Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Rutles original song was called "With a Girl Like You" from their movie and album "A Hard Day's Rut". Can you find which song The Beatles turned it into with these lyrics? "'Cause I've been in love before And I found that love was more Than just holding hands"

Answer: If I Fell

The Rutles, also known as The Prefab Four, were Ron, Dirk, Stig and Barry. The cause of the failure with their movie "A Hard Day's Rut" was put down to the fact that voice actors dubbed their voices and the movie was premiered on Rutland Weekend Television which had a limited broadcast area.

The Beatles song was "If I Fell" from their UK album "A Hard Day's Night". The album was number one for 21 consecutive weeks on the UK album chart in 1964. It was number one for 14 weeks on the US album chart. In the US, it was released on the B-side of the single "And I Love Her" and reached number 53 on the US pop chart in 1964.
2. Although not written by The Rutles, "Number One" was one of their fans' favourites from the album "Please Rut Me". They missed out on chart success when The Beatles recorded it on their first UK album "Please Please Me". What did The Beatles rename the song with these words? "You know you look so good, (look so good) You know you got me goin' now, (got me goin')"

Answer: Twist and Shout

The Rutles did not chart anywhere with the "Number One" single or their first album "Please Rut Me".

"Twist and Shout" from The Beatles first UK album "Please Please Me" was released on The Beatles first UK E.P.(extended play single) with "A Taste of Honey", "Do You Want to Know a Secret" and "There's a Place" in 1963. It spent 21 weeks at number one on the UK E.P. chart. The E.P. sold so many copies in the UK that it reached number four on the New Musical Express singles chart. The "Please Please Me" album reached number one on the UK album chart and again sold so many copies it reached number 12 on the New Musical Express singles chart. In the US the song was on The Beatles first album "Introducing the Beatles" it reached number two on the US album chart in 1964. "Twist and Shout" was also released as a single and reached number two on the US pop chart in 1964.
3. The Rutles' "Doubleback Alley" was a song about a thoroughfare in their hometown in the UK. Which Beatles song was it turned into with these lyrics? "On the corner is a banker with a motor car The little children laugh at him behind his back"

Answer: Penny Lane

The Rutles original double A-side single release "Doubleback Alley/W. C. Fields Forever" was delayed when they had to find a new drummer because their original drummer got lost in the Mersey tunnel and was never seen again.

The Beatles then rush released their double A-side single "Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever" which reached number two on the UK chart in 1967. "Penny Lane" reached number one for one week and "Strawberry Fields Forever" reached number eight on the US pop chart the same year. It was kept off the top of the UK chart by the single "Release Me" by Englebert Humperdinck. It was rumored at the time that thousands of Rutles fans bought "Release Me" to keep The Beatles out of the number one spot.
4. The Rutles track "Let's Be Natural" was from their ill-fated double album. Can you get The Beatles version on their double album "The Beatles" from these lyrics? "The sun is up, the sky is blue It's beautiful and so are you"

Answer: Dear Prudence

The Rutles were planning a double album but it was delayed because they could not decide on which colour to use for the album cover. They ran out of studio time and reduced the album to one disc, which on release disappeared without trace.

"Dear Prudence" was track two on side one of The Beatles double album "The Beatles" (a.k.a. "The White Album"). It was number one for eight weeks on the UK album chart and number one for nine weeks on the US album chart in 1968/69. Siouxsie and the Banshees had a number three hit on the UK chart with a cover of The Beatles version in 1983. It did not chart in the US.

Answer: All You Need Is Love

Ron Nasty and Dirk McQuickly, The Rutles' main songwriters, fell out and had a fist fight while recording "Love Life". The unfinished single was shelved and released later on the the US album "Tragical History Tour".

The Beatles re-wrote the song and it became "All You Need Is Love". It was number one for three weeks on the UK chart in 1967. It was number one for one week on the US pop chart the same year.
6. When The Beatles covered "Get Up and Go" by The Rutles, they not only gave the song a new title but like The Rutles they had an extra performer on the track. Who was the performer that shared a performance credit on "Get Back" with The Beatles?

Answer: Billy Preston

The release of The Rutles "Get Up And Go" was delayed indefinitely when guest instrumentalist and producer Lips Pecthor pulled a gun on them and left the studio with the master tapes and went home to America.

The Beatles with Billy Preston had a number one for six weeks on the UK chart with their version of "Get Up And Go", "Get Back" in 1969. It was number one for five weeks on the US pop chart the same year. It was the only single by The Beatles to enter the UK chart at number one.

"Magical Mystery Tour". Can you name The Beatles version with these lyrics? "I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly"

Answer: I Am the Walrus

A year before, The Rutles big chance of a breakthrough in America was lost. Ron Nasty, the Rutles' rhythm guitarist, declared that The Rutles were more popular than Bob. Hundreds of Bob Dylan fans burnt the few Rutles records that they could find and radio stations banned their records. This was not hard to do because no US radio station had ever played any of their records before.

The Beatles version of "Piggie in the Middle" was "I Am the Walrus", which was on side two of of disc one of their UK double E.P. "Magical Mystery Tour" and side one of their US album "Magical Mystery Tour".
8. The Beatles took The Rutles track "Ouch!" and re-titled it with the same name as their second movie. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: Help!

The Rutles album "Ouch!" failed because it was only released in mono and the movie "Ouch!" failed because The Rutles insisted it be made in black and white.

Help!" was title of The Beatles second movie and was released in 1965 in colour. The title song "Help!" was number one for three weeks on the UK chart in 1965. It was also number one for three weeks on the US pop chart the same year.
9. This is another Rutles song that ended up on "The Beatles" aka "The White Album". Which song did The Beatles turn The Rutles' "Another Day" into with these lyrics? "When you find yourself in the thick of it Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you Silly Girl"

Answer: Martha My Dear

"Martha My Dear" was a track on side one of The Beatles' "White Album". Not only did The Beatles re-write the lyrics and change the title, but Paul McCartney used the Rutles title "Another Day" for his first solo hit in 1971.
10. Probably the best-known track by The Rutles from their "Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band" album sung by Ron Nasty with Dirk McQuickly is "Cheese And Onions". The Beatles changed it to this song with these lyrics on their "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. Do you know it from these Beatle lyrics? "They had to count them all Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall"

Answer: A Day in the Life

At this point in their careers The Rutles, as can be seen from the music on their "Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band" album, were experimenting with various strong cheese's, sushi and a number of south American coffee blends. Just as their album was beginning to be understood they disappeared across the far east for some transcontinental meditation.

Again The Beatles stepped in and recorded an album that was acceptable to the BBC and had a massive world wide hit. "A Day in the Life" was the last track on The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album.
