Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nelly Furtado is famous for her strong Portuguese roots, and although both of her parents were born and raised in Portugal, Nelly was not. Where was Nelly actually born?

Answer: British Columbia, Canada

Nelly was born and spent her childhood in Victoria, British Columbia, to working-class Portuguese parents. She first turned to music as a form or relaxation and enjoyment, and learned to play the guitar and ukulele.
2. Nelly was not always part of the music scene, and she had a very normal job at first. She spent eight summers doing this job with her mother, but what was it?

Answer: Chambermaid

This was her mother's job also. After she left school, Nelly moved to the city of Toronto and took a job working in an alarm company. By night, she would go out and listen to music in Toronto's clubs and pubs.
3. Before Nelly was signed by a label, or even noticed by record executives, she was part of a hip-hop duo. What was the name of this duo?

Answer: Nelstar

She was spotted by Brian West and Gerald Eaton when performing with Nelstar, and was asked soon after to produce her demo. They were instantly impressed, and not long after, Nelly made her first album 'Whoa, Nelly!'.
4. In 2003, shortly before the release of her long awaited second album, Nelly gave birth to her first child, a girl. What name did she give to her daughter?

Answer: Nevis

Nelly's second album, 'Folklore', was brought out two months after the birth of baby Nevis. Her second album contains music which is much more folk oriented.
5. In 2004, Portugal hosted the Euro 2004 football championships. Nelly was asked to perform at the final ceremony, and selected a song from her second album, 'Folklore'. What song did she sing?

Answer: Forca

'Forca', which means 'kick butt', was chosen as it was thought it would give the Portuguese team the confidence boost they needed to go on and win the match. They lost to Greece 1-0, which Nelly explained was all right, because the Portuguese 'like to mourn'. Greece won the championship.
6. On Nelly's second album, 'Folklore', she uses many different musical instruments and devices to make her music sound more 'folky'. Which of these people was enlisted to play the banjo on her album, though?

Answer: Bela Fleck

Caetano Veloso was used on tracks such as 'Saturdays' as an accompanying vocalist. He also appears on other tracks where he has less obvious vocal roles.
7. Some of the lyrics in Nelly's second album were very profound. In one song, she sings that 'You paint my face in your magazines, try to make it whiter than it seems. Paint me all the way to dreams, shove away my ethnicity'. Which track do these scorning lyrics come from, though?

Answer: Powerless

This lyric was in response to the music industry, who tried to hide Nelly's Portuguese ethnicity and make her appear more 'white', so that she would presumably sell more records.
8. Nelly claims that she was in the Azores when she saw a man wearing a 'Coca-Cola' shirt, work trousers, and gumboots. This inspired her to make the album 'Folklore'. The main reason she was in the Azores, however, is that her parents are from the Azores.

Answer: true

Nelly's parents grew up in a small rural village on the Azores, which are an archipelago of small, Portuguese islands in the Atlantic ocean. She claims she saw this man on a road coming down a hill. The man was carrying a pitchfork at the time.
9. Nelly released two songs in Canada off of her first album 'Whoa, Nelly!'. What were they called?

Answer: 'I'm Like a Bird' and 'Turn Off The Light'

Both of these tracks made it into the top ten in Canada, but no other singles were released. Three singles were released off of her 'Folklore' album in the UK, and those were 'Forca', 'Powerless', and 'Try'.
10. Finally, fill in the missing song lyric. 'Not worse than Shelley's rape behind the ___________ By a man she thought was fine, didn't tell anybody Or maybe back then we just thought that she was getting some' Which famous American chain fills in that blank?

Answer: McDonald's

K-Mart is also mentioned in the song, as Nelly admits to 'getting drunk in the bushes outside the K-Mart'. These come from the song 'Explode', in which Nelly sings of her teenage years.
