Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. British singer Adele is known for creating songs about past relationships. Her album "21" was a huge success and won a Grammy for "Album of the Year" in 2012. The lead song on that album won Grammy awards for "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year." Name this award-winning song.

Answer: Rolling in the Deep

Adele co-wrote the song with Paul Epworth. She has never named her mystery lover. The term "rolling in the deep" was taken from the phrase "roll deep," referring to having someone around to look out for you. In that context the lyrics are quite heart-wrenching.
2. It's been forty years since Carly Simon wrote one of her most famous songs. The words refer to a lover scorned. There's no mystery to who that lover is. What IS a mystery is who Carly had in mind when she wrote the lyrics. Which song is it?

Answer: You're So Vain

Carly has never revealed the identity of that vain lover. When the song came out she was still married to James Taylor and denied that the song was about him. Some believe it was Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty. Even Beatty thought at the time that the song was about him. Carly prefers to leave the source of the lyrics a mystery.
3. One of the most poignant songs ever written was a tribute to a four-year-old boy. Eric Clapton wrote the song for his son, Conor, whose tragic death from a fall from an open window devastated the musician. What is the title of this touching tribute?

Answer: Tears In Heaven

According to Lory del Santo, Conor's mother, it took Clapton a long time to come to terms with being a father. What makes it especially poignant is that he did just that shortly before the boy's death. She claims that she and Eric have never discussed what happened. Both are now married to others and have children from those marriages.
4. British songstress, Lily Allen, wrote a song in 2006 about a turbulent relationship she experienced when she was 18. It was featured on her album "Alright, Still" and became a number one hit in the UK. What is the title of that song?

Answer: Smile

Lily shot to fame on the website "Myspace." Her breakup with DJ Lester Lloyd led to a downward spiral that resulted in her checking into a rehab clinic for depression. She was quick to point out that men were a lot nicer to her then because they didn't want to end up in a song. Allen married Sam Cooper in 2011, gave birth to a daughter, and by all accounts is very happy now.
5. Most people think that this ballad, written by Dolly Parton and made famous by Whitney Houston in the film "The Bodyguard," is about the end of a romance. It was actually written for a different purpose. Can you name the song?

Answer: I Will Always Love You

In 1967 country music legend Porter Wagoner needed to replace a female singer on his TV show. Dolly became the replacement. It took a while for her star to rise but when it did, it out-shone Wagoner. In 1973, when Dolly decided to perform on her own, she wrote the song as a farewell to Wagoner and the fond memories they shared performing together.

Although it was originally a country ballad sung by Dolly, Whitney turned it into a pop hit in 1992.
6. In the late '60s Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell fell deeply in love with Graham Nash, a member of Crosby, Stills and Nash. She dedicated a song to him that she wrote in 1971 which later appeared on her "Blue" album. What is the name of that song?

Answer: My Old Man

Graham Nash came to California from his native England to strike out on his own after leaving the band The Hollies. When he met Joni their connection was immediate. They lived together for a while but the love affair didn't last because each wanted different things from life.

The breakup with Nash took an emotional toll on her. After releasing her third album "Ladies of the Canyon" in 1971, Joni took time off to travel and write. Graham married actress Susan Sennett in 1977 to whom he is still married.

They have three grown children.
7. Stefani Germanotta, better known as Lady Gaga, wrote a song in 2009 that was specifically written for her father. It was a plea for him to have life-saving heart surgery. Which song did Lady Gaga dedicate to her father?

Answer: Speechless

Lady Gaga has always been especially close to her parents. She has credited them with supporting her throughout her career. When her father had a heart attack in 2009 and needed open-heart surgery, he initially refused. She wrote the song "Speechless" in an effort to get him to reconsider.

He gave in and underwent the surgery which Lady Gaga paid for herself. After he began to recover she went back to work. The fruits of her labor resulted in her "Fame Monster" album, released in late 2009.
8. Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam, wrote a song based on a true incident that occurred in Texas in 1991. The title of the song is a tribute to a fifteen-year-old boy who committed suicide at school. It appeared on their debut album "Ten." Name the song.

Answer: Jeremy

On January 8, 1991 Jeremy Delle put a pistol in his mouth and, right in front his classmates, shot himself to death. The incident deeply affected Vedder who is a private person and has had a tendency to avoid the spotlight. At the 1992 MTV Awards, Pearl Jam won four awards for their single "Jeremy."
9. One of the best-known Beatles' songs, written by Paul McCartney, was released in 1968. It was written for Lennon's son, Julian, as a way to help the five-year-old deal with the divorce of his parents. Which Beatles' song is it?

Answer: Hey Jude

At the time McCartney and Lennon wrote the song, John and his wife, Cynthia, were going through a divorce. Paul had grown particularly close to Julian and had the idea to pen the words in hopes of comforting the little boy. The original title was "Hey Jules" but Paul felt it was easier to sing "Hey Jude" so he changed the title.
10. The Ramones were an early punk rock band. Dee Dee Ramone, the band's bassist, wrote a song as a tribute to Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen after their deaths. It appeared on their ninth album, "Animal Boy." What is the song's title?

Answer: Love Kills

Sid Vicious, a member of The Sex Pistols, became friends with Dee Dee Ramone. After Vicious fatally overdosed on heroin, four months after he killed Spungen, Dee Dee wrote "Love Kills." The song refers to his belief that their deaths were the result of a suicide pact. Ironically, Dee Dee Ramone himself fatally overdosed on heroin in 2002.
