Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I keep straining my ears to hear a sound. Maybe someone ..."

Answer: is digging under ground.

New York Mining Disaster 1941 ... "I keep straining my ears to hear a sound. Maybe someone is digging under ground, or have they given up and all gone home to bed, thinking those who once existed now are dead. Have you seen my wife Mr. Jones?"
Written in an empty echoing stairwell and recorded in 1967, this is likely one of the Bee Gees most familiar hits.
2. "Now it's my turn to say and I say you're ...."

Answer: a holiday.

Holiday ... "Ooh you're a holiday, every day, such a holiday. Now it's my turn to say and I say you're a holiday. It's something I thinks worthwhile If the puppet makes smile If not then you're throwing stones. Throwing stones, throwing stones."
The album was "Bee Gees 1st" recorded in 1967.
3. "And now I've found that the world is round and of course ..."

Answer: it rains everyday

World ... "Now I've found that the world is round and of course it rains everyday. Living tomorrow, where in the world will I be tomorrow? How far am I able to see? Or am I needed here?"
I'd never heard this one until I got "The Record". It reminds me of that pessimistic philosophy of the late 60's. The future being a frightening thing.
4. "But I didn't see that ..."

Answer: the joke was on me.

"I Started a Joke ... which started the whole world crying, but I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no. I started to cry which started the whole world laughing, oh if I'd only seen that the joke was on me-e-e-e...."
More melancholy, this time from the "Idea" album of 1968. Have you seen the video? Oh the hair! And you thought the disco manes were something.
5. "But you and I, our love will never die. But guess who'll cry ..."

Answer: come first of May

First of May ... "Now we are tall and Christmas trees are small and you don't ask the time of day. But you and I, our love will never die but guess who'll cry come first of May."
Surprised that the Bee Gees wrote this? I was. I'd, of course, heard Charlotte Church's rendition.
6. "Now and then you need someone older. So darlin' ..."

Answer: you run to me

"Run to Me ... whenever you're lonely. Run to me when you need a shoulder. Now and then you need someone older, so darlin', you run to me."
Have you heard Oscar de la Hoya's version of Run to Me? Yup, the boxer. It's really, very nicely done. No kidding.
7. "You'll never know just what you mean to me ..."

Answer: all that jive, you got so much

Jive Talkin' ... "Oh my child, you'll never know just what you mean to me. Oh my child, you got so much. You're gonna take away my energy with all your jive talkin'."
From the album "Main Course" 1975 ... before "Saturday Night Fever".
8. "I can still feel the breeze ..."

Answer: that rustles through the trees

How Can You Mend a Broken Heart ... "I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees and misty memories of days gone by. We could never see tomorrow. No-one said a word about the sorrow. And how can you mend a broken heart? How can you stop the rain from falling down?"
Really a very pretty song from "Trafalgar" but I couldn't resist just one jibe at the disco videos. Polyester, tight pants, chains and big hair ...
9. "You don't know what it's like, baby you don't know what it's like ..."

Answer: to love somebody, the way I love you

To Love Somebody ... "You don't know what it's like, baby, you don't know what it's like. To love somebody, love somebody, the way I love you."
A favourite for covers ... Michael Bolton, Bonnie Tyler and American Idol contestants too.
10. "Now for once in you life you're alone ..."

Answer: but you ain't got a dime, there's no time for the phone

I've Gotta Get a Message to You ... "Now for once in your life you're alone but you ain't got a dime there's no time for the phone. I've just gotta get a message to you, hold on, hold on. One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on."
Another very recognizable oldie. So many songs so few questions. Perhaps it's time for "The Record, Disc Two"?
