Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1964 The Animals released one of their biggest hits, "House of the Rising Sun". What city was the setting for the song?

Answer: New Orleans

The author of the lyrics are unknown. The song's origins are debated, with some accounts going back to the 16th century. It had gone through many changes through the years before the group heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England. The Animals recorded it in just one take in May of 1964.
2. Which song was investigated by the F.B.I. because it was suspected of containing indecent lyrics?

Answer: Louie Louie

The F.B.I. spent more than two years trying to decipher the unintelligible lyrics, which were suppose to contain profanities or suggestive wording. We now know that the song is about a man returning to Jamaica to see the woman he loves.
3. At more than 17 minutes long, "In A Gadda Da Vida" was originally just supposed to be a sound check while the group waited for producer Jim Hilton. What group recorded this classic?

Answer: Iron Butterfly

The song's title is almost surely a slurring of the words "in the garden of Eden". The simple lyrics are only heard at the beginning and end of the song. This left plenty of room for extended solos, including a tribal sounding drum solo.
4. In 1967 the Beatles released "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Inspired by a child's drawing, it describes a dream-like scene that invokes wild imagery. According to the lyrics, what kind of taxis appear on the shore?

Answer: newspaper

The drawing was made by John Lennon's son, Julian. Lucy was a classmate of Julian's that he liked.
5. Which song was a hit for Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs in 1965?

Answer: Wooly Bully

The three wrong answers are songs recorded by Ray Stevens. The "Wooly Bully" lyrics contain the line "Let's not be L 7" which means "Let's not be square" from the shape formed by the fingers making an L on one hand and a 7 on the other.
6. In 1967 Van Morrison released the song that launched his solo career. In "Brown Eyed Girl", what do they bring with them down to the old mine?

Answer: transistor radio

Because of a contract that Van Morrison signed with Bang Records, without the aid of an agent, he never received royalties from the song.
7. Three Dog Night had a hit with a song titled "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog" in 1971.

Answer: False

The actual name of the song was "Joy to the World", but it was often referred to by its first line, "Jeremiah was a bullfrog".
8. Deep Purple released "Smoke on the Water" in 1972. It tells the story of a hotel that burns down. How does the fire start?

Answer: flare gun

Remember the verse:

But Frank Zappa and the Mothers,
Were at the best place around.
But some stupid with a flare gun,
Burned the place to the ground.
9. The Deep Purple hit "Smoke on the Water" is based on real events.

Answer: True

On December 4,1971 Deep Purple were in Switzerland to record an album. That evening, Frank Zappa performed with his group. The concert was interrupted when someone in the audience shot a flare gun into the ceiling. The resulting fire destroyed a casino and a hotel, along with Zappa's equipment.
10. Steppenwolf released "Born to be Wild" in 1967. Since then, it has been used in many movies and television commercials. In 1969 it was used in a soundtrack for the first time. Which movie was it in?

Answer: Easy Rider

Peter Fonda pushed to have Crosby, Stills and Nash do the soundtrack, but the song fit the movie so well, he changed his mind.
