Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. P-Funk is short for which of the following?

Answer: All of them

Depending on your source of choice, P-Funk has been used interchangeably with all three terms. Plainfield, New Jersey is the place where The Parliaments, the forerunners of Parliament, actually formed.
2. Who was the leader and founder of Parliament and Funkadelic and considered the founder of P-Funk?

Answer: George Clinton

Clinton, of the George not Bill variety, set P-Funk in motion starting in 1969 when he hired some musicians from his former band and some local Plainfield musicians. A few years later, Collins joined up as the P-Funk empire grew. And, although the ex-prez was never a P-Funk All-Star, the thought of a musical collaboration of Clinton and Clinton is an intriguing one. Perhaps Phil Spector could produce it.
3. George Clinton was a staff writer for Motown Records in the sixties.

Answer: True

Clinton spent a few years in the Motown stable, although none of the songs he wrote or co-wrote were among the label's monster hits. Interestingly, many musical scholars say that the brand of danceable funk that Clinton created was one of the reasons for Motown's later downfall.
4. Which of the following groups was not part of the P-Funk Empire?

Answer: The Commodores

Although The Commodores were quite funky in their early years, they were never part of the P-Funk Empire. The Brides and Godmoma were girl groups that performed as backing vocalists for several P-Funk projects at some point. Collins, of course, was the primary bassist and sometimes vocalist for Clinton projects.
5. Parliament / Funkadelic created a series of fictional, recurring characters that appeared on several albums and during live concert performances. Which of the following was NOT one of those characters?

Answer: Hannibal Lectorstein

As strange as all of these names sound, Clinton never got around to doing a parody of Hannibal The Cannibal, but who knows what the future might hold?
6. George Clinton wrote the theme song for what television show?

Answer: The Tracy Ullman Show

The song was titled "You're Thinking Right".
7. Which of the following P-Funk classics was not a cross-over Top 40 pop hit?

Answer: Atomic Dog

Although it reached number one on the R&B chart, "Atomic Dog" stalled at number 101 on the pop chart. Chart-wise, "Tear The Roof Off That Sucker" was the biggest hit, peaking at number fifteen in 1976. "Flash Light" hit number 16 and "One Nation Under A Groove" hit number 28, a few years later. All four songs reached Gold status.
8. George Clinton once signed with Prince's record label and appeared in the film "Graffiti Bridge".

Answer: True

It was natural that Prince would sign Clinton, as he was a big fan of both Clinton and funk in general. Besides "Graffiti Bridge", Clinton also appeared in the movies "House Party", "PCU", "Good Burger" and "The Breaks".
9. George Clinton produced the album "Freaky Styley" by what alternative rock band?

Answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Peppers were long-time fans of P-Funk and asked him to collaborate with them in 1985. The result was a hit album with some of the funkiest alternative rock grooves of all time. Later, Clinton would work with Primal Scream on their song "Funky Jam".
10. Which of the following happened to the P-Funk Universe in 1997?

Answer: Sixteen members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

Because the P-Funk Universe was so interconnected, sixteen of its most active members were ushered into the Hall at one time, including Clinton & Bootsy Collins. Clinton is alive and well as of 2008 and still recording and producing his own brand of funk.
