Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The band that would become Badfinger began in Swansea, Wales. In the mid-1960s, the group became The Iveys, with Tom Evans joining in 1967. A key turning point in the band's career occurred when they were signed in 1968 to which record company?

Answer: Apple Records

In April, 1968 Mal Evans and Peter Asher convinced The Beatles to sign The Iveys to their label.
The group was named after a street in Swansea.
At this early stage, the members of the group were Pete Ham on lead guitar, vocals; Tom Evans on rhythm guitar, vocals; Ron Griffiths on bass guitar and Mike Gibbins on drums.
2. The Iveys' first release on Apple Records was a ballad written by Tom Evans. The song was released in November 1968 and did well in Europe, but not in the UK or USA. What is the title of this debut song (it might not be about today or yesterday!)?

Answer: Maybe Tomorrow

"Maybe Tomorrow", produced by Tony Visconti, reached number one in the Netherlands but the single didn't do well in other markets. So Apple Records decided to release The Ivey's first album "Maybe Tomorrow" (which contained the title song) only in Japan and Europe. This album has become a collector's item with the subsequent success of Badfinger.
3. Following the band's name change, Badfinger released a single, "Come and Get It" used in the film "The Magic Christian". The song proved to be extremely successful in broadening the band's profile, reaching number four in the UK and number seven in the USA. Which Beatle wrote this song?

Answer: Paul McCartney

The name "Badfinger" came via Neil Aspinall from a working title to The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends"-"Bad finger Boogie". It was felt that The Iveys was "too nice" for the group.
Paul McCartney played the key role in the evolution of the song: writing, producing and choosing Tom Evans as lead vocalist. He told the band to record it exactly as instructed.
"Come And Get It'" was the last Badfinger song on which Ron Griffiths played. He was replaced by Joey Molland in October 1969.
4. Appearing on the 1970 album "No Dice", this song was written and sung by Pete Ham. Which Badfinger single reached number five in The US and number eight in the UK?

Answer: No Matter What

"No Matter What" was produced by Mal Evans and was the first Badfinger-composed song to be a top ten hit.
The song has been covered by numerous artists including Def Leppard, Jellyfish, The Knack, R.E.M., and Dogstar.
"No Matter What" was used in the movies "Outside Providence" (1999) and "The In Laws" (2003).
5. George Harrison produced this 1971 single, which became Badfinger's highest charting song in the US at number four. Which is the song that contains the lucid lyrics "I remember holding you while you sleep, Everyday I feel the tears that you weep"

Answer: Day After Day

"Day After Day" was on the 1971 album "Straight Up". George Harrison plays slide guitar as well as producing the song.
Artists who have covered the song include Rod Stewart, Midge Ure and Savatage.
The song was included in a 2007 episode of "The Simpsons".
6. The best known of Badfinger songs was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans. It was first released on their second album "No Dice". Harry Nilsson's version was a worldwide number one in 1972 as was Mariah Carey's cover in 1993 (but number three in the US). What is the title of this iconic song?

Answer: Without You

"Without You" has been covered by hundreds of artists including Hall and Oates, Heart, Air Supply, Shirley Bassey, Elaine Paige, Cilla Black and The London Symphony Orchestra.
The writing of this song was a joint effort. Pete Ham had a song called "Is This Love?" which Tom Evans complimented with the "I can't live, if living is without you" chorus.
The song was also used in the hit movie "Casino".
7. This song appeared on Badfinger's 1971 album "Straight Up". Released as a single, it reached number 14 in the US and number seven in Canada. Can you identify the song that has been used in the film "The Departed" and the television series "Breaking Bad"?

Answer: Baby Blue

Written by Pete Ham about a woman he met on a US tour, "Baby Blue" was produced by Todd Rundgren.
As mentioned earlier, it has gained greater popularity in subsequent years as a result of being included in the soundtrack to the movie "The Departed" and later, the television series "Breaking Bad" where it appeared on the finale of the show.
8. This Pete Ham ballad was Badfinger's last single on Apple Records. The lyrics illustrate the band's reluctance to leave "Oh, I'm sorry but it's time to move away, Though inside my heart I really want to stay". What is the name of this single that ironically includes the record label in its title?

Answer: Apple of My Eye

"Apple of My Eye" was the single from Badfinger's album "Ass". Produced by Chris Thomas, it was not only only Badfinger's Apple last single, but also the last non-Beatles single released on the label.
9. Badfinger signed a big recording contract with Warner Brothers but in the process of recording albums, conflicts occurred between the record company and their unscrupulous manager, as well as each other. Tragically, this culminated in Pete Ham taking his own life in April 1975. The band broke up but re-emerged again in the late 1970s. In 1983, Tom Evans took his life in exactly the same way as Pete Ham, suicide by hanging. Is this true or false?

Answer: True

The band recorded two albums with Warner Brothers, "Badfinger" and "Wish You were Here". However, during this period (1973-5), band members received little renumeration from their manager, Stan Polley, who was involved in a legal dispute with Warner Brothers over missing monies. This dispute effectively ended Warner Brothers' involvement/promotion of Badfinger.
Tom Evan's suicide in 1983, mirroring Pete Ham's death by hanging was the culmination of many years of frustration/disappointment for the band members.
10. The band reformed in the late 1970s and recorded the 1979 album "Airwaves". Which single, written by Joey Molland, was released from the album?

Answer: Love Is Gonna Come at Last

"Love Is Gonna Come at Last", produced by David Malloy, only reached number sixty nine on the Billboard charts. Badfinger was unable to capture the 'magic' sound of their original lineup.
