. It was number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 for Peter, Paul & Mary in 1969. It peaked at number two on the UK singles chart in 1970.

Peter Yarrow was born in Manhattan, New York, New York, U. S. A., in 1938. Noel Paul Stookey was born in Baltimore, Maryland, U. S. A., in 1937.
