Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these performers was never a member of 60s rock supergroup The Yardbirds?

Answer: Steve Marriott

Steve Marriott was a co-founder of legendary UK group The Small Faces. After leaving the group in 1968 he and Peter Frampton formed Humble Pie. In 1991 Steve was killed in a fire at his home in Essex, England.
2. There was one British Invasion group which actually didn't have any Brits in it at all! Who were these guys?

Answer: The Walker Brothers

California lads The Walker Brothers (not really brothers and not really Walker) relocated to the UK to further their musical careers. They scored with several hits, the biggest being "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." John Maus (John Walker) was married to Kathy Young ("A Thousand Stars") from 1965-1969.
3. Denny Laine, original lead singer of the Moody Blues, later became a member of what group?

Answer: Wings

Denny was lead vocalist on "Go Now" the Moody's first U.S. Top Ten hit (and their only UK number one). Wings, of course, was the group formed by Paul McCartney. Grand Slam is a nice breakfast at your local Denny's.
4. British Invasion? Yes. From England? Not necessarily. Which of the following was actually from England?

Answer: Cilla Black

Before becoming Cilla Black she was Priscilla White... and worked as a hat-check girl at Liverpool's Cavern Club. The Seekers were from Australia; Lulu is from Scotland; Tom Jones is from Wales.
5. According to the Small Faces, who came out to groove about, be nice and have fun in the sun?

Answer: the ducks

In 1967 the "Small Faces" hit the U.S. charts with "Itchycoo Park".
"I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up... feed the ducks with a bun.
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun."
This great psychedelic song reached number 18 and was their biggest U.S. hit. Much more successful in the UK, these London lads had seven Top Ten hits from 1966-68. They eventually evolved into The Faces with the addition of Rod Stewart and Ron Wood.
6. Her first hit was the first song ever written by then boyfriend Mick Jagger and Keith Richard. Who was this blonde beauty?

The song was "As Tears Go By." Her biggest hit, it entered the charts in late '64 and reached number 22. A year later The Rolling Stones would have a much bigger hit with it.
7. While the British Invasion was in full swing a number of popular groups were rushed into movies (of varying quality). One of the better ones was "Ferry Cross the Mersey." What popular Liverpool group starred?

Answer: Gerry and the Pacemakers

Nicely filmed in Liverpool, the film includes quite a bit of concert footage (along with a pretty slim story line). A major UK star for a number of years, Gerry remains popular today. His extensive charity work was recognized in 2003 when he was awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire)... no small honor!
8. There was lots of excitement in the 60s about "The Liverpool Sound." Which of these groups actually was from Liverpool?

Answer: The Searchers

Known for their tight harmony and "jangly" guitar sound, the Searchers scored seven Top 40 U.S. hits. Their biggest hit, a cover of the Clovers "Love Potion Number Nine" was also their only Top Ten record. Rolling Stones and DC5 were from London; Herman's Hermits were from Manchester.
9. Which of these British Invasion groups was named after its keyboard player?

Procol Harum, according to group founder Gary Brooker, was named after the group manager's cat (who didn't play the keyboards). Lead singers for Manfred Mann were Paul Jones and later Mike d'Abo.

Answer: Petula Clark

Petula won the Grammy for best Rock and Roll recording for her 1964 mega-hit "Downtown." Among the non-winners were The Beatles for their recording of "A Hard Day's Night."
