Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 10cc's first UK hit had the same title as the 1958 US hit by Ritchie Valens but was a different song. What is the song title?

Answer: Donna

"Donna" written by Kevin Godley/Lol Creme was a number two hit on the UK singles chart for 10cc in 1972. It did not chart in the US.

10cc were Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart. All members of the group were multi-instrumentalists, producers, singers and song writers.

All except Eric Stewart were childhood friends and they first connected musically in 1964. After being in various groups they all recorded together for some time before coming together as 10cc in 1972.
2. 10cc's first UK number one hit was named after a latex projectile. Can you name it?

Answer: Rubber Bullets

"Rubber Bullets" was a number one hit for one week on the UK singles chart in 1973. It reached number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

Although the BBC didn't ban the record they limited its airplay. This was because of the ongoing conflict in Northern Ireland at the time and the British Army's use of rubber bullets to quell rioting.

The song written by Kevin Godley, Lol Creme and Graham Gouldman, was in fact about the riot at the Attica Correctional Facility, in Attica, New York, USA, in 1971.
3. 10cc bass player Graham Gouldman wrote many songs that other people had hits with. Which one of these is the correct song and artist combination?

Answer: "Bus Stop" - The Hollies

All of the alternative song choices for this question were written by Graham Gouldman.

"For Your Love" was a number three hit for The Yardbirds on the UK singles chart in 1965. It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

"Bus Stop" was a number five hit for The Hollies on the UK singles chart in 1966. It also reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

"No Milk Today" was a number seven hit for Herman's Hermits on the UK singles chart in 1966. It reached number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the B-Side of "There's A Kind Of Hush" in 1967.

"Pamela Pamela" was a number 11 hit for Wayne Fontana on the UK singles chart in 1967. It did not chart in the US.
4. What were 10cc doing on Wall Street?

Answer: The Wall Street Shuffle

"The Wall Street Shuffle" was a number ten hit on the UK singles chart for 10cc in 1974. It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

"The Wall Street Shuffle" was written by Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman. It was on their 1974 album "Sheet Music" and was the most successful single released from the album.

Bringing together Yen, Buck, Mark, Getty, Rothschild and Howard Hughes in a song about Wall Street, was just brilliant.
5. Which kind of soup did 10cc compare life with in one of their songs?

Answer: Minestrone

"Life Is A Minestrone" was a number seven hit on the UK singles chart in 1975. It did not chart in the US.

It was written by Lol Creme/Eric Stewart after listening to a radio talk show. They were driving home after recording at their own Strawberry Studios. They thought they heard someone say "Life Is A Minestrone" on the radio and thought it would make a great title for a song.
6. What is the missing word in these lyrics from the song "I'm Not In Love" "I'm not in love So don't forget it It's just a silly ____ I'm going through"

Answer: phase

"I'm Not In Love" was the second number one hit for 10cc. It was number one for two weeks on the UK singles chart in 1975. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

"I'm Not In Love" was written by Graham Gouldman/Eric Stewart. The song has been described as the slowest number one and has been regarded by many people over the years as a pop masterpiece.

The wall of voices effect on the record was created by multiple overdubbing of the groups voices singing a single note together. Altogether the process produced 256 voices that sounded like a choir.
7. A guitar attachment called the Gizmotron invented by group members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme was first heard on a 10cc B-Side "Gismo My Way" and on their second album. What is the title of that album released in 1974?

Answer: Sheet Music

The album "Sheet Music" gave 10cc a number nine hit on the UK album chart in 1974. It reached number 81 on the Billboard album chart the same year.

"Gismo My Way" was the instrumental B-Side of the 1974 hit "The Wall Street Shuffle".

The Gizmotron device was a small box which attached to the bridge of a guitar. It consisted of six small motor driven wheels with serrated edges. They were activated by pressing one or more of the keys located on the top of the device. That allowed the wheels to descend against a motor driven shaft and bow the strings. The sound was affected by the type of guitar strings being used. The device was difficult to use and parts were not replaceable; by the end of the '70s Gizmotronics set up by Musitronics to produce the Gizmotron went bankrupt and the project was abandoned.
8. Which James Bond Movie starring Sean Connery is mentioned in the song "I'm Mandy Fly Me"?

Answer: Dr. No

"I'm Mandy Fly Me" written by Stewart/Gouldman/Godley was a number six hit for 10cc on the UK singles chart in 1976. It reached number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

The song lyrics containing the movie title are as follows:

"I saw her walking on the water
As the sharks were comin' for me
I felt Mandy pull me up give me the kiss of life
Just like the girl in Dr. No, No, No, No"
9. Drummer Kevin Godley and guitarist Lol Creme left 10cc in 1976. What was the title of the first 10cc hit without them?

Answer: The Things We Do For Love

"The Things We Do For Love" was a number six hit for 10cc on the UK singles chart in 1976. It reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.

Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left 10cc after differences between them and Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman became more apparent during the recording of the album "How Dare You" in 1976. They went on to produce the three album set "Consequences" in 1977 and had two UK Top Ten singles in 1981.

Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart recruited drummer Paul Burgess and carried on as 10cc, a three piece band. Their first album after Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left was "Deceptive Bends". It was named after a road sign that used to be on the southbound A24 road between Leatherhead and Dorking in Surrey, England.
10. "I don't like cricket", "I don't like reggae", "Don't like Jamaica"? What are 10cc singing about here?

Answer: Dreadlock Holiday

"Dreadlock Holiday" was a number one hit for one week on the UK singles chart for 10cc in 1978. It reached number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

"Dreadlock Holiday" was written by Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman. It was the first track on their 1978 album "Bloody Tourists". The events that unfold in the song are based on the actual experiences of The Moody Blues singer Justin Hayward and 10cc's Eric Stewart while on holiday in the Caribbean.

This was the third and last UK number one hit for 10cc. It also proved to be their last UK Top 20 hit.
