Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This beautiful song, written by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams, was initially featured in a TV advertisement for Crocker National Bank. In 1970, The Carpenters recorded a version of the song, and it became their second million-selling single. Can you name it?

Answer: We've Only Just Begun

When Richard Carpenter first saw the ad and heard the accompanying song, he felt the tune had the potential to become a hit single. After learning that the song had been co-written by Williams, Richard contacted him about the possibility of recording it. Even though the song in the TV ad only consisted of two verses, the songwriters had written a full-length version, which is the one The Carpenters recorded and released in September of 1970. "We've Only Just Begun" was the group's second consecutive single to reach the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number two in October of 1970.
2. In 1971, Joan Baez scored her only top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, with this tune written by The Band's Robbie Robertson. What's the name of this song?

Answer: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was the B-side of The Band's highest charting single, "Up on Cripple Creek", which peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. The song is about "Virgil Cane", a fictional character who is living in the American South at the end of the Civil War. Robertson and band mate Levon Helm, who was born and raised in Arkansas, did extensive research on the Civil War, so some of the song's lyrics depict actual events.

Although the tune is considered to be one of The Band's signature songs, Baez's version proved to be far more successful, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971.
3. This tune by The Moody Blues was originally released in 1967, but only managed to reach number 103 on the U.S. pop charts. The group re-released the single in 1972, and it rose all the way to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Can you name this song?

Answer: Nights in White Satin

"Nights in White Satin" was written by Justin Hayward, who had joined The Moody Blues in late 1966, following the departure of founding member Denny Laine. The song was included on the LP "Days of Future Passed", which is a concept album where each track represents a different time of the day. "Nights in White Satin", which was the Moody Blues' highest charting single in the U.S., also performed very well on the U.K. Charts, reaching the top 20 in three separate years, 1967, 1972, and again in 1979.
4. The Dutch rock band Golden Earring had their first hit single in the U.S. with this tune about a particular type of love. Do you remember this song from 1973?

Answer: Radar Love

"Radar Love", written by band members George Kooymans and Barry Hay, was Golden Earring's first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 13 in 1973. The group, which formed in The Hague, Netherlands in 1961, had only marginal success in the U.S., but was wildly popular in their home country. Between 1965 and 2005, the band reached the top ten 29 times on the Dutch Top 40, with five of the tunes topping the chart.
5. Joni Mitchell seemed to be in need of some assistance, according to this hit single from 1974. Any chance you remember this tune?

Answer: Help Me

The song tells the story of a young lady who is falling in love, but realizes the relationship is doomed, because the guy in question loves his freedom more than he loves her. Though Mitchell had dated many free spirited men in the past, she has never claimed that the song is about anybody in particular. "Help Me" was Joni Mitchell's only single to crack the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number seven in 1974.
6. This song was a top ten hit for the Everly Brothers in 1960, but a cover version by Linda Ronstadt proved to be even more successful, reaching the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. Can you please name this tune?

Answer: When Will I Be Loved

Written by Phil Everly, "When Will I Be Loved" was the duo's third consecutive top ten hit from 1960, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Ronstadt's version was included on her breakthrough album "Heart Like a Wheel", and was the follow-up to her number one hit single, "You're No Good". Even though "When Will I Be loved" didn't quite reach those heights, it came pretty close, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
7. This former lead singer of the 1960s rock band The Lovin' Spoonful, had a big hit in 1976 with the tune "Welcome Back". Do you remember this gentleman?

Answer: John Sebastian

After a very successful run as the frontman for the Lovin' Spoonful, Sebastian left the band in 1968 to pursue a solo career. In 1975, TV producer Alan Sachs was looking for someone to write the theme song for a new half-hour sitcom called "Kotter", and contacted Sebastian to see if he would be interested. Sebastian agreed, and preceded to write "Welcome Back", a song the producers liked so much, that they decided to change the name of the show from "Kotter" to "Welcome Back, Kotter".

The song became so popular among the show's viewers, Sebastian decided to add an additional verse and release it as a single, which turned out to be a very good idea. "Welcome Back" reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in May of 1976, making it Sebastian's only number one single as a solo artist.
8. Stevie Wonder had a smash hit in 1977 with the tribute song "Sir Duke". The question is, which "Duke" is he paying homage to?

Answer: Duke Ellington

Ever since the death of Duke Ellington in 1974, Wonder wanted to compose a song to show his appreciation for many of the musical greats that had such an impact on his career. Besides Ellington, the song also pays tribute to Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. "Sir Duke" was Wonder's sixth single to reach number one, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in the Spring of 1977.
9. This rock classic by the band Queen spent 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at number four in February of 1978. Can you name this "winning" number?

Answer: We Are the Champions

"We Are the Champions", written by Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, was the band's highest charting single, and was included on their multi-platinum 1977 LP "News of the World". The song has become a rock anthem, and is widely played at sporting events and championship celebrations around the world. Donald Trump thought it would be the perfect tune to play during his introduction at the 2016 Republican National Convention, but Queen disagreed, and immediately denounced his use of the song. "We Are the Champions" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009.
10. I'm not sure if Mr. Spock of "Star Trek" fame was a music lover, but if he was this 1979 hit single by the group Supertramp would have probably been one of his favorites. What's the title?

Answer: The Logical Song

"The Logical Song" was Supertramp's highest charting song, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. The song, which was written by band members Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies, depicts Hodgson's experiences and the changes he went through while attending boarding school in England.

Not only was "The Logical Song" a big hit with Supertramp's fans, it was equally as popular among their peers. The song was honored by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, receiving the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically from 1979.
