Question 1 of 10
1. Walking into a Three Dog Night Concert, I'm hoping to enjoy something happy and upbeat, like "Joy to the World," but since I've arrived a bit late, what I hear are the following words from a song in progress...

"'No' is the saddest experience you'll ever know.
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know..."

I run out, choking back the tears, before I hear the next line of the song, which is...
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Quickly, I run off to a Neil Diamond concert, luckily for me at the arena right next door. The crowd is pumped and everyone is singing along with Neil. I almost feel happy to be there until I hear the words...

"Don't know that I will
But until I can find me
The girl who'll stay
And won't play games behind me
I'll be what I am
A..."

What are the next words, which also happen to be the title of the song, words that I couldn't quite make out as I ran out of the venue sobbing?

Answer: (Two Words)
Question 3 of 10
3. I rush off to the Beatles' reunion concert (bear with me, it's my fantasy)! As I push my way towards the stage to hear Paul's dulcet tones from close up, I'm horrified to catch the following words:

"And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!"

Blubbering away, I stumble towards the exit, realizing that it was my bad luck to hear which of the following bittersweet Beatle ballads?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. I rush into my next concert, hoping for some relief from the sad and melancholy lyrics, but to no avail. Before I manage to get comfortable in my seat, my heart sinks as I hear the following words...

"But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and his mercy

Oh, if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed...."

Singing along, despite myself, I mouth the title to the song, which so aptly describes my own situation. What title did I sing and whose voice was I listening to?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The next concert I stumble into is by artist Oleta Adams. Her sweet voice is soothing at first, but then I focus on the words:

"I was caught in the middle of a rock and a hard place
And I needed a soft place to fall
Then you showed me the reason to rely on my feelings
I had nothing to fear at all.

But I'll never go back to that..."

The next words and the title of this song is "Circle of None". True or false?

Question 6 of 10
6. Already halfway through my concert tickets for the evening, I'm still unable to forget the heartache of my lover's betrayal. I'm happy to see that the next artist is Cat Stevens, as I get settled in my seat. Then the announcer says that the concert would begin with one of Cat's more obscure songs. The words that I hear bring tears to my eyes:

"She hangs her head and cries in my shirt
She must be hurt very badly
"Tell me what's making you sad, Li?
Open your door, don't hide in the dark
You're lost in the dark, you can trust me."
'Cause you know, that's how it must be."

The next lines also contain the title of the song, which is....?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The next ticket I have is for a tavern concert, which I think will be a good change of pace. My heart sinks as I walk in, because I hear the harmonious strains of one of my favorite groups, the Everly Brothers, singing the following words:

"I've never seen a night so long
When time keeps traveling by,
The moon has gone behind the clouds
To hide his face and cry.

Have you ever seen a robin weep
When leaves have turned to brown?
Like me he's lost his will to live..."

The title of the song are also the next words that the singers sang. I'll give you the first three and you provide the rest. "I'm so Lonesome...

Answer: (Three Words (think sad))
Question 8 of 10
8. I race out of the bar and rush to my next concert, by the incomparable Roy Orbison. As I get into my box seats, I'm grateful that there is no one else there to see my crying my eyes out as Roy sings the saddest song he ever wrote, with these words:

"...There goes my baby, there goes my heart.
They're gone forever, so far apart..."

What song is this, the title of which repeats plaintively time and time again throughout the song?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. After washing my face in the rest room, I venture across the street to my next concert. It is by one of my favorite Canadian groups, Great Big Sea, whose songs are usually so cheerful that I can't help but cheer up. I see the audience smiling and laughing, and I think I've finally made it to the right place to get me out of my funk. Then the song begins, and I can't believe it when I hear the following lyrics:

"'It's a cold day for September', was all I thought to say
When I saw you on the street the other day.
I knew something changed between us, all the talk we made was small
But what do you say to someone when they've heard you say it all?
It's an awkward conversation in a most peculiar way..."

