Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this Everly Brothers song, the movie "didn't have much of a plot", so they both fell asleep and he tried to wake her up at 4 o'clock in the morning. Who's the Sleeping Beauty?

Answer: Little Susie

"Wake up, Little Susie", one of their first singles, peaked at #1 on the US charts in 1957, at # 2 in Britain. Like many other Everly songs of that period, it was written by Bordelaux and Felice Bryant. It was banned by some Boston radio stations. They thought the couple in the song was doing more than just taking a nap. It was later covered by Simon & Garfunkel.
2. Next girl, next Everly Brothers song. He was very much in love and wanted his brand new baby to be his brand new wife. Have you heard of her? (A French name)

Answer: Claudette

Roy Orbison wrote this song about his wife. It was released by the Everly Brothers on the reverse side of "All I Have To Do Is Dream" in 1958. In the UK, "Claudette" was one week less at # 1 than "All I Have To Do Is Dream" because that song was first listed alone. In the US, it went solo and was just a Billboard # 30. The real Claudette died in an accident in 1966.
3. This Everly Brothers song is about a young lady who got into a fight at a party. Sadly, he got away without helping her and she was arrested. He's afraid of getting some trouble with her brother and father. Who is the girl in the song? Which song tells this story?

Answer: Poor Jenny

Another Bryant/Bryant song, showing a lot of humour in it's text. It was "only" at # 22 in 1959. It did better in the UK, up to #14. There are two versions. In the most commonly known one the party ends at ten o'clock. The other one says it's already one o' clock when the trouble begins.
4. Now it's getting really criminal: the lad is in jail and sends some last greetings to his girl. What's his request in this Everly Brothers song?

Answer: Take a Message to Mary

This was on the back of "Poor Jenny", also written by the Bryant couple. It did get higher than "Poor Jenny": the highest heights were at # 16. In the UK it walked alone up to # 20. The guy in the song robbed a stage coach and someone was shot. He cancels his wedding from his cell, but doesn't want the girl Mary to know that he's a criminal in jail.

This song was also covered by Bob Dylan.
5. This is a traditional song sung by the Everly Brothers; there are more versions existing than branches on a briar. Sweet Willie died first, then she died after him. Do you remember the young lady?

Answer: Barbara Allen

It was released on "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us", in 1958. The poem/song was first published in print in the UK in 1780, but had already been known for much longer. The context in short: he dies of a broken heart, she comes to his deathbed, but only regrets her actions after he's gone. She dies then also.
6. Question 6 takes us up to the Everly Brothers in the 1960's. Which song named after a girl contains the lyrics "Eyes of Blue, know she's true"? (The girl of the song has two names, both are very common.)

Answer: Carol Jane

"Carol Jane", written by Dave Rich, can be found on "It's Everly Time". Just another (so called) silly love song, but easy to sing along with.
7. In this Everly Brothers song, we're going to the circus. Or is it just that she's treating him so bad, that the people say here he comes, that ...?

Answer: Cathy's Clown

This time a song written by the Everlys themselves. Cathy is the name of a teenage crush of Don's. The song was a gigantic # 1 in both UK and USA.
8. In this Everlys song, his date was met on a dance, she lured him, and then came "that Johnny Boy" - -and off she goes. (This was before John Boy of the Waltons was known, so don't blame him!) Can you name the unfaithful girl?

Answer: Donna, Donna

"Donna, Donna" appeared first on "A Date With The Everly Brothers" from 1960, and strangely enough again in 1965 as the opener on the album "Gone, Gone, Gone". The song was written by the Bryants.
9. In 1957, the girl in this song had a date with Little Richard, now some years later the Everly Brothers are singing about how she's still not doing her daddy's will. Who is she? Who's this wild rocking girl?

Answer: Lucille

The Everly Brothers recorded this song in 1960. The Billboard charts wrote down a # 21, better in the UK : # 4. The list of people who have done this song is of enormous length. Even Status Quo covered it. I don't want to get in trouble with Status Quo fans, so I will say nothing about that version.
10. The biblical queen, who gave this Everly Brothers song its name, was thrown out of a window and was eaten by dogs. There's nothing religious in this song, though. Who is namesake of the song? Which song starts with the following lines: "If ever a devil was born, without a pair of horns"?

Answer: Jezebel

You will find it on "Instant Party", made in 1961. The song - penned by Wayne Shanklin- had its first success when it reached a Billboard # 2 due to Frankie Laine. The Everly Brothers quickened it up, something that Herman's Hermits also did with the same song in later years.

PS: Also on "Instant party": "Girls, girls, girls" - the title track of this quiz.
11. In this Everly Brothers song: Here's a girl, making her guy feel like he's doing a baroque dance. He feel's like a puppet on a string. I'm sure you know this puppeteer and the dance she's directing?

Answer: Nancy's Minuet

That song was composed by Don Everly himself and first recorded in 1962.It was a single together with "(So It Is...So It Was) So it always will be". And you can dance other dances than the minuet to it. The single never reached the US top 40, but struggled up to # 23 in the UK.

About the wrong answers: that are old fashioned dances, too.
12. The Everly Brothers were not the first to do this song. Chuck Berry made this girl famous, and her former name in old bluegrass times was "Ida Red" May it be that you know the Belle's name?

Answer: Maybelline

Written by Russ Frato and first sung by Bob Wills, it became Chuck Berry's first single in 1955. Ten years later, in 1965, it could be found on the Everlys' "Rock 'n Soul" album.
13. This lesser known song by the Every Brothers tells a sad love story, like a classic streetballad--of two little animals you wouldn't like to own. The girl in the song dies of (what else) a broken heart. Who is she? Who's that heartbroken creature?

Answer: Fifi, the Flea

Originally a Hollies song, it was given to the Everly Brothers for their "Two Yanks in England" album, released in 1966. The "L. Ransford" noted in the writer's credits was used by the Hollies as an alias. They played on this album, too.

The little flea Fifi loves the clown of a flea cirus. He's a kind of Don Juan, so she dies for love. He breaks down at her grave and is soon buried next to her. Anyhow, their are "girl fleas" mentioned in the song, so I hope you are not furious because I put this question into this quiz.
14. Also an 1944 movie title, this song by the Everly Brothers was recorded in the seventies. Any clue where you can you find "Wine in the cupboard and beer on ice"?

Answer: Up in Mabel's Room

Penned by Phil Everly, this is a track appearing on the 1972 released album "Stories We Could Tell". Mabel seems to give drinks, cigarettes and good advice. That album contained a song written by Don Everly called "I'm Tired of Singing my Song in Las Vegas", something which was surely one of many reasons why they duo broke up in 1973.
15. Last and least we reach the eighties. People growing old often remember their early loves, like this for example: "The lights shine down the valley, the wind blows up the alley, oh, and how I wish I was lying in the..." But maybe you remember the song title better from Sutherland Brothers and Quiver?

Answer: Arms of Mary

After a long, dry spell the Everly Brothers released EB 84 in -that's easy - in 1984. That was followed up in 1986 by "Born Yesterday", were you can hear "Arms of Mary", written by the Sutherlands and a # 5/UK for them in 1975.

It's time now to say "Bye, bye Love". I hope you had some fun.
