Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Les Paul's birth name?

Answer: Lester Polfuss

I wonder if he realized his real name wouldn't fit on the headstock of the most popular guitar that Gibson made. For over 50 years, Gibson Guitars has sold countless versions of his great idea.
2. As a musician and an inventor, he was given a nickname that included his place of birth. What was this name?

Answer: The Wizard of Waukesha

He came from humble beginnings to travel the world, plying his trade with some of the most notable musicians of modern times.
3. While other inventors of the time were working on an electric guitar design, Les created a design of his own that was quite unusual looking for a guitar. It was built using a wooden 4x4 piece of lumber with steel strings, a single pickup, and a standard guitar neck. What did Les call this contraption?

Answer: The log

He cut the body of a semi-acoustical guitar in half and attached the wings to the "log" so it didn't look too unorthodox.
4. In 1938 Les formed a trio with two other musicians, one of whom was the older half brother to a famed guitar picker. Who was this famed younger brother?

Answer: Chet Atkins

Les formed a duo with Chet. They were known as Chester and Lester.
5. Under contract with Gibson guitars, Les was not allowed to be seen in public playing anything other than a Gibson guitar. In 1961 Gibson changed the famed Les Paul model guitar without consulting the inventor. What was this new model called?

Answer: The SG

Angus Young, of AC/DC, has made this one of the most recognizable guitars in hard rock. Short of the Les Paul of course.
6. This rock and roll legend, who inducted Les into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is quoted as saying "I've copied more licks from Les Paul than I care to admit".

Answer: Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck, one of the many great guitar players that chose the Les Paul as their guitar of choice.
7. Les had a recording partner for many years, scoring such hits as "Vaya Con Dios" and "Bye Bye Blues". She was also his wife until 1964. Who was this beautiful voice?

Answer: Mary Ford

Les and Mary were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978.
8. Les gave this future hitmaker his first guitar lesson in Mahwah, New Jersey. He was also this musicians godfather.

Answer: Steve Miller

How would you like to be able to say "Yeah, Les Paul is my godfather"? Steve Miller would go on to have a notable career of his own. He is still performing to this day.
9. Talk about dedication to his craft, in 1948 Les was in a near fatal auto accident that shattered his right arm and elbow. The surgeons were able to repair his arm but his elbow was destroyed, requiring that his arm be fixed in one position for life. Les asked that his arm be positioned so he could continue playing his guitar. In what midwest state did this accident happen?

Answer: Oklahoma

Like Django Reinhardt, Les would ignore his handicap and continue to perfect his skills. Both of these men were absolutely hardcore dedicated musicians.
10. In what year was Les inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Answer: 1988

Pretty much a given, that any guitar player that's in the Hall of Fame owes a nod to Les. If not for his guitar, then for the many other creations of his, multi-tracking, overdubbing, and effects. So much of todays modern sound would be impossible if not for Les Paul. Les would go on to have a career that most modern musicians could only hope for.

He started playing at 13 and played until the age of 94, over 80 years. RIP Mr. Paul.