Which plaintive break-up song was I being subjected to now?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Holding my final ticket in my hand, I hope to find relief, or at least be able to go home and give up for the night. I walk into another smoke-filled bar with a balladeer singing in the corner, and I surrender my ticket. As I contemplate what to order to drown my sorrows, the songsters raspy voice solves my dilemma and makes the decision for me.

"And then I sit there, drinking, getting high, mellow, knocked out, feeling good
About that time I looked on the wall, at the old clock on the wall
About that time it was ten-thirty then, I looked down the bar at the bartender, he said
'What do you want down there?'..."

What is the title of this song?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Walking into a Three Dog Night Concert, I'm hoping to enjoy something happy and upbeat, like "Joy to the World," but since I've arrived a bit late, what I hear are the following words from a song in progress... "'No' is the saddest experience you'll ever know. Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know..." I run out, choking back the tears, before I hear the next line of the song, which is...

Answer: "'Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do."

This heart-wrenching song is called "One," and though the hit recording was released by Three Dog Night, the song was actually written by Harry Nilsson, of "Without You" fame. In fact, "One" was the FIRST track on Three Dog Night's debut (as in FIRST) album, and it marked one of the biggest successes of the band's career. Thus, it is brought to you by the number One on many different levels!
2. Quickly, I run off to a Neil Diamond concert, luckily for me at the arena right next door. The crowd is pumped and everyone is singing along with Neil. I almost feel happy to be there until I hear the words... "Don't know that I will But until I can find me The girl who'll stay And won't play games behind me I'll be what I am A..." What are the next words, which also happen to be the title of the song, words that I couldn't quite make out as I ran out of the venue sobbing?

Answer: Solitary Man

This song is also brought to you by the Number One, because it too was the FIRST song that Neil Diamond charted to No. 1 with. It's a work he wrote about himself and his lack of luck in love, four years into his career. This just goes to prove that misery loves company!
3. I rush off to the Beatles' reunion concert (bear with me, it's my fantasy)! As I push my way towards the stage to hear Paul's dulcet tones from close up, I'm horrified to catch the following words: "And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years!" Blubbering away, I stumble towards the exit, realizing that it was my bad luck to hear which of the following bittersweet Beatle ballads?

Answer: For No One

Luckily, the tone of voice and instruments on this song are so beautiful, that I could think of that instead of the sadness of the lyrics as I was struggling to get out of there.

Though this is not one of the Beatles' better known songs, it deserves to be, and it is one that diehard Beatles fans adore. It is from the album "Revolver," which was the last of the band's LPs to have different UK and US versions.

Because the title contains the word "One," it too is brought to you by the Number One.
4. I rush into my next concert, hoping for some relief from the sad and melancholy lyrics, but to no avail. Before I manage to get comfortable in my seat, my heart sinks as I hear the following words... "But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces Leaving me to doubt Talk about God and his mercy Oh, if He really does exist Why did He desert me In my hour of need I truly am indeed...." Singing along, despite myself, I mouth the title to the song, which so aptly describes my own situation. What title did I sing and whose voice was I listening to?

Answer: Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally"

O'Sullivan's song came out in 1972, and is one of the few songs in history to hit #1 on the charts in non-consecutive weeks (hence brought to you by the Number One). Many other artists have sung the song after O'Sullivan, which is testimony to its quality. The author claimed that it was not auto-biographical (since he was not close to his father who left the family when Gilbert was only 11), but the words are touching and they have always cut me to the quick.

The other artists mentioned all sang songs by the titles given here, though none of them fit the clue given in the questions.
5. The next concert I stumble into is by artist Oleta Adams. Her sweet voice is soothing at first, but then I focus on the words: "I was caught in the middle of a rock and a hard place And I needed a soft place to fall Then you showed me the reason to rely on my feelings I had nothing to fear at all. But I'll never go back to that..." The next words and the title of this song is "Circle of None". True or false?

Answer: False

The actual title of the song is "Circle of One" (hence brought to you by the Number One). Oleta Adams wrote it during a very lonely period in her life, when she found herself living without friends or family in the city of Los Angeles, having moved there from Washington state.
The words that I hear bring tears to my eyes: "She hangs her head and cries in my shirt She must be hurt very badly "Tell me what's making you sad, Li? Open your door, don't hide in the dark You're lost in the dark, you can trust me." 'Cause you know, that's how it must be." The next lines also contain the title of the song, which is....?

