The Mars Volta Lyrics Trivia Quiz

The greatest band ever, with the most perplexing lyrics to add. I will mostly cite one liners from the lyrics of their songs, ranging from their debut "Tremulant" EP up to their third full-length studio album "Amputechture". Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which song can you hear Cedric Bixler-Zavala say: "Cruelty is the wrath of my instrument."?

Answer: Tetragrammaton

From the longest track off the "Amputechture" album. You'll hear Cedric say this about towards 4/5ths of the song. The best line from all of their songs, I should say.
2. TMV closes out a song with this line: "It's been said long time ago, you'd be the first and last to know."

Answer: Inertiatic ESP

This is the last line from the single off of their "De-Loused in the Comatorium" album. This track practically put them on the map.
3. A brief excerpt from a Mars Volta Song in Spanish that has the lines "Sangre sonando de rabia naci." can be heard on which track?

Answer: Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus

This is off the first track from their sophomore full-length album "Frances the Mute". Probably the only track other than Cassandra Gemini that I like, and what a song it is. Creepy ending to the song, clocking in at over 13 minutes.

Based on my own interpretation, this line means "the bloody sound of rage is born." Then again, I don't speak fluent Spanish or Latin.
4. A creepy line from a long track where you can hear an eerie voice mention "She was a mink handjob in sarcophagus heels" is found on which TMV song?

Answer: Cassandra Gemini

The longest track from TMV! Reminiscent of old prog-rock tracks, this baby clocks in at over 32 minutes subdivided to 8 tracks which is over half of the number of the tracks in the entire album! The line is not actually sung, but more like recited by an horrifying voice in the beginning of the track.

This is probably their masterpiece though most would argue that it's too long and filled with unnecessary noise.
5. What Mars Volta track that wasn't a released single had the lines "Sterling clear, blackened ice."?

Answer: Cicatriz ESP

From the longest track in the "De-Loused" album. It's about 12 and a half minutes long, with the middle of the track filled with effects to create an image of a void outer-space exploration. Back-up vox of John Frusciante of Red Hot can be heard if you listen closely to the track.

I personally describe the song as the journey of a Mexican astronaut from Tijuana and back. Hehe...
6. Cedric croons with a high-pitched voice the words "Put a muzzle on the lamb" from what song?

Answer: Day of the Baphomets

The best track in my opinion from the "Amputechture" album. A tour-de-force of sound. Love the addition of the sax in the track fighting with Frusciante's guitar solo.
7. From a toned down song, the lines "One day this chalk outline will circle this city" came off of which TMV single?

Answer: Televators

Their second single off of the "De-Loused album". Gotta love the video. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you check it out on YouTube or somewhere. The tarsier monkey in the video is freaky enough as it is in real life! The graphics are top-notch, illustrating a dark, mutating forest imagery.
8. Off of another well-known track, "They're the kind that will talk through a wheezing of coughs" are lyrics taken off of which single?

Answer: The Widow

This is the first single off of the "Frances the Mute" album. Not really fond of this track, but die-hard TMV fans still would consider this a hit and would have easily gotten this question right.
9. "It's the evidence of humans as ornaments" is a line taken from the chorus of which of their songs?

Answer: Meccamputechture

Another track off of the "Amputechture" album. Not much to say about this track, except that it's TMV at their best as always!
10. TMV discreetly states the line "I've seen the arc shake from your mnemonic tongue" on one of their songs.

Answer: Viscera Eyes

From the first single off of "Amputechture". This line might not be familiar to some since this wasn't included in the radio edit version. The actual length of this track is over 9 minutes.

I can't believe they edited this part of the song, because this is where Cedric turns into, as my friends would say, "going Michael Jackson". He's way better than MJ and with not one criminal offense pertaining to pedophilia.
11. Another high-pitched line that Cedric sings is "Carpel jets hit the ground"; it comes from which track?

Answer: Drunkship of Lanterns

This song from "De-Loused" has a very eerie feel of being on a pirate junk ship from Asia. Either the title has gotten into me or that I gotta cut back on hallucinating too much with my own depictions as I listen to their tracks...
12. The line "A mouth to mouth on the chalkboard written with fingernail distaste" can be heard towards the end of which song?

Answer: L'Via L'Viaquez

Another track that has a radio edit version since almost all of TMV's songs are too long to play on the radio. This time they chopped off some of the instrumentals heard on the track.

FYI, the choice of "Tira Me A Las Aranas" is an instrumental, sort of an intro to "Drunkship of Lanterns". It has no lyrics.
13. From a lesser known track, "Tangled in thorns to walk unborn" is off of which track from TMV?

Answer: Concertina

Isn't it obvious by now that the some of the questions I posted that have English lyrics have Hispanic titles and that questions with Hispanic lyrics have answers that are from English titles? Tricky if you're not a Mars Volta fan isn't it?

By the way, this is probably their most well-known track from the "Tremulant" EP released before "De-Loused in the Comatorium".
14. Based on a title of one of their albums, the line "De-loused in the Comatorium" can be heard on which track?

Answer: Eunuch Provocateur

How interesting that the title of their acclaimed debut LP isn't to be found on any of the tracks on that album, but on the EP that was released before it.
15. Another line that contains a title of one of TMV's albums, "It's not over 'til the tremulant sings." is off of what song?

Answer: Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt

...but this quiz is over, finally!

Yet another reversal of roles, the album title of their EP is to be found on a track from the "De-Loused" LP, the chilling end to the character personifying Julio Venegas, a dear friend of the band. This whole album illustrates their friend's journey from the afterlife in a coma to life and back to death again. One of very few bands to successfully make a concept album like classic rock acts such as Pink Floyd, Dream Theater and Rush. Certainly, The Mars Volta is the future of music as we speak!

Hope you enjoyed the quiz!