Answer: Sad Lisa

"Sad Lisa" is one of the more plaintive songs on Cat Steven's best-selling album, Tea for the Tillerman" (brought to you by the Number One). By the end of the song, you are not sure who is crazy, the girl that Cat is singing about, or himself, because he ends by saying "Though I know no one can see her...."

Masochistically, I make myself listen to the whole song before leaving. It's one of my favorites of his, and one that he hardly ever performed when he used to give live concerts.

I have always sung the line given above as "Tell me what's making you sad, Li?" instead of "Tell me what's making you sadly" because the latter is ungrammatical and the girl's name is "Lisa". Most websites and even the album cover give the lyrics in the latter form anyway, but bear with me, as this is my fantasy!
7. The next ticket I have is for a tavern concert, which I think will be a good change of pace. My heart sinks as I walk in, because I hear the harmonious strains of one of my favorite groups, the Everly Brothers, singing the following words: "I've never seen a night so long When time keeps traveling by, The moon has gone behind the clouds To hide his face and cry. Have you ever seen a robin weep When leaves have turned to brown? Like me he's lost his will to live..." The title of the song are also the next words that the singers sang. I'll give you the first three and you provide the rest. "I'm so Lonesome...

Answer: I Could Cry

This 1940s Hank Williams song has been recorded by many artists with a variety of styles, from the author's own unique version, to the crooning approach of Rosemary Clooney and Dean Martin, to the pure country style of Winona Judd and Johnny Cash, to the heartfelt ballads of Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Al Green. Perhaps the strangest use of the song was in the soundtrack of the 2009 movie, "Zombieland."

This song ranked #111 out of 500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's Greatest Songs of All Time, so it is also brought to you by the Number One.
8. I race out of the bar and rush to my next concert, by the incomparable Roy Orbison. As I get into my box seats, I'm grateful that there is no one else there to see my crying my eyes out as Roy sings the saddest song he ever wrote, with these words: "...There goes my baby, there goes my heart. They're gone forever, so far apart..." What song is this, the title of which repeats plaintively time and time again throughout the song?

Answer: Only the Lonely

Orbison originally wanted the Everly Brothers or Elvis Presley to record this song, but friends convinced him to sing it himself, and they were so right. His voice epitomizes what it means to feel all alone in the world.

When Orbison released this song on his greatest hits album, it charted to #2 in the US and #1 in the UK, which helped this song too to be brought to you by the Number One.
Then the song begins, and I can't believe it when I hear the following lyrics: "'It's a cold day for September', was all I thought to say When I saw you on the street the other day. I knew something changed between us, all the talk we made was small But what do you say to someone when they've heard you say it all? It's an awkward conversation in a most peculiar way..." Which plaintive break-up song was I being subjected to now?

Answer: How Did We Get From Saying "I Love You"...

The rest of this long title (which is usually represented as above with an ellipsis) is "...to 'See You Around Someday'." All of the other songs listed are Great Big Sea tunes as well, and all are from their album "Play," which came out in 1997. The Canadian rock-folk band with strong Scotch-Irish roots has a loyal fan base, though none of their songs has charted to number one.

Their FIRST appearance was as the FIRST band playing in Canada at a festival for Irish Descendants, so in a roundabout way, this song is also brought to you by the Number One.
"And then I sit there, drinking, getting high, mellow, knocked out, feeling good About that time I looked on the wall, at the old clock on the wall About that time it was ten-thirty then, I looked down the bar at the bartender, he said 'What do you want down there?'..." What is the title of this song?

Answer: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

The song as originally written by Amos Milburn was titled "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer," but the more widely known John Lee Hooker version presents the libations in the order shown here. It is the perfect song for drinking yourself silly to try to forget a heartache, though as the next day's hangover will always show, that strategy is not always the best one!

The word "One" figures prominently in the title of the song three times, making it undoubtedly a song brought to you by the Number One.
